The Franklin Land and Cattle com

In the spring of the company
mirch.nid tho celebrated Ikard an i
Harold brothers herd of cattle, the
largest single herd in America, and
about which so much appeared in the
newspapers several years ago. It was
claimed by the Ikarda and the Harolds,
and generally conceded, that there
were 75,000 head in the herd, and the
figure first named in the negotiations
was $l,50i),OOH.
The pu.'cha-io was finally made,
upon the basis of $22 per hea I.
Colonel Crcom, of Kentucky, one of
the purchasers, estimates- that the herd
will number 55, 0 and, therefore,
yith the realization of hia expecta

cool 1100.000 by the purchase upon the
p?r head basis, and the grand total of
the investment wi.l bei,'J0J,0U0.

a point to treat them liberally in the
matterof supplies of meat, visited them
frejutntly, staid over night at their

eager to protect my property and do

What uf the festive cowboy?"
"That is a much-abused individual,
Bir. As a rule he is the bravest,
honestest, truest liberty-loving son
that American soil can boast of. There
are of course exceptions to this rule,
and I know cowboys that are the
meanest men that ever went unhung.
I?ut the great majority of them are
tilled with the noblest trait3 of man
hood, and are as true as steel to a
friend or a promise. Their dexteiity
in throwing a lasso is marvlous, too.
Every year we have a "roping,"and offer
prizes to the most expert. A cowboy
mounted on a trained horse, lasso in
hand, is stationed on the open plain one
hundre 1 yards widn from a little pen
containing a wild three-year-o d tteer.
Ataghen signal the pen is thrown

the rider puts spurs to his horse,
patches the game, throws the lasso over
his horns, reverses his horse with ter

his si 'e, the horse holds the rope taught,
and in a jiffy the cowboy ha di

"Oh, we rough it of course: but to a

it is the finest life in the world. I
consider that we live on the very lat

of the porch. .Men fo'low, and repeat
the operation. Then tho girls dip th ir

embroidered towels hanging in the
sun, and finally the men and bovs like

porridge, milk, unleavened bread,
and perhaps some dry or pickled
fish. Weak fermented drink is
handed round in a clumjy wooden
firkin, with side an 1 cover pa nted
or carved two generations ago.
At the i lose of the meal tlu y sit aroun 1
the room and s ng a hymn together be
fore they return to the fields. Every
thing in the house is of the most prim

on the ground tloor are chairs made of

against the side of the room, and ti ere '

overhead hang tools, baskets, and poles
draped with great bunches of folded
rye bread, about the appearance and
texture of coar e brown paper.
To lighten up the dull-toned interior
the farmers w.fo has hung
her embroidered towels and bril

of the straw-filled bunks, and spr ad a
richly-colored pie;e of soft home

carefully stored. On the floor s! e has
sprinkled fresh b;rt-h leaves or stretched
a piece or uorno made rag carpet.

light. The rakes whi ch hang by the
door are whittled out -of tough wood.
The beer-m'ujr. the old hand-mangles,
and the saddle bows are carved in gro
tesque forms or covered with intricate
ornamentation. Ajnong t he few pieces
of coarse crockery is found, perhaps,
a quaint silver cup. and sticking ia the
same rack with the clumsy wooden
ladles is a battered but serviceable sil

A remarkniile cure: A lady, sevr'fity-sit
yenrn of ago, walks this summer for the first
tme in years. A ease that was piven np by
the physicians. Her friends and rolatiye
had given op in despair of her ever getting
out again. Mrs. Julia 11. Hbundaqb, of sli
Maple street, llridgopoi t, Conn., recently said
to a representative of this paper, whon ques
tioned about tho enso of her mother: " I can
very cheerfully give my testimony in favor
of so Valuable ftn article as Hunt's Itemed?.
My mother, who is seventy-six jpars of age,
has for over thirty years boon ulllieted with
kidney, liver and heart diseases, which has
confined hor to the houso most of tho time;
and to add lo her other troubles, about three
years ngo ihoi sy in its worst form set in.
We had three doetois, who did all they could
for her with btlt little fuccess, ns she grew
rapidly wori-e, and death scorned inevitable.
At limes hor I ody nnd limbs would be-swollen
pearly twice their usual size. Her pnysicuins
Rave her up, saying they could do nothing
more for her. She was also given tip by her
friends. Having h 'nrd of tho great amount
of good Hunt's Hemo.ly had accomplished,
anil of tho remarkniile enn s it had made iu
iindiir cases, wo thought, as a last hope we
would try it, and to tho great astonishment
of us all (doctors included) she begun to im
prove, and in a very short time the shviiij;
left her entire IkhIii: the ninny aches nnd pains
from which she suffered she knows no more.
Slio has walked out this summer for tho first I

What a puzzle the little child is in the domestic economy !
I low the mother gives of her own life and strength to support the life
of her blessed little youngster !
How the child kicks, and laughs, and crows!
1 low the child grows, and is heavier and heavier every day.
And yet she lifts him, and tosses him, and plays with him, and takes
care of him by day and by night.
Is it any wonder the mother breaks down? Her back aches. Her
stomach fails her. 1 ler liver is bad. I Ier blood is thin, and she says she
fi-els poorly. Yes, yes, poorly very poorly. Give mother a bottle of
1't on iCs hon Bitters, She needs the iron in her blood, which that will
put there. She must have strength, or she will be a confirmed old invalid.
BroinCs Iron Jitters helps worn and weary women jnto new life.
