From a private letter we learn
that an oil well is being put down at
llrookston. Tho letter gave no particulars.
It is estimated that tho lives of
00,000 turkeys will be' pacrificed to
morrow in this Stato alone, to appease
the Thanksgiving appetite of tho people.
If a "tracking snow" does not
soon mnke us appearance, wo are
afraid some of tho hunters will leave
tho woods. It is slow still hunting-
this weather.
Sonic of our sportsmen report
having seen a few quail in tho neigh
borhood recently. This will ba good
news to the fraternity, as everybody
had supposed that this game little bird
had been exterminated in this section.
Tho M. R Church,' ever since it
was erected, has bad a debt banging
over it. Ilev. Stone is trying to raise
this debt by subscription, and this
morning he informs us that ho lacks
but little of the amount needed.
Mr. Woods has written to his
ngent here, directing that his oil well
machinery and fixtures bo roofed over'
and properly protected fiom tho
weather. It is probable that heojill
operate further in this S2ct:on in
spring.
The Marquis of Lome, the new
Governor-General of Canada, and his
lady, t'io Princess Louise, have ar
rived on American soil, and are wel
comed with enthusiasm by tho Cana
dians. The pair come highly recom
mended, and we have no doubt tho
new administration will bo a success.
The Commissioners have bought
a f:tfe for uso in their office, and from
what we can hear wo are inclined to
believe that they have struck a very
fair bargain. It is a largo Eafe, aud
cue of the satno sha forjwhic'han agent
asked them G00. . They paid S250 for
this safe in Oil City.
Kev. Stone announced last Sun
day evening that a (Quarterly Meeting
would bo held at Beau Farm, com
mencing on Friday evening next, aud
continuing over Sunday. Ou Satur
day, at 2 o'clock p. in. a conference
meeting will be held. A general in
vitation was extended to the brethren
to attend.
IL. A. Adams has arrived in town
and is again manipulating the saw at
the etave mill. In conversation with
him the other day, we inquired as to
his Ions by lire at lSradlonl. 113 in
formed us that if the inauranco money
was all paid, he wouM not be a loser
to any great extent. And he antici
pated no trouble about getting the in
surance.
Our river from Olean to Pitts
burgh is plentifully supplied with
boots devoted to taking the pictures of
tho dear people, either in the shape of
tintypes or photographs, from a small
gem to life size. As a general thing
wo believe their work will not compare
favorably with tho work of the best
artists in the large cities.
Still tho Xalioiudh ngitated. In its
Inst issue it slingi at us a half-column
of stuff which it designates as "pap."
Tho nanio is very appropriate, not on
ly to the half-column referred to, but
to everything else contained in its
reading columns. It sneer9 at our
management of tho ttmall-pox epidemic
last summer, and rnys the "citizens'
propot-o to donate; us a leather modal.
The "Doctor" knows that at the com
mencement of tho epidemic, tho boro
council, by an on'inanco approved by
tho burge??, placed tho management of
that matter into tho hands of a Saui-
tary Committee and Health Officer,
nnd wo must consequently thiuk that
he and tho "citiznus" are throwing mud
at others over our shoulders. Tho
"citizens" referred to arc two in num-
bur, and both are on the staff of the
National. Their car marks (very long
ones) are recognized, and we suppose,
of course, that they will contribute
their heads for material of which to
construct the medal. When they and
th editor of the National reflect ou
the gentlemen who managed tho small
pox business laat Eiunmer, they are
trying to besmirch those whose shoe
latchets they ara not worthy to un
loose. As to the skunk-skin diploma,
we decline the honor. Ve knew we
had the animal partly skinned, but
didn't expect ho would donate his hido
to us after we had finished the job. It
emits a bad odor at the distance we
have held it, at closo quarters it
would be unbearable. "We must coy
fess, however, that wo wore not' rTvV
pared to witness the base ingratitude
displayed by lha "Doctor," in affecting
to forget his medical -cima Mater (or

Philadelphia," or better known as
"Payno's Medical School." Don't

The old hickory tree at the hay
scales iu front of Derickson & Co.'s

the heart of the tree was found a ten-

thirty years ago a guide-board was
nailed to this tree, and he has no doubt
but this was one of the identical nails
used on that occasion.
