are done when it is too late to ' refute
them. There is not a voter in the

ville have been improved by a sid
ing up and a new fence. The Flem
ing Hill school-house has had a new
most of the ranchers who have a fam
ily, havo more or less capacious houses.
One of the most striking features
of this valloy are tho Butte Mountains,
which rise abruptly from tbo plains.
Ihey are about twenty miles long,
three miles wide, and the two peaks
aro some 1500 feet high. They are
perfectly disconnected from any and
every other mountain range, and com
pletely surrounded by tho prairie.
The whole of this country is so level,
and the rivers have such low banks,
that they have to protect themselves
by an immonse system of lereeage.
The height of the levee on Feather
river ia from six to thirty feet, average-
ing about twelve feet. The building
