Sesator Wallace lays Lis only
interest Id Pennsylvania politics now
it with reference to the legislature.
This is precisely what everybody knew
long ago.
Mr. Wahburne expresses the
opinion that dark horses are not in
the race this year. It does look as if
it would be a squaro neck and neck
race between Grant and Blaine.
Kearney has come to the conclu
sion that there is not enough freedom
left in this country to be worth saving.
His own freedom is somewhat limited
just now. It is what the Democratic
editors would call a 7 by 8 freedom
Senator Wallace says his only
ambition is to get a Democratic can
aiaaie lor president woo can carry
Pennsylvania. If be has this arabi-
lion, u is a good thing lie has no
others, because Im entire time will be
needed to find the man. No micro
scope has ever buen made powerful
enough to detecct the Democrat who
is able to carry the Keystone State
next fall. Senator Wallace w a hu
morist of the drollest, dryest sort.
MeadvUle Republican.
The Greenbackers of Venango will
hold a Convention next Tuesday, we
suppose to nominate a County ticket,
la case there are enough members o
the party left to fill the offices. Should
they not have sufficient material avail
able for the Assembly, doubtless J. L.
Dswoody would be willing to accept
an endorsement. lie has already
been selected by the Democracy as
sort of forlorn hope, and might possi
oiy win ii a nan-dozen other parties
could be induced to pool their issues
and unite upon him solidly. Franklin
Dennis Kearney languishes in the
California jail, and the dispatches
from San Francisco state that he is
very much depressed. This ought to
be the condition of a man in his situa
tion. Law and order have been com
pletely vindicated and Saa Francisco
people now proudly hold up their
heads and say, "our judiciary can be
depended upon to protect the commu
nity against incendiaries and seditious
demagogues." The Jaw and order
jieonle of San Francisco are now in
quiring into the character of the Sand
Lot utterance of Mayor Kalloch, with
a view to instituting proceeding for
bis impeachment.
The Bribery Cases.
Tho bribery convicts, Keroble, IV
Iroff, Rumberger, Salter and Craw
ford were up before Judge Prarson at
ITarrisburg, on Monday, and received
their sentence, which is as follows:
"One thousand dollars fine each, costs
of prosecution, and imprisonment in
the Eastern reuitentiary for one year
at hard labor iu solitary conTinement."
Regarding the effect of tho sentence
upon the prisoners we cull the follow
ing from the Pittsburgh Com.-Gazette's
report :
As the words "hard labor" carno
from the Judge's lips, Kimble started
and turned quickly toward his counsel,
Col. Mann and Judge Brewster. His
eyes were glassy, with heavy dark cir
cles about them, and his features pale
and rigid. The prisoners were then
removed to the county jail, where they
are to-night.
Ytxur reporter was around there to
night add law a very sad sight. Col.
Rumberger stood close to the cell door
alking like a maniac and protesting
that no one should make him sleep
there. "Gentlemen, I want to go to
my hotel: I must go there; J cannot
stay here; my wife's dying; let me
go," he cried repeatedly. Kemble
ooks more like a corpse than a living
man. Uld Jesse Urawturd, who will
be seventy years old on the 28th of
Juue, lies prostrate on his pallet, a
physical wreck. But a year or two ago
is was the Democratic candidate for
Congress in his district. Salter comes
tlose to the cell door and protests
most emphatically that they have been
dishonorably dealt with by Attorney
General Palmer, who, he says, gave
bis word that they should be par
doned before they consented to plead
guilty. PetrofTsits in his cell tearing
a newspaper into bits, and noticing no
one. Over in the Lochiel
Hotel BU8
Mrs. Kemble in
her
reotn almost a
raving maniac.
Later. The prison physician, was
sent for to-night to attend Col. Rum
berger, who, the doctor states, has lost
his reason in consequence of the im
prisonment.
Our Washington Letter.
Special to the Republican.
Washington, D. C, Apr. 22, '80.
The deraagoguery of the Democratic
party was never better illustrated than
in the case of the "Immediate Defic
iency Bill." Four months ago this
bill- was drafted and passed the House ;
the Senate delayed it for a while then
amended, and 6ent it back to the
House, where it has laid in the com
mittee for three weeks without a single
effort to bring it (o the attention of
the House. When at last, in obedi
ence to a public, clamor, and fault
finding, the Democrats bring it up.
they immediately get in a great hurry
and want it passed, political riders,
and all without one word of debate,
thus endeavoring to deprive the mi
nority of their legal right to debate a
question of importance. The Repub
licans, of course refused to be deprived
of their rights, and are determined not
to let the bill pass without exposing
some of the political "jobs" contained
in it. The Democrats kuowing of
course that such au exposure would
damage them, insist upon no debate,
and the 'Immediate" deficiency bill,
which ought to have' been, and the
Republicans wanted to have, passed,
four months ago, sticks. Of course
for the justifiable delay caused b
Democratic stubbornness, the Repub
licans will be made to bear the blame
of the whole four mouths. But delay
or no delay, the Republicans are bound
to have their rights, and to expose
Democratic trickery wherever they
find it, and I tbiuk the people wil
forgive them the time and thank them
for the service.
inn two jjemocrauc conventions in
lew York this week show that the
Tilden and Kelly elements cannot be
united. Of course Tildeu will get the
vote of the State in the Convention
but he also knows that if he is nomin
ated that Tammany will bolt and tbu
defeat him at the election. This pros
pect is encoursgiug to Republicans
who forsee Tilden nomination. This
whole canvass so far is peculiar. The
Democratic States are trying to fore
Grant upon the Republican party, aud
lilden is trying to secure the Demo
cratic nomination through the votes of
Republican States. Democrats think
ing they can beat Grant, and Reoub
licans knowing they can beat Tilden
lhe ueneva Award Bill has been
indefinitely postponed. The Senators
who have distinguished themselves i
this debate are Blaine and Edmunds,
Larpeuter and Thurman, also distin
guisnea themselves, but on the wron
bide of the aigunaent. Senator Blaine
won bis point in having the Insurance
Companies stricken from the list.
