John Petkkson, Chairman. Tionesta, Feb. 10, '80. Rev A. O. f?tone will preach in the M. E. Church next Sunday eve ning.' M. E. Sunday School at 10 o'clock a. m., and Presbyterian Sunday School at 3 o'clock p. in. 1 ' The oil market closed last night at S1.08 1-8. After Valentin day Washington's birthday will bo the next important holiday. --Mr. J. C. Curnwell, of Stoneboro, has been in town for a few days on a busine.'s visit. The spicy Franklin Evening JV ii now a regular and welcome visitor to this office. Mr. J. JWBall and lady, for merly "of tiftst Hickory, now Brook ville, Pa.,' spent Sunday in town. Valentine' day "next Saturday, when the P. O. D. will probably reap a rich harvest in one-rent stamps. Lent begins to-day, but that hasn't anything to do with the chap to whom we Lent our overshoes thee weeks ago. ' , The weather is biecking in ou our -sleighing badly, and uuless a change takes place soon, it's good-bye "beautiful." Mr.' W. R. Reck, of Straltanville, Pa., was in town a day or two ibis week. Ha is looking well, as . usual, and reports his family likewise. i Drilling was resumed on the Hill Farm well on Monday, by Mr. Wol cott, and with no bad luck tho well will be down in two weeks or less. --Mr. Ii. F. Caldwell spent lust Sunday in Tionesta. Ben now holds the position of superintendent of a large machine shop, at Sandy Point, Butler Co. Tho days are growing longer, and a full day's wojk can now be -put in without candle light. This is a gratification to employer if not to ttnploye. The revival at the M. E. Church, although having been going on over eight weeks, bas lost none of its inter est, and many are nightly going for ward to seek the Lord. The dedication of the newM. E. Church at Whig Hill, will tako place at two o'clock p. m., iuatend of seven as appeared in our last issue. If the going is goad a large turnout may bo expected. Mr. Frank Rikei has left with us a tintoihy stock, raised on his brother's farm, near Bay City, Mich., which measures sixteen feet. It is quite a nri curiosity in these parts, and any one wishing to take a look at it should call. The creek and back channel are frozen over, making glad the hearts of those who expect to put up ice. There are also several spots of good skating which U being taken advantage of by our youngsters, and some of tbe oldsters. "When tbe Roses Como Again" was eung with good effect from Olean to Titusville, by telephone, recently. We know a party which sung the same piece from Tionesta to Pleaantville t'other night, but not by Ulephoue by a "jngfull." A sister of Mr. J. E. Hillard. teacher of the higher bra'ich of our bor ough school, died at Neilltown, this county, where fche had beeo teaching for Botue tiiue, on Sunday latst. Her remains w ere taken to the home of her pareuts, in Burnett township, for bur ial, on Monday. We are without par ticulars, but will endeavor to give them next week. The platform adopted by the Slato Convention at llarrisburg on tho -1 ill int.', ia published on our second p-age ; ntao u letter from our llarrisburg correspondent, giving an accouut of the proceedings of the cou- vention. Although his report may seem a little Blainely it is probably the truo state of the ense, better than anything we could gather. Tbe plat form is one which will commend itself to the intelligent voters of the Stale, as a document replete with sound ideas and puro punciples. Of the candidates nominated for State offices, Judgo Henry Green for Supreme Judge, and Senator John A. Lemon for Auditor General wo shall speak in tho future; 6ufiice at present to say, two better men could not be found in ibis or any other State. The seat in the Convention, of our Senatorial rel egate, E. L. Davis, Eq., who had re ceived lite concurrence of Clarion county, waB contested by Cochran of Cauierou county, but thanks to the fairness decency of tho committee ,on contested seats, Mr. Davis was seated. According to the parly usages the position belonged to Forest county thii year, it haviug given way to the other counties on all previous occa sions, and the contest on tho part of Cmnerou county, was only a fair exhibit of the porcine proclivities which some people are possessed of. Jos. BuiTington, of Armstrong, and Jas. E. Long of Jefferson, were up pointed delegates to the National Con vcnlian from this Congressional dis trict; with A. W. Taylor of Indiana, and J. B. Aguew of this plaee, as Al ternates. W. L. Fox of Clarion is the Presidential Elector from this district. The convention was a very spirited one, but adjourned with good feeling among the Blaine and Grant delegates. A very noisy, loud mouthed sled load of individuals from this place went to Pleasantvilie on Saturday night last, for a sleighride. Leaving here about half-past seven P.easant ville was reached in about two hours. All along the way-tho uight was made hideous by what the party probably thought was music, but what the natives along the route must have thought has not yet been ascertained. Arriving in Pleasnutville the party was dumped out at tho Eagle House where supper was ordered. While awaiting supper tho party was right royally entertained by Capt. Barber, Pleasantville'8 genial and efficient Postmaster, who tells a story equal to Mark Twain orBob Burdelt. Billiards, "&c."' were also indulged, especially the latter. Supper ready all hands seated themselves and partook heartily of the same. Althoh.jrQtteu up "on the spur of the moraeuaUi'as first class in every re5pect, -just such an one you always get at the Eagle House. After supper the parlfiilged iu more billiards, &e., cl -?out 11 -o'clock, when tho adieus were bid and the boistrous galoots lit out for home, but not uutil they had heartily thanked the jovial, good-natured host, Mr. W. II. Hancox, tor his kind in dulgence and forbearanee, and the geueral good treatment shown them. When