We learn that Samuel Calvin, of Cooksburg, is quits ill at present. The borough schools will close for the season on next Saturday, and the little ones are accordingly happy. By reference to the proper place it will be seen that Mr. II. C. Whitt ekio is a candidate for County Survey or. Miss Annie Jackson, who hasjust completed a successful term as teacher of the Irvineton school, has returned home. It is said by some people who profess to know all about it, that this is tho year for the seveuteeu-j'ear lo cust to put in an appearance. The warm leather is now rapidly driving out the frosts of last wiuter and farmers are beginning to plow, but the time to plant is not yet at hand. Spring's come sure, now. The first chirp of the peep-frog was beard from Sickles swamp Monday evening, and that's a sure sifii. Of course, we may have several slifht touches of Wiuter yet, but his spiual column is bunted. The tug "John P. Thorn" came up the river yesterday afternoon, and towed two of the large barges that wero built at Hickory last fall, down to Pittsburg. It tore dowu the tele graph wire that spanned the river at this place. --D. C. Oyster and Alfred Short sold forty acres of oil territory in the Clarondon field, the other day, for $150 per day. A good saL, we should say. Elk Democrat. There isn't any doubt of it; $150 per day is a big fig ore for oil territory. Mr. T. J. Payne, of Tylersburgh, made a pleasant call at the Republi can office Monday. He contemplates makiug a tour to California with his wife the coming summer, for the bene fit of her health, which has been rather delicate for some time. T. B. Mache8sney, of Neilltowu, who spent last fall and wiater in Florida on business for A. A. Hopkins, goes again to the land of swamps, ac companying Mr. Hopkius, who goes for the purpose of attending to his business enterest in that section. The Warren AFarnsworth valley railway will, during the coming season, extend their road down Minister Creek to Balltowu, and from the mouth of minister up to the Sheriff-, where they will be met by a branch of the Pitts burgh, Bradford & Buffalo Railroad. Prof. Xahle, of Shamburg High School, paid our town a visit this week. He came over for the purpose of filling in a day of his vocation from school duties with "a fish." The Prof, visited our schools, and talks of being an ap plicant for the upper room next term. Boys, did you size him up? Charlss M. Cox Esq., of Boston, was a gufctt of Tionesta the past week, and during his 3tay paid the Republi can a pleasant visit. He is largely interested in theSpooner tract, Kings ley twp., in connection with which he was called to our county. From him we firfat learned of the death of-our valued friend ard subscriber Mr. D.C. Spooner, of Philadelphia, which occur red very suddenly some time in Janua ry last. J. T. BHENNAN. This is first rate maple sugar weather; in fact, it is about the first weather we've bad that has been fit for the business notwithstanding there 'has beei alleged "new maple sugar" ia market for a month back. Liko Josh Billings' boardieg-houae hash, when warmed over, it counts the same as new. Invitations are out for the mar riage of two of our young popular people, Mr. F. R. Laoson, of the flour ishing firm of II. J. Hopkins & Co., and Miss Alice J. Proper, daughter of Judge Tropor. The happy event will take place to-morrow evening at the resid"nco of the bride's parents. We extend congratulations. Patrick Graham, of Clarion whom we mentioned last week as having re ceived a severe stroke of paralysis, died on Wednesday, 4th inst., from the effects of the stroke. Mr. Graham bad 'a very large circle of friends in this section, and no man was more universally esteemed than he. Clar ion couuty loses much by his death. First trout story of the season Dr. Coburn passed through town one day last week with the finest lot of trout, numerically epeaking, ever brought to this place. There were upward of 3000 of them, and were taken from the State hatchery at Corry and put into the Doctor's Dutch Hill pond The Dr. also received a dozen German carp which ho lias placed iu the pond The washing out of the bank has necessitated the cutting down of some of the large trees along the river in front of Charlie Hinton's property be low Tubbs Run, in order to save the read from caving in. It spoils the looks of things to some extent, but as they were liable to topple over at any moment and take with them two-thirds of the road bed it was deemed best to cut them down. Mr. Thos. King, the well known contractor, who succeeding iu holding the famous "646" well a profound mystery for fifty-two days, stopped in town several days last week, tie is now looking after the well on the Walters farm near New manville, which is about ready to "fetch in." Getting blood out of a turnip and a "pointer" out ot Tom. are two tricks that .haven't yet been accomplished. Mr. R. D. Hoskins for same month past local editor of the Chronicle, has purchased the Bathgate Sentinal, and goes up to take chargo of it this week. During Mr. Hoskins stay with us he has made many friends here. who will be sorry to see him depart He is a first-class uewspaper man, and will give the citizens of Bathgate aud vicinity one of the best papers in the valley. Crookston (Minn.) Chronicle' Here is Wiggins weather for the balance of the year. He predicts a mild April with a third-class storm on the 10th, a mild May with a fourth class storm on the 8tb, a cool Juue, a very hot July, a mild August, a win dy September, a calm October with a snow from the 1st to the 4th, an ordi nary November and a boisterous De cember. Our readers can believe as much as they please of this, but paste the above is your hat. The survey of the B. N. Y. & P. R. Stevenson of the above road, are now examining a route from Lucinda Furnace up Lick- ug Creek to Ty lersburg, thence down Big Coon and the Tionesta to Tionesta, where they will connect with the main iue of the River Division of the B. Sweet Potatoes and Chautauqua I at Wm SmearWaugh & Co 2t I Last Thursday Mr.