The Derrick's Sheffield corres pondent gives our friend Whittekin the following deserved p'iff in Mon day's paper : "An excursion train was run on the Tionesta Valley narroAV guago yesterday morning, taking tbo officers of the company over tho road as far a3 Brooketou, that being a3 far as the regular trains are running. The gentleman constituting tho company were, we understand, well pleased with their road, taking all things into con sideration. Prof. F. F. Whittekin, C. E., For est county's bos3 surveyor, has lately been appointed chief engineer of the above road and made his first trip over it on Wednesdey. Mr. W. was formerly connected with the engineer ing department of the Buffalo, Pitts burgh & Western railroad ; with the Tiouesta railroad company for whom be located a lino from bheiaeid down Tionesta creek and the Allegheny river to South Oil City, aud wa3 again employed to make some surveys for tbe lionesta K Allegheny Kiver rail road. During the latter part of 1S81 Mr. Whittekiu was in tho employ of tbe Denver & iiio Grande narrow cua;;0. in the capacity of locating en gineer, and although but a young man penormed some teats ot engineering that older heads might well feel proud of. The Tionesta Valley ompany are fortunate in securing his services." COUNTY COMMITTEE MEETING. The Republican Committee of For est county, met, according to the call of the Chairman, at Hon. E. L. Tho' following bits of oil and rail road news we cull from the Derrick, because it' of interest to our readers : Tin: "G4G" mystery. Ono of tho indirect owners of tho well told your reporter yesterday that it was 1G10 feet deep, loss than two feet in tho sand and showing for a large well. That tho oil is a shade darker than the color of the Chrcn don oil, and tho sand ia a nice white pebblo. This report is no more to bo relied upon than many others which contradict it. , GARFIELD. Thie is tho name given to tho new oil town for which the 6ecd has been planted on G4G. A largo board sign faring the name of Garfield has been erected nruI tho ground has been broken , 101' several buildings, and these are tho'ly sins in tho woods at present of what ".v in timo prove a flourishing little oil town. BLUE JAY. Messrs. Morck & fchulhi proposes to make a thorough test of their property iu tho Blue Jay district this spring They will drill four wells at once. Ihe rig is up for one oa the west ind ov thejCooper tract, and the boiler was moved to it to day. TIi9 other wells aro located on a lino between lot 40S and tho old Blue Jay well;?. Ono rig i3 on tho Forest oH company's tract, another on tho Cook Iroct and the third on the Stewart tract. These are all important wells and will test a largo extent of territory. WAItrtEX.". A corps of surveyors aro running a line for the Warren & Jefferson rail road up Farnaworth run to Balltown, and from there following Tiouesta creek to Bluo Jay, and thence into Clarion and Jefferson counties. A survey was made for this routo last summer by way of Sheffield, but it is believed that tho new route by Ball town will be selected. The chief en gineer has rented rooms for himself and family in Warren for the summer, and intends pushing work on the new lino vigorously, This is a Vanderbilt road, and the object is to make a southern extension to tbe Jefferson county coal fields for the Dunkirk & Warren railroad. Forest County and its Records. Forest County was formed of parts of Jefferson aud Venango counties. Until 1867, when the addition from Venango county was made, little, if any, notice was taken of tbo infant county ; Eince then she has built and completely paid for a court house, which, considering tho size and popu lation of tho county, compares favora bly with any in Pennsylvania; her jail is a substantial structure, and it may be stated, much to tho credit of the county, hardly ever has an occu pant. The lumber interest of tho county is carried on by men who un derstand their business, iind in a manner that makes tho industry a matter of material benefit to tho citi. zens. In this direction there are immense tracts of timber withiu Foreit county's borders which will for years yet occupy the attention of our already prosperous lumbermen. Now, a new industry aud source of wealth seem3 breaking in upon us: Tha de velopments in tho upper towusqips of our county indicate that ero ono year passes Forest couuty will bo the oil field of Pennsylvania. Land owners of tho county are all interested in these matters ; ono drawback to the interest cf persons owning land in this county is tho fact that the records of titles previous to its organization remain in Jefferson and Vonango counties, which is a sourc-o of great incjuvenieneo, for the reason that no statements of any titlo can bo made without a trip to Franklin or Brook ville. Soma owuori have had their deed? recorded here lately, even when thoy had been recorded previously in Veaango and Jeffjrsou counties; some getting certified copies from these countit-3 and havo them recorded in our ccu;ity Recorder's ollice. Now, this is not as it should bo ; a petition is being circulated through the county asking the court to order the transfer of the records pertaining to this county from Ve nango and JtfiVrson counties hero iu books furnished by and at tho proper expense to tho county. This is a move in the right dirsction, and when dono our county will stand independent from these counties in matter .of recurh-i, and of prosperity, too, as fr aj that i3 coucerucd. Lot tho eitizoai of the county give this matter their attention ; let our littla county of Forest stand in tho Coninionwenli.Ii with its own lumber interests, oil in terests, and above all, full and sub stantial records of nil tbo lauds within its borders.
