j-c.xr is for a Governor, Lieutenant
Governor, Secretary of Internal
Afldits, a JuRtice of tlo Supreme
Court, 25 State Senators fcr four years,
201 members of Assembly for two
years, 27 members of Congress, and
important local officers in every county
in the State. The fight for Governor
and other State officers, and for mem
bers of the Senate and House, will be
hotly contested. The twenty-five State
Senators to be elected will have a vote
for United States St nator in January,
1885.
ma
In 1878 the Greenback party in
Pennsylvania polled over eighty-one
thousand votes for Governor; in 1879
it polled over twenty-seven thousand
votes for.Trenaurer ; Jo. 1$S0 jits Else-.,
toral ticket bad over twenty thousand
votes ; in 1881 its vote is nearly fifteen
thousand. Of this vote, of 15.000,
round numbers, 4,015, over J a "; fourth,
comes from tho counties of Crawford,
Venango, .Warren, Mercer, Clarion
and Forest, where the financial heresy
seems to have taken the deepest root.
In the elder and more populous coun
ties Greenbackiom is as dead as adoor
nail, and it will soon be dead in the
outlying districts. Venango Spectator.
The Cuiteau trial drags along very
slowly. The defense is et ill calling
witnesses, and U likely to continue to
do so for days and perhaps weeks to
came. All the witnesses for the de
fense are called with the one point in
view, that is, to prove the assassin in
sane. There is a feeling of uneasiness
growing in the minds of the people
that the murderer may escape, the
gallow by the insanity dodge, and
everybody begins to feel a sort of re
gret that some of the shots which have
been fired at the villian did not bit
tho fatal spat, and put him out of the
way, thus saving a great deal of time,
money and anxiety.. Yesterday's Der
rick says : "In the Guiteau trial yes
terday, the criminal was permitted to
interrupt and interlard the proceed
ings without a single, check from the
Judge, s Judge Cox is evidently unfit
for the position in which be is placed,
by the force of circumstunces, and is
gathering about him, by his singular
conduct, an amount of unpopularity
which it will be difheuit for hira to
overcome in future years. There is
no mora, dignity maintained in that
court than is exhibited in any of the
lower courts where cases of a trivial
cnaracier are tried, it is surprising
that the beast Guiteau is permitted to
air his egotism and disply his legal
acquirements, or tho want of them,
before a gaping crowd. It is hard to
bear, but like many onather unpleas
ant predicament, will have to be en
dured. -
