SOME FACTS AND FIGURES.
The Secretary of tho Treasury has
furnished the public a tabulated state
ment showing the volume of paper in
circulation each year for eighteen
years, and tba purchasing power of
the paper dollar as compared with
v gold on the first day of each fiscal
year. This statement is very remark
able, and will give the greenback ad
vocates an unpleasant surprise. A
great deal of loose statement has been
indulged in by th gentlemen who
teach that the legal-tender quality of
the paper dollar determines its value
W. R. DUNN - - -
" They will now learn that many things
are very uncertain in this mutable
world, and none more uncertain than
theories of finance. On the other hand,
the advocates who saw in. contraction
the perfect panacea for all our ills will
learn that the appreciation of the pa
per dollar has outrun the ratio of con
traction. All will be com polled to
admit that the laws that govern finance
are not fully comprehended by any
' mi
ono person, ine person who cives
some part of his attention to finance
lor six months is very apt to think
that ue has fathomed the subject. To
such a student alf who disagree with
him appear unconscionably stupid, and
there is a tendency to set all disseuters
aside as knaves aud fools. There will
probably have to be a revision of the
ories and a resetting of squadrons in
the field. The rosewater-colored theo
ries of the greenbacker can no longer
mislead and delude that portion of the
public which retains some regard for
ligures and facts.
To those who have attributed all the
distress and stagnation which was sud
denly precipitated upon the country
in 1873 to a 6udden withdrawal of a
large sum from the circulating curren.
jy,4t will doubtless be a surprise to
learn that there was in circulation at
that time a greater volume of paper,
Ly more than fifty millions, than there
was in 18G9 and 1870, which years
were exceptionally prosperous years.
It will perhaps etill more surprise such
persons to learn that on the 1st of
July, 1874, the currency volume had
increased upwards of thirty millions
over that afloat in 1873. Such are the
facts which appear in the statement
alluded to. The advance in the pur
chasing power of the paper dollar was
vet more impoitant. For though in
" the volume of the currency was
, one-hundred and twenty-five
millions greater than it was on the firs
day of the present month, the purchas
ing power of that volume was but
eight millions more than we hare to
day. But in 1865 tbe government was
paying its floating war debt, and vast
sums were disbursed. The volume o
the currency then reached nearly a
thousand millions, worth in gold not
quite seven hundred millions.
There was afloat in 1873 $750,000,-
000 in bank notes and legal-tenders,
whose real value was $648,000,000.
This was all paper, and the volume
was not reinforced by fractional silver.
There is to-day afloat $688,000,000 in
paper, and at least $40,000,000 in sil
ver coin in the aggregate say $728,
000,000, worth to-dny in gold $724,
000,000. We have this day, then, a
volume of currency greater in positive
value and in purchasing power by up
wards of thirty millions than we had
in 1865, when the currency volume
was the largest the country ever had.
As to volume there has been contrac
tion, but as to value, us to purchasing
power, there has been a remarkable
expansion. Every man is aware that
a dollar will purchase more of the
many necessaries of life to-day than
it did in 1865 by more than one-half.
The owner of a dollar can purchase as
much to-day as he purchased with two
dollars during the years we now re
gard as exceptionally prosperous. A.
man can to-day take a ten-dollar iiqte
and purchase a suit of clothes for
which he mu6t have paid twenty dol
lars five years ago.
It is common enough to hear allu
sions to years just preceding the war
as "good times." And in one sense
they were good times as compared with
1857-58. But so are these times
"good" compared with those years.
When complaint is made of the shrink
age in real estate, it is well enough to
remember that we have not jet reach
ed the shrinkage of that crisis. But
if 1860 was a prosperous year, what
will the inflationists say to the fact
that the volume and value of our cir
culation at this time is not less than
double that of 1860. We have not
doubled in population. Our real wants
have not at all increased. But we are
very poor, and business is flat. It
would not surprise us much to learn
that the retail trade of Philadelphia is
larger to-day than it was at any time
before the war. We do not positively
affirm it, but should the figures show
that, it would not surprise us in the
least. At some time in the future,
philosophers will perhaps look back to
this crisis and wonder that none of us
seemed to grasp the real question. For
it is very likely to turn out that tho
currency has had much less to do with
our evil case than several other things,
all in the nature of ewe lambs, cher
ished m the apple of our eyes, and in
the eyes of most us without fleck or
spot. North American.

"I Must Lie Down and Die."
The following is rh extract from a letter
dated July 21, 1877, to tho discoverer of
Bothesda Water. Tho winter U the Rev
T. 15. Fuller, 1. I)., I). C. L., Rector of St
G regory's Church, Toronto, Archdeacon of
of Niagara, etc., etc. The writer, at the
age of t0 years was a victim of KaccJtarine
Diabetes. His physician said (to use Dr.
Fullej's words) "ho could do no more for
me than lie had done ; that my disease was
incurable, and that 1 must lie down and
die." IWe should state here, en parenthe
sis, that our townsman, Joseph Fleming,
sq., is the sole ana only authorized arent
for this wonderful water for this State, as
well as for Ohio and West Virginia. To
return to Dr. Fuller: "In four days," ho
writes, "after taking the Water, I obtained
relief, and since that time I have taken no
medicine, consulted no medical man, and
presume, if I could give inysolf reasonable
rest, I would bo quite well."
Such testimony, from such a sourco,
should indeed have convincing wolght.
