Mrs. Beverly, the woman who was in the small-pox hospital, died on Thursday last, not, wo are informed, from small-pox, simply, but from a complication of diseases, which her weakened system was notabloto over come. Tho mau and child are both down but are improving. At a council meeting held on last Saturday evening, it was decided to buy the building lately occupied by the blacksmith, Beverly, and tear down aud remove tho same. An agreement has been entered into, and tho pur chase will bo made to-day. This will probably remove all danger of conta gion iu Tioesta. Miss Mame McCrea, of Eagle Rock, died of consumption ut her home on Saturday evening last. The fune ral took place on Monday, and several of her liiends from this place attended. The deceased was a bright, intelligent young lady, end had a large circle of friends who will sincerely mourn her early death. Never before since wo carao to this plaoe, teu years ago, has theio been as much water in tho river and creek as we have had this season. We hare had almost a continuous rafting stage since spring set in; tho only trouble has been that the lumber to run has not been manufactured, on ac count of tlio lw prices prevailing be low. t We have received a neat little book, entitled "Out of tho World," consisting of fables taken from the X. Y. World. . They are gotten up after the slylo of ..Esop'a Fables, only ;uod- crnixed very maternity. It is pro fusely illustrated by L S. Church, and has reached its thirteenth thousand. It is the most readable littles book v,e have conio across for a long time. The heavy rain on last Monday night caused considerable of a "high" iu tho creek, and tho consequence was quite a stir among the ruftoicn. Sev eral creek pieces from Coon Creek havo been landed at the mouth, and same run into tho river. Tho Dith ridge boom has been filled with logs, which will keep the mill running' fur some time. The Knox boom broke last night ami let out several logs, but has since been repaired. f- hot. Oscar Huddle, ton of Mr. Wm. Huddle, who-resides in Forest county, three miles north of Clariufr ton, while out 'hunting tquiriels Ju.J Monday, became the next victim from the carclesa practice of crossing a log aud pulling the gun after him muzzle foremost. The half-ounce ball lodged in the left side of his chest, and was extracted by Dr. Baker the famo ev ening the accident occurred. On Wednesday, Dr. J. W. M'Knight, of this placa wus called to couytiltatioa. He tells us that ho found the case a serious one, but entei tains some hopes of recovery. BrooLvillc Giqihic, 1C(h Barnctt Twp. and Whig Hill Notes. Wma Hill, July 27, 1878. Ed. Reiuhlican : We again take up the quill to note for your paper whet has fallen under our observation since last we wrote you. Having been over in Barnctt not long since, we first note a few items from thereabout : Rev. Payuo held a bush meeting on tho 13th and 14th, nt Cooksburg. All passed oiT nicely. The Rev. will hold a meeting of two days' continuance, nt Sigel, Jefferson Co., to-day and to morrow, 27th and 28th. A Quarterly Meeting was held at Marienville on the 20th and 21st of this month, by the M. E.'s. Iter. Barton, who re sides in Claringtou, preaches regularly at that plactr. Rev. Weldon preached in Claring tou Church on Sunday eve, 21st inst. Rev. Shcckler will preach every two weeks, on Sunday evening, at Claring ton Church, which chango of time of services is well pleasing to the younger portions of the community. As "Philip," the peddlar, was trav el sing the woody road between daring- ton and Marienville, the other day, he was stopped by four men who demand ed his money. He was putting down his pack to comply with their demands, when tho timely appearance of a man wo did not learn his name, caused the villains to to decamp. W. .7. Armstrong, who has been at Meadville' for some time past h now at homo and looking well. Wo understood that diphtheria was bad, at Clear Creek, about two miles above Clarington, and also further up along the Clarion. A sail affair happened nenr the mouth of Maple Creek, some threo or four wcek3 ago. Some boys, among whom was Jacob, son of J. C. Davis, ofBarnett Twp., went down to the brackett dam known as tho Reynolds Dam, to bathe. While swimming Jacob swam out into the middle of the "hole" below the dam, and attempted to "bottom" it. The water was beyond his depth, and he went uuder. On coming up, instead of swimming to shore he swam toward the "tumble" of the dam, and, getting under tho "fall" the water put him under, and he was drowned. His death is not only a loss to his family, but to his community, for there was that iu him that would have made him a maa of worth to any commuuity. Haying, hoeing, bugging, &c, fcc, and all other minor iucidents of farm life, peculiar to the season, engross the minds of nearly all. Little is being done in the way of timbering in tho vicinity of Clarington this summer. Whig Hill remains as of yore. All the people are busy at harvesting, &c. J. J. Fishw, of Oil City was here during the . early part of the week, looking after his interests in thij sec tion. DuriDg our peregrinations of the othar day, feeling an interest iu the cause of