A bill has been introduced into the Rtato Legislature, fixiDg the standard weight of a bushel of potatoes at sixty pound. ' . Sj. Since the death of Thurlow Weed, Guv. Morgan and Got. Jewell, Mr. Til"en is one of the few old politicians , 1-ft, and he is so badly "left" in the Presidential contest that he has per haps been forgotten by old Time. . Tkk consolidation ot the great tele graph companies revives the question as to whether it would not be a move ment io tha interest of the public if the Government were to erect and maintain postal telegraph lines. The Government control in England has proved a success.. g r The puprcra9 court of Illinois de cides that no man is obliged to clean the side-walk opposite his house. Anthony fell heir to a fortune and has put the broad ocean between herself and her native coun try. What a pity it is that some more (f the short haired, strong-minded wo nen have not acquired a fortune and, ike Susan, gone to Europe. '; A chnge in the game law is deemed ery necessary in regard to killing eer. The season now extends from ctober 1 to December 31, and should e from Sept. 1 to Deo. 1. Such a Jango would prevent in some measure le extermination of deer in North eatern Pennsylvania. Last season ..ore deer were killed in the month i December than in the two proced tg mouths. The cld weather does not irly set in until the first of December hen hunting parties camp out and II ihe deer by the dozen. In mild eather hunters cannot do such whole le slaughter. (The above extract from the Warren Wsete forth the ideas of nine-tenths J" the hunters end citizens of this I'Unty. If another slaughter of deer 1 this county like that of the past ason should he perpetrated, there .11 be no need of a law to protect is noble game five year? hence, as it 11 surely have become extinct. Will r legislators take heed in time? The present terrific floods in the rth American rivers should serve point a very emphatic moral. The ivastation of forests has much to do th these mighty torrents which sweep 'evy.ibly everything before them ' it can be floated. Pennsylvania is t losing her once famous forests m two principal causes the gree- lumberman and tanner and the jniner forest fire. It is time our leg htors adopt the most stringent legal 'azures to preserve as fir as possible f forests still remaining. New York waking up at last to this important Inject and is now proposing to make public park of the Adirondao re cu and put a stop to the lumber ipping process which has so long ".vailed in that region. While such lao is not feasible in this State, j'.oh ray yet be done to prevent the t'.iro deuuudation of our forest coun (' in the central and northwestern t'tofthe State, which furnish the nrce9 of tho Susquehanna and Alia )ny rivers. Whatever can be done rrthis direction thould have prompt Ibntion. l'hila. A literary society' in the north eastern corner of Erie county, Pa., has resolved to go out of business en tirely. In the early' part of the winter a round faced, jolly looking old farmer, who lives just across the State lino in Chautauqua county, New York, gave the society three let ters to read, with the promise that if any member cotild decipher any one of the letters a library of 100 volumes would be given to the society free of cost. The society worked at the let ters two nights a week until the first of this month, when the task was given up as impossible and the society was disbanded. The letters were written by Horace Greelov to his brother, the jolly-looking old farmer. Mr. Gree ley should not seek to discourage lit erary societies in that way. Silas M.