traveling that way one should always make it a point to stop at tho Eagle House, for there you are waited on in a cordial and pleasant manuer by host, hostess and subordinates, and wheu you 6i t down to the table you will find tho very choicest the market affords, ptcpared iu a most palatable manuer. On the way home the boys weren't so loud, the thermometer having dropped te about 6 below zero, soon froze up their mouths, and having nothing to "thaw out" with they were obliged to keep mum. Our cit'zens should not forget that the spring elections will take place noxt Tuesday. As yet theie seems to be very little interest mani fested in tho matter, which is by ntr meaos fs it should, for we want good men to fill the variout offices, and they should be looked up beforehand. The greenbackers hava issued a call for a meeting on Saturday next, which means that tbey propose to put tickets iu the field, and, if possible sweep the board. Now, while politics should have very little to do with small mu nicipal governments, yet if that is their game they should be met, aud a good ticket put up. To an outsider it looks as though the greenbackers thought they had t'.e "bulge" on the people and were going to elect their men whether they were fit or not. Let the citizens be on their guard. Teams are at a premium just now, and old plna that were placed on the Rtipcranuatcd list year3 ugo arc being dragged frcun the stall and pressed into the service. Never ws teaming more brisk iu this section. The Comruittm on Permanent Certificates will no t in this place on the 6th of March, ext, as per notice published lsewher. Teachers who intend to apply f r peirnansut certifi cates should make n note of this and be iu attendance. W. E Lathy Esq., of Newtown, Kansas, has our thanks r a batch of newsy aud eulertainiag Kansas and New Mexico papers. We uudrstaod Mr. L. is rapidly working into a foad practice which his friends in this county will be glad trf learn. Thus far tho groundhog has made a success of it. If his prognostications hold out the full six weeks he will have gained reputation and popularity enough to be nominated for President o.i the greenback ticket, with Ben Butler for the second place. Some of our citizens have com menced to lay in their ice, which is right. It is scarcely probable that this fruit will be very abuudant this winter, and those who want to indulgn in it next summer should gather it in while it is to be had. Every available rig in town wbs out list Sunday, and the merry jingle was heard almost incessantly during ihe At y. Revival meetings frequently put a check to dancing, but some christians as well as sinners, will sleigh ride on Sunday if they have a chance. The Free Methodist church was crowded to overflowing last Sunday evening, and many were obliged to leave, being unable to find even stand ing room. Rev. Barnhart announced that up to that time upward of forty had been forward seeking their soul's salvation. The meetings are still in progress, and are attended with much interest and good success. The stave mills in this section have nearly nil started up again, the snow affording the owners a good chance, to get in the bolts which have been piled in the woods all winter. The stave saw of the mill here is now being usail to finish up the sawing at Ross Run, but tho bolts are coraiug in lively, and if the sleighing continues u week or two they will have enough bolts to keep them running till late in the summer. Some pecularities for 1880. There will be four eclipses of. the sun aud two of the moou during the year. One of the eclipses of the sun and both of those of the moon will be total. There will also be an occulation of Mars to commend it to star gazers. It is leap year, and there will, be five Sundays in February. Fourth of July will come on Sunday. Lent will begin Feb ruary 11, and Easter Sunday falls on March 2Uh. Ex. Once more has nitro glycerine hurled a human being into eternity. The accident occurred near Duke Centre, on Monday morning last. Two men were driviug along in a bob sled loaded with the dangerous stuff, when the sled upset causing an explo slon. Ono f the men jumped as the bled upset and was thereby miracu lously saved, while the other Howard Ilsckett, together with the two horses, was blown to atoms. Warren Beanlen, step-son of Mr. Chadwick, is lying very low with lung aud brain fever. He has been confined to his bed about two weeks, aud at this writing his syintoms are worse, and we are sorry to say very little hopo of his recovery is entertained by his phy sician and friend. Wurreu is a young man in his eighteenth year, and has always been respected for his quiet and gentlemanly bearing ; should he be takeu off thus early he will be very much missed by ell. May he take a turn for the better. Attention Teachers. The members of tho committee on Teachers' Permauent Certificates will meet at the Sheriff's Ofiiee, Tionesta, Pa., at 10:00 a. in., Saturday, March 6, 1880. Applicants for above grade of cer tificates having the requisite recom mendation properly signed and coun tersigned by the proper authorities and approved by the Co. Supt., should bd iu attendance at the above time and place, as this will probably be tbe last meeting during the year. F. F. Wiiitteki.v, Chairman. Clara E. Hcntek, Soc'y. Honor Roll. These two pupils are the smallest in their respective schools. After spell ing one quarter of an hour Miss Zuen del of the Dutch Hill school came off victor. After lutcrmiseion of ' ten minutes the pupils of each engaged iu "Rhetorical exercises," and all takiug part acquitted themselves very credi tably. Mr. R. Z. Gillespie, teacher of the Dutch Hill school, then invited the Whig XI ill school to participate with them in a liKeentertaiumeut next Friday evening. A good time is expected by all and we will have it. W. A. W. Local Institute.
