WEDNESDAY M0RS1XG, A'OV. 27, 1878.
Tha Outlook.
From tho Moiulvillo Republican.
At no time since tho panic of 1873
1
l.'ivo mero ueen bo many indications
of n return to prosperity as at the
present moment. European gold is
flowing into New York at tha rato of
ono million dollars a week to pay for
American products. In almost every
branch of our dirtrsiveJ industries,
we see confidence restored and activity
renewed. Tho concerted action taken
by tho bankers of New York and Bos
ton last week, With a view to help
along resumption, has already made
thnt desideratum a foregone- conclu
sion. The pre mi u pi on gold to-day is
only one-sixteenth of a cent. In all
departments of the jobbing trade, busi
ness is pH'.d to be better than it lias
been at any timo during the last five
years. Ilc;il estate lias suffered no
further decline in value for some time,
while rents have advanced vory per
ceptibly in many places. The lailroad
companies report that their business is
increasing, and fliat is one of the most
infallible indications of reviving pros
perity, lor tho railroads measure the
volume of business transactions as a
thermometer measures the intensity of
tlio beat. There 13 no longer any
doubt that tha 'hard times' are practi
cally over. 'The last five years have
brought ruin to many men and dis
tressing poverty to many others.
Homes have been Bold under the sher
iff's hammer, and farms taken by the
foreclosure of mortgages. Suffering
and distress have spread a gloom from
one end of the country to the other;
but the people have been steadily re
covering from the effects of the panic
'for two or three years past, and with
the beginning of next year, we predict
tjiat "haul times" will havo pretty
nearly passed out of men's thoughts
and conversation. We aro upon the
up-grade, and with hope aud confi
dence taking the place of distrust and
despair, wo will soon again be plung
ing with giant strides along the high
way of prosperity.
Od6 unquestionable benefit which
the country owes fo the bard time3 of
the last few years may be unmistaka
bly traced in the distribution of pop
ulation. From every quarter ofthe
Eastern States multitudes of those who
depend for their daily bread upon
their daily labor have found homes in
tLo "West. Very many of these per
sons, instead of waitiug in idleness for
i lie revival f industry and for re-en-ageaicut
in tlieir old eituationd, at
oaco employed thoir savings in remov
es ibeir families. Many others, hav
ing no savings, fcowevcr scant, have
' eeu enabled to .make the change
trough the liberality of others, former
; laployers frequently. .And it is ic
:?.rkable what cheerful h'ccounts are
.orally received fnjni .such ent
rants. It is needless to aay Chat they
0 always persons accustomed to work
1 who reckoned upon work S a
: cssary condition of their getting on
heir "Western .bomcs. And the re
t raade by most -'f those heard ficai
ih-At, assured of bod and raiment
. the present, they avo before them
3 prospect of independence for them
It us and families. Pjii hapa these re
nt cases, multitudinous in cumber,
..io pearccly needed to show that 3Ir.
i-coley's quaint advice, so often made
subject of a joke, was sound advice
i'ter all. Men, eepecially men still
. ung or of middle nje, ara foolish if
' ty do not tuico advantage of the ear
it opportunity to fix themselvob on
. ground, ever ready to sustain, if
i to enrich its cultivators. Com
: ;iul- Gazette.
There will bo 115 members in tho
Forty-sixth Congress who have never
Veen ia the House before. 51 aro Re
ubltcans, 5.i Democrats, and 8 Grteu-
clrTS. This will leave about 173
! members, and as there aro no new
.,:ber3 of largo legislative expori-
i.:c.or national prominence, it is safo
calcdata that legislation will bo
syra than ever shaped and the House
:u!i by tha few leaders who have sur
vived the fight before the people. Let
:iew material cotaes from tho south
ibau from any other section, aud they
.,i!l gain largely by keeping the same
legation iu 'Congress. New York
..I.i 16 inexperienced legislators,
..j.syK'ania l'J, Ohio 8, Miss&uri 1,
and Illinois 7. A largo majority of
these are Republicans, and their Hint
term is usually consumed in learning
the ways of tho House and becoming
familiar with the rules, so that their
influence raav bo felt.
Ex-Governor Hoffman, of New
York, hns recently relumed from
Paris. While there ho was thrown a
great deal in tho society of General
Grant ; aud while ho retains his Dem
ocratic views, and is opposed to him on
political grounds, cays tho personal
criticisms on him and bis habits are
"bosh." In brief, ho has a high per
sonal admiratiun for the ex-1'resideut,
developed by close personal acquaint
tauce, aud denies the truth of the fool
ish stories circulated against him.
Of the Stato Senators elected nt
the recent election, 11 r.re Republi
cans, 13 Democrats and 3 Grccnback
ers. Of thoso holding over and whose
terms do not expire until 18S0, 21 are
Republicans, and 3 Democrats. Tho
House will stand, Republicans, 111 ;
Democrats, 82 ; Grccnbackers, 8. Re
publican majority over all, 21. Re
publican majority on joiut ballot, 35.
