REPUBLICAN STATETICKET.
TOR SLTREME JUDCIK,
HENRY GREEN,
of Northampton Couuty.
TOR AUDITOR OEXEIUL,
JOHN ;A. LEMON,
of Blair County.
Illinois Republicans are for Grant
first, Washburne eeconJ, and Blaine
the next titue.
Judge Jeremiah t. Black says
"Pennsylvania is a Democratic State."
Not of Mr. Black's kind of Democra
cy, however.
Speaker Randall has again been
compelled, "for the sake of the Demo
cratic jiarty," to suppress Congressman
Weaver, the Iowa Greenbacker.
Ex-Seuator Morrill, of Maine,
wouldn't object to the nomination for
Vice President in the event of Senator
Blaine's defeat in the convention. lie
would make a capital presiding officer
of the Senate.
The Democratic members of Con
gress are chafing terribly under the
restraint put upon them by the leaders,
and some of them are threatening to
break the gags, let the consequence be
what they may.
It is being whispered in Massachu
setts that General Butler is suspected
of an intention to run for Governor
this year. Butler will probably be
willing if it will afford any amuse
ment to the boys.
The Chicago union vetern club, the
largest organization of soldiers in the
country, goes back on "Weaver and his
back-pay bill with a vengeance. The
association declare that they want
none of it, and request their Congress
men to fight the insanity.
Western Correspondence.
Lone Rock, Wis., Feb. 10, 1880.
With your permission I aek for
space in the columns of the staunch
old Forest Republican for a few
items from this locality. Times are
quiet at preseut compared to what they
were at the opening of winter ; the
weather is warm and pleasant f.ml
every indication is for spring. We
have had very little snow here this
season and at present the ground is
bare and the ladies are mourning the
privilege of taking their "young man"
out for a leap year sleighride.
The winter grain sown here last
fall, although tho winter has been
open, is not materially damaged and
bids fair for a good crop the coming
harvest. Produce of all kinds is at
good figures, and now the farmer of
the west is reaping the fruits of his
labors, and as money is plenty we all
realize the fact'that times are improv
ing. I have' tho pleasure of receiving the
Crookston Chronicle, of Polk Co.,
Minn., W. R. Dunn, Editor and Pro
prietor, As your readers are acquainted
with Mr. Dunn, I will say that ho is
publishing a live Republican paper,
devoted to tho interests of the farmer's
of the countiy, and located in the
great wheat belt of the north west.
bhould any of the good people of
Forest county contemplate emigrating
west my advice is take the Chronicle
and be posted.
Tho wis men of this State are
again at the Stale Capital making
laws, also endeaveriug" to pass the
Capital Punishment law, for this State
never hangs for murder, but sends
criminals to State Prison for life, and
eventually pardons them out, aBd
some peison has discovered this mode
of proceedure aud is trying to stop it
by hanging the guilty parties.
A General Reuuion of Wisconsin
Soldiers is to take place at Milwau
kee next summer commencing on the
7th of June and continuing one week.
We anticipate a pleasant time. A
general invitation is extended to old
soldiers of other States to meet with
U3. The State furnishes the necessary
' rations, camp aud camp equipage.
Among the noted persons expocted
are Grant, fiherniau, Logan, and sev
eral other distinguished statesmen.
Politically we are principally Graot
nun in this State, with a few scatter-
ing for Blaine, and since the settle
ment of the Maine muddle the Demo
crats and Greenbackers are exceed
ingly quiet, and many are ashamed of
the party they belong too. So would
I it I was ever guilty of supporting
either of the above panics.
Another effort is being made by our
representatives in Congress for the
Fox and Wisconsin rivers. As each
western State is interested in the nav
igation of the streams above men
tioned it is expected that ere long
steamers from the Mississippi will pass
into the lakes without any difficulty.
More anon, N. B. II.
Star Twinklings.
We had a "Spelling Bee" on Dutch
Hill, ou the evening of above date,
but on account of the inclemency of
the weather the Whig Hill school
could not attend. Their teacher, F. F.
Whittekin, came, however, through
mud and storm to excuse his school.
None but the Dutch Hill scolars were
iu attendance, except a few from Ross
Run, and one or two from Whig Hill.
Sides were choen from the home
school and after spelling about one
hour and twenty five minutes tlio last
two were put down on the word
cygnet);', Misses Mary Smith and
Vernie Heath were the last two thf.t
remained standing.
President H. E. Gilluspie then an
nounced iDtermiseiou of five minutes,
which judging from the amount of
talking and laughing was highly ap
preciated by all of the boys and girls,
"ye pedagogues" included.
-After intermission those present
were entertained for about three-'quar-trs
ot an hour by literary exercises
in which all who participated acquitted
Ihemselves very creditably.
