S. Brockway, 1 Co. Supt. of Forest County. ; Tionesta, Pa., March 28, 1881. j Republican County Commitiee. ! The members of the Republican bounty Committee of Forest County ire requested to meet at the office of ;Ion. E. L. Davis, Tionesta, n Tues lay evening of court week, May 17, 881, and fix a time for holding the lepublican Primary Election, and ransact such other business of import ,nce as may come before thetu. It is larticularly desired that all he pres- nt, as the meeting will be an import- nt one. Quintain Jamieson, Chairman. Tionesta, Pa , April 19, 1881. - ihe treason of Mahone ia a prolific bject for Democratic comment now, od all because this readjustcr of Vir int voted with the Republican side f the Senate. It is a historical fuct "hat wheD he took up arms against the Juited States in 1881 the treason of lahone found no condemnation in the democratic press. Whence the infer nee, that treason to their party is re arded by Democratic statesmen as a reater crime than treason against the ountry. Maadville Republican. THE NATIONAL CAPITOL. - 1 peoial to the Republican. ; Washington, D. C, Apr. 14, '81. It is quite natural that there should I e some objections to the plan adopted 1 y Secretary Wiudom in providing for I ia maturing government bonds. A )od deal of chagrin is manifested by '; lose who loudly asserted that he had i 3 power to take the step he has iken, in finding that the law ofiices of jvernment advise the Secretary that ; e has. Now the opponents of the lan assert that it will not succeed, jat the bond holders will prefer e redemption of their bonds vlher than have tho interest :ale to 3 per cent. The re jr.ns already received at the Treas ry department, from some of the acting banks and bankers of the ; ountry, indicate that the method lopted by the Secretary is meeting ; ith unexpected success, and it is tubtful if ho will be called upon to a any of the 104 millions to meet the quirements ot those who demand the jilemptiou of their bonds. '. (Jieueral Wra. Mahone was elected ( the United States Senate byllepub- cn vote?, therefore it is untruthful i id indecent to speak of him as lmviug en unfaithful to those who elected in, he was not elected as a Democrat t v Demucrutij votts alone, and J. K. WKNIC, would have been false to the confidence placed in him by tho Republicans of the V irginia Legislature if he had gone to the Senate to obey the dic tates of Democratic caucus, or to help the Democrats defeat the Repub licans on partizan questions. Yet to day the Democrats are particularly anxious to make it appear that a bar gain must have been nioue as his rea son for voting against the Rourbous. Yesterday tho debute iu the Senate whs at fever heut again, words more forcible thau polite were exchanged betweeu Seuators Mahone und Hill, and at one time it seemed as though the old method of settling personal quarrels in the South would be resorted to, to settle their difficulty, however, cooler counsels prevailed and upon the adjournment of the Senate it was thought that nothing would ba done outside. The public are anxiously expecting a speech from Senator Ed munds upon the present political im broglio, ho has receutlv letumed from Florida, where he has been sojourning a few weeks for his health. Senator Conger, we hear, is preparing a speech on this aosorbing question. His maiden speech in the Senate was lis tened to by a large crowd of admirers. His hostility to tho Bourbon Democ racy, and the course they have pur sued in the Senate since the com mencement of the extra session is well known. Secretary Kirkwood yesterday ap pointed Ex-Congressman Price, of Iowa, to the position of Chief Clerk of the Indian Office. The office being without either Commissioner or Chief Clerk this appointment virtually places Mr. Price in the position of Commiss ioner of Indian Affairs, the position co which he has been nominated by Pres ident Garfield, as, under existing law, the Chief Clerk is authorized to act as Commissioner when the office is va cant. Mr. Price is in Washington, and is expected to take charge of the Indian Bureau to-day. Phil. NEILLTOWN NOTES. Mike Burkitt has moved over to Fagundus. J. D. Bnrchfield is home from Meadvilla? A Literary Revolution Challenge, j The old-line publishers have, very naturally, not been well pleased with the uow famous, "The Literary Revo lution" ; and in depreciation of its character have laid special stress upon the claim that in chennenin? books so vastly it is against tho interest's of American authors, ihe devolution boldly meets this assertion by state ments as follows : 1st. That thev nro already paying to American authors more money than any other publish ing house that is less than twenty five vn ra nfct'i M iuhod 9t That A ; j . . ...... ...v. i unt iiuicuunu authors rarely receive from publishers a copyright exceeding 10 per cent, upon the retail price of their books actually sold. 3d. That at least one half and probably more nearly three fourths, of the booki published by American authors have been published ut the author's expense, the publishers furnishing no money, and paying no copyright, but themselves receiving a large percentage upon sales made. 4th. That they propose hereafter to pay to American authors for accepta ble mauuscripts a copyright of 15 per cent, iustead of 10 per cent, and tbey claim that their low prices, aud im mense sales resulting therefrom, are far more in the interest of authors than much larger copyright on the commonly limited uumlier of sales "One thousand book?, profit $1.00 each-Sl,000. Ooe million books, profit one cent each-Sl.000." . As an example of an American copyright book, they issue, in an ex ceedingly handsome form, the famous poetical, historical, and satirical Amer ican classic, "M'Fingal, an Epic Poem," by John Trumbull, with very full annotations by the eylebrated his torian Benson J. Lossing, LL. D. This poem is almost as much a part of American history as the battle of Bunker Hill itself, and Dr. Lussing has greatly increased both its interest and its intrinsic value by his historical comments tind illustrations. This book was published a few years ao by one of the old publishing houses at the price of S2 00 per copy, aud had only a very limited sale. The publish ers claim that the reception of their new edition guarantees a sale of at least 50.000, or even more probably 100.000 copies ; and Mr. Lossiug will, of course, reap a handsome leward, even from the small royalty upon the low price.
