EDITOR, WEDNESDAY MORMXG, SEPT. 17, 1879. REPUBLICAN STATE TICKET FOR STATE TREASURER, IIox. SAMUEL BUTLER, of Chester County. REPUBLICAN COUNTY TICKET. FOR ASSOCIATE JUDGE. LEWIS ARNER. FOlt DISTRICT ATTORNEY, 8. D. IRWIN, ESQ; FOH COUNTY SURVEYOR, JACOB COOK, FOR COKOXER. JOHN HUNTER. The Greenbackers of this county nro again in a dilemma, p.s Mr. M. A. Morris lins declined to stand as a caudidate for Jury Commissioner. JSi okvile Republican. In the present rtato of parties in Maryland a discreet, united and earn est effort would give to the Republican party a fair chanco to put political nffairj in that State in such a condi tion as to insure the vote of the State for the Republican candidate for Pres ident next year. There will probably be four candidates for Governor this Fall, Republican, Democratic, Inde pendent and Greenback. Now is the time for Maryland Republicans to redeem that State. They cau do it. For tho Republican. On Faith and Oil. Men often speak of faith in meet ings. It is a refreshing subject to talk about, especially "a faith grounded on hope." We could write a cart lead of sentiments on this higher faith, reduc ing to black and while many theories never dreamed of by the theologians -but we wont do it. Yet the man who works industriously for the develope ment of trade, for the beuefit of the world (and himself too) in "wild-catting'' for oil, is entitled to credit; and is an example of faith, especially when by his acts he proves that that faith i3 backed by works. Yet to take that German poetsline as a standard: "That ho who makes one blade of grass to grow where not one grew before is a philanthropist," he who puts down an cil well, a more uncertain thing, and spends his funds in developeing the reoourccs of earth, dives into the mys teries of nature, to bless his section of country with prosperity, makes the desert' to "bud and " blossom as tho rose," from a financial standpoint. Have we such persons as we have de scribed among U3? Let us look about and see. Dr. Garsou Shamburg, a gentleman of great experience in the oil developements, and whose name is historical in the Yenaugo and Butler Districts, has moved into Forest, and is pleasantly situated at the mouth of West Hickory. He is a man of great ingenuity and foresight. He has become interested in that valley largely, and is developing and producing to-day large quantities of oil, as any one can see who will look at the line of his oil wells and works extending from the mouth of the creek up as far as the Fogle Farm. It is hardly worth while now to say, (what tho commercial world knows) that tho West Iliskory oil eclipses any lubricating oil in the market. This has long been demon- Etrated. Dr. S. has got the best of machinery, and is already making these old wells tell. The Dr. has un limited faith iu the territory. Then there is Geo. M. Kepler, who has put up a rig on th Charles XI ill farm, four miles above Tionesta, aud will soon have a well doivn. .His der rick and other buildings as well as "the enginery for action" are on the sod. we can only have hope that his efforts maybe crowned with the success which thoso efforts merit. He, too, has strong faith, and that faith mixed with the sand to go ahead. Of the Grandin Bros, who are, through their efficient agent, Feter Bony, sinking down wells in the wil derness of Salmon Creek and Ball town, you have heretofore apprized your readers by notes at various times They have proved that portion of the county beyond a doubt to be au oi section. Great credit is duo to them for their efforts, which have produced results that place the territory before the world as desirable. Dr. 3. S. Towler is still drilling J. E. WENIC, awiy "toward China," in Jeuks TV p. lie has been there over trvo years, and has full faith in oil there, and that too not without reason, for ho hao seen the evidence. His faith is heroic, and his pluck indubitable. lie is a man of science, and solid judgment. Ho knows tho belt crosses through that section, nuJ "although not seeking for light," literally, he is intelligently seek ing for that which is the foundation or source of light, viz: "Oil," and the writers word for it ho will eventually succeed. So much for some of those who are nobly struggling to developo our land, who have come into tho county from without our borders. But let us now look a little nearer home: For over a year Geo. S. Hunter, across the Alle gheny, beside the Depot, has bcn ob taining oil from lime to time at bis little well. This well was an improve ment on tho older one, just bjf the mill ; it is some 12 or 14 rods South of the old well. This showed to Hun ter that the quantity of oil increased as he went south, and in pursuance of that idea, moved by faith, he has put up a rig on South Hunter Run, below it, and commenced operations. I hope his full success may be chronicled. Hunter is wrapped up in his oil pros pects. His indomnitable persovernece must succeed at lasl. Time fails me to write of others, further than to say that too . much praise cannot be given to those wor thies who are endeavoring to devel opo the land.
