graced our Btrccts-a short time since,
while on a lecturing tour through the
West. Eli Perkins, tho humorous lec

15th inst., which was a treat to all who
heard him. So you see, Mr. Editor,
that we of the Norlh-West are not
shut out from hearing some of the lit

I notice by the Hepublican that fish
ing is quite an item of interest in For
est Co. Now let mo tell you somo fish
stories of this locality: One of ray
friends, a few days since, caught, with a
gill net, a channel cat-fish, which
weighed 104 pouids ; he also cauglit
a pickerel, whichlweiched 39 lbs. A
German, a few evenings since, speared
4 catfish, one weighed 85, another 68,
another 53, and the smallest 46 lbs.
You will acknowledge that thoso were
large fish, yet they were no larger than
has been canght In the Wisconsin Riv

fishermen to be good. I heard a young
lady teacher say that she canght fif
teen one evening after her school was
out. Mr, Duun. if you will nnv roe a

visit this summer, I will take you to
the best trout streams in this part of
the State, where you can catch those
speckled fellows of full growth.
The health of the people hero is good.
There is a lurger emigration from the
Eastern States to the West this spring
than I have ever before seen ; scarcely
a day passes but trains of wagons can
be seen crossing the prairies for "Be

Grass is good and grazing for stock
is abundant. Our dairymen have, al
ready begun shipping cheese ; one fac
tory alone has sold over six tons of
cheese, this spring.

Oregon Correspondence.
The following is an extract from a
letter received by Dr. Coburn, from
Mr. F. L. Hall, recently a student in
his office :
Eugene City, Oeecox, May 20, 78.
Dear Uncle :
Your most welcome letter
was received on the 18th. I was very
glad to hear from Tionesta.
I arrived here all safe, but can't say
I was entirely sound. My sea voyage
did not agree with roe. I had hardly
left the Golden Gate, unlil I became
very sea-sick, and did not get on deck
but once, and that was to see a school
of whales; there were five of them.
We were four days on the oceau aad
one day and a half on the Columbia
and Williamette Rivers. I enjoyed
the river scenery very much. The
rivers here are full of fish, princi
pally salmon and trout.
I stayed all night in Portland, and
starting early in the morning, reached
here at 2 r. m., April 25th. Just one
year ago I went to Tionesta ; at that
time I did not dream of being 4,000
miles away in one year.
The first man I inquired of for my
employer was Mr. Osborne himselt,
who was expecting me. Ho lives
about six miles from town, out in the
coast range of mountains. My con
veyance was a saddle mule. The road
was rough, and rather worse than up
to Chris. Cropp s.
I am making cheese in an extensive
factory. It is situated on the east side
of Spencer Butte, a large mountain.
The ranche consists of 1700 acres. We
have 100 cows and make six cheese a
day. I work about six hours a da
ana nave plenty ot help. Can study
rest oi me time Money seems to be
plenty aad is all gold or silver. La
bor is very high. Cows are only worth
810 to 812 each, and cheese sells for
16 to 16i cents per pound, at whole
sale. Tbero is money in the business
hero.
We are in sight of 6now tho year
around. There is plenty of game here,
such as bear, deer, antelope, mountain
lions, elk, black and gray wolves, rab
bits, grouse, voodcock, etc., etc. Iu
tho winter, or rainy 6eason tho coun
try is said to be alive with wild geese,
dueks and other water-fowl.
I think this beats all other places I
lave ever seen. I like it extremely
well, so far, better than any of the
Western States I .have been in. Of
course there aro some drawbacks ; one
U that it ia tmita drv for about fix
mouths, and then rainy for nearly tho
same length of time ; this is the reason
people are said to be webfoted who
livo here long, so that they (an swim
more, readily.
Our nearest neighbors me one mile
away. We pack our cheese to maiktt
on a mulo; they put moro load on a
mule than somo of our Pennsylvania
men haul in a lumber wagon. We
have plenty of building timber, prin
cipally fir. I am very well contented
so far.
Hoping that my friends in Tionesta
are well and happy, and that I may
hear from you often,
I remain Yours Truly,
F. K Hall.
A GOOD WOMAN'S TESTIMONY.
Under date of February 22d, 1878, Miss
Sara T. Smith writes from Linwood, Del
aware county, Ta., to Col. Dunbar, of Wau
kesha, Wis. Tho letter is beforo us. It
bears tho uninistakablo ovidences of cul
ture and refinement, liesides being per
vaded with the writer's religious feelings
and full belief that a Divine hand led her
to try Bethosda wator for her ntilictlon,
"Bright's disease." Wo mako some ex
tracts. After detailing her intenso suffer
ings, Miss Smith tells of tho arrival' of tho
first gallon of Rethesda water :
"It came, and I followed the directions,
stopping all other medicine. Iu loss than
four hours the pain was gone. I slept well
that night; and the next day left m room
for the, first time for four weeks,"
Tho supply of water (1 gallon) then gave
out, and it was fivo days before the suffer
er received a 10 gallon keg. Meanwhile,
"tho pain had returned and all the old mis
ery. On ednesday night (February 13),
I suffered so that I was given S of a grain
of morphia (the most I ever took at ono
time) without effect. On Thursday I com
menced drinking tho water at 8 A. M., and
before noon was perfectly free from pain.
and had no return of it."
Tho writer, in conclusion, says : "Thero
is something peculiarly happy In the
thought of being thus benefitted directly
by the hand of God."