education, we made inquiries after all the schools and teachers of our route of travel, and were pleaser' to hear that all were progressing "very well." Nothing More. Tylersburg Topics. Tylerhisurg, July 29, 1878. Ed. REruRLicAN : The Rag Baby Party wa3 represented here last Satur day by a procession 141 strong, the largest part of which came from Scotch Hill, with a large bauner representing a bale of greenbacks, of w hich every man will receive all he wants, when they get in power, by just sending in his order. It is run on the plan of a country tailor shop "make to order and warrant to fit." It made your humble servant feel some like Rachel of old, who mourned and lamented the loss of her departed. Mr. Carpenter, formerly of Tiotiesta, has set up a photograph gallery in our place, aud i.s meeting with good suc cess, I believe. Oood luck to tho old veteran. We will be glad to welcome as many Tionestiaus as well como up to our Grove Meeting next Saturday and Sunday,. The meeting will be held in the grove at tho M. E. Church, near Tylersburg. Bristol and Hadley, managers of the lato ex cursion to Niagara, have in their minds an excursion to Fair Toint, some time next month. Should their idea take shape, they can probably count on a goodly number from this place. The Niagara excursion was a success in every particular, and those who "took it in" are loud in their praises of the management thereof, more especially that of Mr. Orion Sig gins, who had the management of this end of the line. Had it not been for hi efforts, r.nd the large crowd gotten out from this place and Hickory, the excursion would have proven a finan cial fuilure. If another excursion is gotten up, by all means have Mr. Sig gins work up this end of the line. Chas. Hill brought the nev3 to town on Monday, that the well on his larm had struck oil, and was pumping at the rate of seven barrels per day. The oil is the light, green oil, and was struck at 320 foet, having 41 feet of good sand. The well is not a large one, but is important from the fact that it opens up soma neiv territory, and the expense of diilling a 320 foot hole is but a trifle compared with the cost of the deep holes in the lower oil country. Oil is too low to cause much excitement now, over our new strike, but it is very probable that the land in that section will all be leased forth with, and we are looking for some larger wells in that neighborhood here after. Mr. Hill's farm is situated on the east side of the river, . four miles north of this place. Woodcock have been moderately plentiful this season, and more of these birds have been noticed on high ground than ever before at this time of year. This, we suppose, is owing to our fre quent and copious raius, which keeps the ground moist, enabling the wood cock to procure their regular diet angle-worms, on higher grounds than is generally practicable in July and August. Pheasants, or ruffed grouse, are going to be a good crop this sea son, and will probably be hunted closer than ever before, on accouut of the lit tle practice our amateurs have had io whig shooting. Red squirrels are very numerous and very destructive ; black and gray squirrels are hardly as plen tiful as was anticipated a month ago, but still are moderately numerous. The stave business eeems to have been overdone somewhat, from the lact that there has recently been a ma terial decline in the price. At the present prices paid for staves there is not much money iuHho business, and the price of bolts, of course, will de- ciuie wim me-stave market, llns is a matter of regret, for this, has been one -1 t - .1.1. t rr. . business in which there was a little cash the one thing needful for all who handled the bolts or staves. We are not informed how much of a de cline there has been in bolts, but pai- ties interested cau ascertain by calling at the store of Denckson & Co. The Overseers of tho Poor havo made a levy of 5 mills poor tax, to meet the extraordinary expenses grow ing out of the small-pox cases which havo had to bo taken care of by the authorities. It is but right that this tax should be paid cheerfully, as the expense has been incurred in caring for the welfare and health of tho com munity at largo. The tax looks large, but the expenses havu been large, and not one of our tax-payers would wish to run any risk of taking the droid disease for fifty ti rues the sum their in dividual taxes will amount to. Miss Joephciie Slater, of this phiee, who was recautly taken to For est county to bo placed under the med ical treatment of Dr. Harris, an In dian physician, for consumption, has, we are glad to state, partially recov ered her wonted health. Her cast was couaideiv.d a hopekvj one. CUrlon JaeJaoitliiii. The subject of the above notice has since died, her apparent improvement lasting but a short time. The deceased is highly spokeu cf by the Clarion pa pers. The eelipso on Monday afternoon was a brilliant failure, so far as this section was concerned, the uuu beinir hidden by clouds all day, and rain falling most of the afiernooii. Those w ho sm (iked ghiKSis for the occasion can lay them uway until tho meteoric shower, which is supposed to occur iu September.
