Monday was a "bluster" if there ever was one in March. Just enough sunshine to entic one out of doora only to be enveloped in a blustering bliuding snow etoroi. ' Elbert, son of Mr. J. R. Chad wick has been in a very critical condi tion during the past week, being afflicted with lung fever. We believe he is somewhat better now. A writer advises that girls who wish to have small mouths should repeat at frequent intervals during the day, "Fanny Finch fried five floun dering frogs for Frances Fowler's father." Mrs. Katheriue Sanner, mother of our esteemed townsman, Mr. John Sanner, died iu Oil City, on Wedues day last and was buried at her former homo in Msca, Ohio. She was aged seventy-six years. J. J. McLauren has purchased the defunct Petroleum World and will start a paper in Franklin shortly Franklin is in need of a lot more papers, but Mr. M. is a good newspa per man and may make a success of his new venture. Robinson & Bonner have now in stock the finest lot of men's, ladies and children's fine boots and shoes, that has come to this market for many La day. Marked down. to the very lowest notch. Call and see. 2t. Charley Clark, son ofour popular Sheriff, was married ou the 24th Jan uary to Miss Aggie Fifer, at her resi dence in Edge Hill, Montgomery Co., Pa., where he has been employed for upward of a year past. The girl that captured Charley is to be congratula ted on her taste in selecting bo indus trious and worthy a young man for her husbaud. Hia niany young frieods iu Forest county will join us in wishing him and his bride a happy and prosperous future. Clara Louine KelWz was tilled to sfog at Oil City Monday night.,' but got sick and couldn't come. We learn that, some of our citizens were taken in and don't feel any too good about it either, David Navarro, the fat boy who has been on exhibition in the different museums throughout the country, died in the pest hou.se, at Pittsburgh, on Tuesday of last week, of small pox. He was twenty-one years of age and weighed 700 pounds. The Oriental Casket for March has reached our table, and is far ahead of former numbers. It is fast taking rank among the leading periodicals of the day, and bids fair to enjoy a large patronage. L. Lum Smith, Publisher, 911 Arch St., Philadelphia. Mr. Wm. Merkle, the energetic and wido-awako Superinteudant of the Economy Oil Co., of Tidioute, was in town on Friday last looking after the interests of his company in Forest county, and tok occasion to make us a pleasant and substantial call. A couple of Tionesla'a young gents have been letting their mus taches "rush" for the' past two weeks. The boys havo found it out, and now the y, gs. are in a stew lest some un principled fellow may tell their old folks about it. P. B. They are the base ball kind nine ou a. side. "Parson" Pluraroer, late of the defunct Greenback Vindicator, of Meadville, has emigrated to Fargo, Dakota, where he. is now running a Republican paper. Although a portly man the Parson can turn more polit ical flip-fllops in a shorter space of time than the most famous acrobat the world has ever witnessed. The Bradford Sunday News, one of the very best papers that comes to this office, is producing some excellent portraits of prominent citizens of that lively city. None of your plastered up, smeary cuts, as are often displayed iu the newspapers of the day,but real neat, clean eugravings, which add much to the interest of the paper. Ben Caldwell, who is snugly fixed in a good situation in Dallas, Texas, has our thanks for copies of leading papers from that State. By a private letter we learn that Ben is very much taken with that part of Texas which he has seen. lie at ties that every thing is green, the fruit trees in full bloom, and farmers are putting in their spring crops. The Tidioute News has shed its old coat and came out last week in a new dress, which is very becoming. When we say the paper is much im proved in appearance, it means a good dual, for the News always was a good looking, clean sheet. Bro. While has our best wishes for the continuance of prosperity which has evidently struck him. County Surveyor Whittekia de parted yesterday for Ilarrisburg, where he is to give testimony before the Board of Property in the case of Salmon. Creek Lumber & Mining Co. vs. W. A. Duseubury, on application for vacant land ia Howe and Kingsley townships. Remember us, Whit., if you see or bear of anything that will be of interest to our readers. Mr. J. P. Grove came home from Clarendon, Warren county, a few days last week. He has been drilling on the May, Grove & Co., well we spoke of a short time ago. This well came in last week and started off at 40 bar rels, which is good for ttat territory. Park returned on Monday to begin drilling another well on the same lease, which no doubt will be a good one. Baldwin's Railway Guide for March is out, aud as usual contains the most accurate and reliable R. R. statistics, time-tables etc., to be found Lin any publication of its kind. The spicy and irteresting editorials and general reiding matter contained ia its pages are not tho least noteworthy features of the Guide. Henry Nauert & Co., Publishers, 200 Main Street, Buffalo, N. Y. We so by the Derrick that Mr. G. W. Milford, the Dry Goods Mer chant of Oil City, has taken into part nership two of his former employes, Messrs. N. R. Groves and W. L. Mc Mulen, and hereafter the firm name will'beG. W. Milford & Co. Mr. Groves is well aud favorably known to maoy ofour citizens who will be pleased to learn of his success. The firm will lose none of its popularity by the acquisition of these gentlemen, I was miserable with Cbronio Catarrh. Peruna is my remedy and no other. Wm. Boyd, Pittsburgh. Tho friends of Hon. M. L. Lock wood, of Clarion ( county, ora urging him to become the Democratic candi date for Congress in this district in the sneuing campaign. Of course the Republicans propo30 to elect their man this time; that is a foregone conclu ion ; but tho Democrats could Dot got a stronger candidate anywhere in the district than Mr. Lockwood, and if there is a shadow of a chance for them to win, it lies in the selection of him as their candidate. If the acci dent should again huppen, of which there is not the slightest danger, that the Democrats should slip in their man, wljal an improvement Mr. L. would be on the present Incumbent. The Tioueeta & Allegheny River Railway is causing considerable ex citement in financial circles. Books have been opened to receive subscrip tions at their general office in Oil City, at May, Park & Co.'s Bank in Tio nesta, and at 115 Broadway, New York City. This is a remarkable line low grades and ea?y alignment. Mr. Whittekin informs us that the maximum grade will be about 12 feet per mile, aud maximum cirvature 8. Tke line is crooked but yet its general directiou is on about a direct line be tween the termini, South Oil City, and Sheffield, Pa. Hurry the thing along and let us have the tbiug done with ; there ha3 been talk enough to build three roads, but it now looks like cue of the certainties of the near future. Good. The lumbermen of Warren county met at Warren on the 2d and organ ized the "Northwestern Lumberman's Association," with Hon. L. D. Wet more as Presideut, II. A. Jamieson, Vice President, James Clark, Treas urer, and James A. Wood, Secretary. The objects of the association are to ascertain the amount of production and consumption, the cost of manu facture, and to fix prices for certain grades and lengths. Ridgway Demo crat. This association held their second meeting in Warren last week, perfecting an organization and further adopting the following as a bill of prices for hemlock lumber, on board cars : "From 20 feet long and under, 9 per M. ; 22 feet to 26 feet inclusive, $10 ; 28 feet to 32 feet, inclusive $11 ; selected boards including sound scocks, $11." Tidioute News. The lumbermen along te Tio uesta are jubilant. The rise of Friday and Saturday gave them an opportu nity to get a nice lot of their lumber out, and on Saturday and Monday most of them pulled out down the river. Messrs. Wheeler & Dusenbury have ruu several Alleghenies and have one, and five creek rafts at this place yet, and twenty-six creek pieces at ther mills at Newtown. Ford & Lacy have their lumber pretty much out, and likewise all the rest at Nebraska. There is considerable yet to come from Bearcreek, Lamentation, Buck mills, Bob's creek, Minister and Fox burg. The Salmon Creek Lumber Co. will not be ready to run until the next rise. We believe they uid not run any on the present water. Messrs Brace & Allen of Braceville, will, we understand, build a number of barges for the down-river trade for the pres ent and comiug season. This is as it should be. Build the barges and boats at home and then run tbem down, instead of running the lumber and let some one else do the building. This industry belongs to us and it is but right that we should have it. Let others do likewise. Oil News. Tho drillers will commence work on the Tionesta Oil Co.'s Bsaver Valley well this week, perhaps to-day. The reason they have not begun sooner is that their boiler was delayed at the shops. The well ought to be down in two weeks with good luck. Tbe Derrick yesterday morning con tained the following items from the oleagiuouo regions of Sheffield : Clark, Armor & Fester's No. 4, was completed last week. The drill found from four to five feet more saud than iu the other wells, but the showing of oil is na better. It will make an av erage Sheffield well. The Shank & Stewart well is a small producer. The Wetmore well is showing up for a hundred baarel send off. The Sigel Crof'ey company's, on East Branch, will be a good oue. The Horton & Magee, on lot 408, is on top of the sand with the tools stuck. Mark her a good one. Ihe Union oil company s JNo. 6 is a good one. rtimiwM ' '--Some greatly needod repairs are being madi on a number of sidewalks In town, which had been allowed to become so fearfully dilapidated as to be almost impassible. Theso repairs are all right for tho time being, but as soon as tho weather becomes settled they should be replaced by new ones. This thing of allowing one man to patch up his walk year after year and compel another to build a new one is not doing the square thing. All should be served alike, and when a walk is worn out tear it up and put down a new one, and by so doing we will have decent sidewalks all the time, instead of occasionally. Speaking of sidewalks the following from the New Bethlehem Vindicator may be of interest to our authorities : We have repeatedly ppoken of the necessity of repairing the streets and sidewalks of our town, and have pre dicted that sorno one would yet be hurt and the borough be brought into a good-sized bill of damages. In some cases the warning was heeded and in others it was not. Now the borough is in imminent danger of a suit of damages tor injuries received from a fall ou the sidewalk extending from the corner of the Martin House to the railroad. The injured party is Mr. John W. C. Sedgewick, a painter by trade, who has been confiued to his room for a week or more with a severe attack of hernia, or rupture, brought on by a fall on this sidewalk. This gentleman will in all probability be conhDed to his room for several weeks yet, as well as being in a measure crippled for life. Ihe only thing which we can see that would prevent the borough from being brought in for the damages would be a nonpressure of the suit. Brookville had a trial of it, it is our turn now, and all the other towns that neglect their pavements will catch it in turn, just see if they don t. Garfield Monument. The undersigned has been appointed to act for the Garfield National Moo umental Committee of the Society of the army of the Cumberland, to receive subscriptions for the Garfield National Monument, to be erected at the Na tional Capitol ia honor of (he illus trious President.
