Under the above caption a well-posted TioneHta tentlcman writes to the Frank lin Press the following very sensible and accurate account of tho aew road we have had occasion to speak of frequently of late. Wiat the correspondent says is true in every instance. Ed. Republican. Tion:;sta, Pa., March 14, 1882. En. Prms: In your last isMue some gen eral reference was made to the Tionesta fc Allegheny River Railroad. The Phila delphia Ledger ot a recent date gives an encouraging and satisfactory account of this road, the building of which is in con templation for this season. The route is from Sliellield, on tho Philadelphia it Erie road ; thence along the Tionesta Creek to its mouth at Tionesta, thence down the Allegheny on the east bank to Oil City, a total distance of 58 miles. The gradea on this road are remarkably easy not exceed ing ten feet to the mile, it is said. If built it will be mors important than might ap pear at first sight, shortening the distance between fhe lower oil region and Phila delphia, as well as opening up a compara tively new county blong the valley of the Tionesta. giving new life to vast lumber interests in Forest and Wnrrea counties, and to tho coal Interests of Venanjso and adjoining counties. Tho dense forests of hemlock and pine that lie along its route e.re o mutter f great commercial imiHrtunce. The hem lock itself is a vast item. After passing Tionesta a few miles the hemlock timber is reached, which spreads west to the branches 31 the Susquehanna and north into Warren and the edge of McKean, and is the largost and most continuous body of hemlock on the globe. There is noth ing like it in llritish America, or Russia, or anywhere between hare and the North Polo. This road has been surveyed by an able corps of engineers under tho direction of T. II. Wilson, late Superintendent of the P. T. & D. Railway, who took great inter est in this project, and carried cn tho sur veys a.id explorations at a large cost of timo and money. He had the wisdom to see the vat coal interests that would be subserved, the timber, tho hemlock bark, the tanneries, the South American hides that would be carried to aud from them, and the oil in southern Warren and north ern Forest cil fields. Seeing through his (spectacles these and many other advanta ges it is not surprising that this read is a favorite enterprise with him and that he has enlistod other in it. Mr. F. F. Whit tckin, formerly of President, Vonango county, but now of Forest, made the pre liminary surveys and reports, and spent months with a corps investigating tho route, being as much of an enthusiast in the work as Wilson himself. You may set the road down aiuou tho certalntiosof the near future. OUR BOROUGH SCHOOLS. Report of tho Tionesta Ilorough Schools for the month ending March l'jth : Room No. 1.
