HARD TIMES.
The following article appeared in
1 a Meadville Republican of the '2
A. It is from the pen of Col. Reis
er, and appears to us to embrace
a v.
o wnoie subject, it will do none
i our readers hurt to read the Colo
I's views, therefore we reproduce the
icle:
"Hard times is an unpleasant con
Joo of things to everybody, and it is
:ibtake to say that rich men prefer
Nobody makes as much money in
u J times as ia easy times, and one of
e causes of hard times among poor
a is financial embarrassment to rich
;-a. During the war, the rich made
'r fortunes greater much, more frc
. -atly than tho poor became wealthy
1 no other class Las suffered as much
the rich, by the shrinkage of values
. we could force business to the stand
rd of 1864-5 by legislation, that leg
. iation would be in the special interest
i the rich. The prevalent idea that
'.a preseut depression in business is on
. tm
ouni oi a scarcity, or currency is
s ibly erroneous. There never waa
le withiu tho memory of a living
i, when the currency of the coun
was greater, iu comparison to the
of the property of the country
jii it now is. in loou tho eutire
-iuk circulation of the country was
lvo huudred and seven million dollars
it increased uutil 18G3, when the State
i!ik circulation, National bank eir
tion, demand notes, legal tender
one and two year Jiotes of 18G3,
:1 intcmt notes and fractional
all tombiued,ngtre."ated the
sum of $983,318,085.70. Of this near
ly two hundred millions were in com
pound interest notes much of which
was hoarded and not in circulation in
a proper sense. To-day, the paper
currency of the country aggregates
$088,597,275.25, or about thirty per
cent, less than the greatest inflation of
tho war period. Will any man of
sense assert that the prosperous times
os 1865 were due to the $300,000,000
additional currency, or that the con
traction of that amount has produced
the present hard times? It is safe to
estimate the shrinkage in values since
865 at not less than two-thirds. Take
all the property of the country, real
aud personal, aud it was worth not less
than three times its present value.
ho Greenback orators put it even
higher than this, but we have been
careful to speak within bounds. Now
if times were flush, money plenty, and
in abundance to do the business of the
country, when we bad only yJ,UUU,
000, is it consistent with facts to say
that seven-tenths of that amount is in
sufficient to do tho business of the
country when values have shrunk to
one third tho standard of 1805? And
yet the Greenback newspapers are
howling for more currency as the only
antidote to the financial sufferings of
lie country.
"The truth is, we havo enough nion-
It is industry and economy, and
personal honesty which need increas
ing ; it is business integrity, and a de
termination on the part of all classes
o buy only what can be paid for, and
to put in a full day's work for a full
day's pay. If a million of our farmers
and mechanics were put into the army
and tha Government forced to buy the
guns, and ammunition, and horses, and
clothing, and rations, and the thousand
other thiugs required by men engaged
in butchering each other, good times
for those at homo would soon come
again, high prices for labor and pro
duce would rule aeaiD, and money
would be plenty, even if the aggregate
amount of the currency remained at its
present figure. This the Greenbacker
does not seem to understand. When
he comes to understand it he will not
be a Greenbacker. One of the first
things necessary to discover in a phy
sical disease is tho cause, and so of the
affections of the body politic, and un
less the leaders of the Greenback move-
meat cnu discover tho cause of hard
times we shall have little hopes of
their ability to treat the disease.''
Consumption Cured.
An old physician, retired from prac

Tho following is hii extract from a letter

sis, that our townsman, Joseph Fleininr,
Lsij., is the sole awl ui(l; culhorizi d iiiut
for this wonderful water for this State, as
well as for Ohio and West Virginia. To
return to Dr. Fiillor: "In four day." he
writes, "after taking the Water, I obtained