-8. C. Sloan met with a serious accident at Fox burg, Pa. He was at work on the new depot now building at that place when by some cause he fell from the building sustaining what may yet ter mmate in fatal injuries. His wife and daughter, Emma, were on their way to this place, but stopped and returned with him to Allegheny City, where he will received medical treatment. We are without full particulars, and at this writing cannot give his condition but live in hopes that he may not be as seriously injured as at first reported P. S. Since the above was io type Mr. Sloan has arrived fn town, and -i f.- .i . ... . we are giaa to state mat bis injuries are not so serious as at first reported. The farm house near the school house on Hunter Run, about two miles from this place, and lately occupied by Primer Aguew, was burned tj the ground on Thursday night last. The place was bought by an oil company during the excitement io '65, from Gilbert McKimley, since which time it has been occupied and farmed by many different tenants, and,' as in the case of many other farms iu this section owned by oil compauies, there was al ways more or less contention as to who would be the next occupant when one moved out. Mr. Aeuew bad moved out the day before the fire, leaving some of his stuff perhaps $25 worth remaining in the house, all of which was consumed. As there had been no fire about the premises uuring the day of course it was the work of an iucen diary. Such dastardly conduct should meet with the condemnation of all re spectable people, and the perpetrator should be brought to speedy justice. A Nice Flood and Lots of Lumber. ine much hoped-for flood is here at last and a most gorgeous one it is, too The warm weather of tho latter part of last week together with the little rain which fell caused a melting of the large amount of snow yet left in the big woods aud soon swelled river and creek into high rafting stage. Rafts began running out of .the creek on Friday afternoon and by Monday the eddy at the mouth was filled for a full bait mile, all getting out in splendid shape. But one or two "Alleghenies" have thus far started down, tho river being yet too high to run. Balltowo seems to be attracting the bulk of attention now a days among oil men. The Welsh well was opened Monday, and although not as large as expected is still a fair sized producer, it haviag opened up at the rate of 1000 berrels a day. This wel is principally owned by JameB Welsh whom we are pleased to state, wil reap a nice fortune from his interests- The Graodin & Kelly No. 6 was ex pecting to reach the sand yesterday and will be shortly followed by the Murphy, on 3,133. Graodin No. 6 is eighty rods east and a little north of the Grandin No. 3, aud is sulh-west of the Welsh about forty rods. Both of these wells are expected to be gush ers of the regulation size, especially the Grandin & Kelly. P. S. Gran din No. 6 is in, and reported to be good for 1500 barrels a day. COOPER TRACT Yesterday's Derrick furnished the fol lowing news from the Cooper district "Anchor Oil Company's No. 9 struck the third sand yesterday. It made tour flows between 2 o'clock in the morning and 7 a. m. The location of this well is directly south of Clark & Foster's third sand producer on tract 2,736. They are still fishing at the same company's No, 13. Their No. is doing 100 barrels. It has not yet been tubed, and they' are engaged in cleaning out. Shannon No. 9, on division 8 of the Cooper tract, struck a large gas vein in the second sand last week. This well is located be tween the Anchor's No. 14 and the Shannon No. 3 dry hole on the same division, neither of which got the gas. It is only another proof of the very spotted couditioo of this territory The formatiou in the Cooper tract dis trict is so broken that the record if one well is no guide to the driller on the next well, no matter bow near the two may be. L. A. Breonemau & Co.'s No. 2 was flowing at the rate of 150 barrels yesterday. L. A. Breune man & Co.'s No. 3 will strike the sand to morrow. It is located between Nos. 1 and 2. Their No. 5 is expected io Friday. No. 5 is spudding ; a rig is up for No. 6, and a rig building for No. 7. The last three wells are located west of their No. 1." The Tionesta Oil Co's No. 2 Bea ver Valley, commenced operations last Wednesday. This venture is located on tract 5218 near Mr. Braces mill Ut course toe company expects to Btrike it this time, and it is hoped it may, ine wen on ine waiters tarm is down between 1400 and 1500 feet, with still a strong veiu oi' gas. It will doubtless be ready to bring in by the latter part of this or the first of next week. The Wolcott well near Nebraska, is being drilled into the sand this week. This well has lain idle so long that it had almost dropped out of notice. What its prospects are for a producer cajnot be told at this writing, but the general impression is that it will not bust the market much. Tbe rig-stuff for the Tubbs Run well is all oa the ground, and the machine ry win oe mere also when the nsr is ready. A 250 barrel tank has been set, evidiuciog that the owners expect to make a strike. This well will be put down with all possible haste, and as eoon as this one is fairly under way another rig will be put up on the same tract. The parties mean to give it a fair test. Will F.
