Whittekin, of Tionesta, as a candidate for ooimty surveyor, subject to Repub lionn nvages. INDUSTRIOUS REFORMERS. The present Legislature of Penn sylvania dsservei great credit for ia tlustry and good intentions. Ofcours we speak of the Legislature generally, and not r.f the obilruetionists, wh, seem disposed to put ia there alloterl time, draw their money and go home without affecting any good purpose. For the mora important purposes of reform the democrats and indepen dents co-operato in supporting the ad tninistratieu of Gov. l'attison, who has proved worthy the confidence re posed in him by the poople. If any thing that ought to be done retnaius undone, or if anything that ought not to l doue is accomplished, the blame thereof will be attributable to . the unfair tricks of the Stalwarts who are under Ire influence of Torn Coo per anu the intrigues of those who were so' much disappointed and cha grined at the defeat of Geueral Bea ver last November. The above editorial from the Craw ford Democrat reads like a tale from the Arabian Nights or a fragment of testimony in the Star Route trial to anyone familiar with the course of events since the Legislature met at Ilarrisburg three months ago. If in dustry consists ia doing three days work for eevtn days' pay, thm is the Legislature of Pennsylvania most in , dustrious, and deserves credit, but if it consists in doing the work for which it draws pay in a thorough and expeditious manner, the present Leg islature has none cf it. What has this industrious Legislature to 6how for. its Jhree months labor? Absolute ly Dotting. The people of Pennsyl vania ar. not to to be deceived by wind and thunder. They want work and will only give ored it for it when it is done. The editor of the Demo crat may give the reformers at ilarris burg credit for as much of that ma terial with which the road to that place where bad democrats deserve to be relegated is said to be paved, as he sees fit, but for the sake of decency be ought to omit the "industry." Will the edi .or of the Democrat please mention the important legislation that has originated in the democratic brauch of the legislature? The per fect accord between the Governor and majority in the House has been illus trated -on more than one occasion. The Governor has shown his appre ciation of the statesmanship of the reformers at Ilarrisburg by vetoing about one-half the bills passed by "tbem. The republican minority in the Ilouse are not following the tac tics of the democrats in Congress, nor can the Democrat point out a single instance 6ince the Legislature met where tbey have acted in the charac ter of obstructionists. The democratic reformers went to Ilarrisburg firm in the belief that republicans would oppose every reform measure proposed by thfcni ; that they could kill any leg islation objectionable to them and lay the blamo ou the republicans. The democrats soon found to their dingust that the republicans were ready and willing to support auy and every true reform measure proposed. In this dilemma the democratic majority in the House conceived the brilliant idea of doing uothiDg and blaming it on republican obstruction; but it will ret avail them. Every important bill in the interest of reform has origi nated ia the republican Senate where democratic opposition is powerless; every reform measure that bus been kilUd has been smothered in the demo cratic house. The Democrat may entertain the fond hope that "if any thing that ought to be done remains undone, or if anything that ought not to be done is accomplished," the blame will be attributed to the repnblicans, but the people of Pennsylvania are not so easily cheated. MeadvUle Re publican. It must be obvious to everybody who will give the matter thought. ( that the nineteenth ot April will pre f teut us with a centennial opportunity I that iot to be improved to the ut oost. A little reflection will ehow tut it is quite as important in its way the Fourth of July, and a good uy persons will reasonably believe it is evtn more important. It was on that date that tlio Continental army was informed by General Wash ington that a treaty of peace bad been made between the American colonies and Great Britain, and that the inde pendence of the former had been there by admitted. o Ex Speaker Randall is actively at work on his campaign for the Speak ership. While the Car!ile men are very boisterous about the prospects of their candidate.-), Randall keeps his own councils and is reported asgainiag strength daily. The difference be tween the two factions is that the Wes tern men indulge in the Chiuese method of gongs ami fire crackers and other demonstrations to over-awe and iutimi date the enemy, while the Eastern men operate under cover, and do not strike until ready, and then take the enemy unawares. The ex-Speaker is an adept in this style of tactics. He has been in Neto York for some day?, and has been in conference with his friends. It is intimated that the outlook is not as discouraging as at first reported. The great issue will be the tariff, and whichever wing of the party on this question is the stronger that wing will, in all probability, gain the day. The election of Carlisle will mean a com mittee ou Ways aud Means pledged to a Democratic effect to pass a free trade tariff bill. The election of Mr. Ran dall means a Democratic do-nothing committee. In either case the results will be the same, as both are a stand ing menace of the industrial interests of the whole country. The experieuco and ability of Mr. Randall would be invaluable in managing the large Democratic majority in the Ilouse, but they have just enough sense not to see it, Ilarrisburg Telegraph. The one hundred legislative days have pasesd, and only twelve bills have been passed by this Legislature, five of which were vetoed. This is work from a reform point of view. The Ladies' Floral Cabinet (New York) for April has, for its opening articles a poem entitled "In April," which is one of Eben Bex ford's best efforts, its very rythm be ing suggestive "of song and sunshine, and all sweet things that summer bringi," and very fittingly introduce the good things that are offered in the pages that follow. C. E. Parnell con tributes a very useful article upon "Lawns," that much-neglected portion of our home surroundings, giving di rections to start a good lawn, and how to care for one when procured. As before stated, any of our readers may have a copy of the Cabinet for exami nation at half price (six cents), by mentioning this paper. Address, Ladies' Floral Cabinet. 22 Vesey Street, New York.
