On the first page of to-day's pa per we present a lecture delivered be fore the last Teachers' Institute, by M. W. Tate, Esq. It will repay a peru sal. Gen. II. L. Brown, of Erie, whim our 831 boys will remember, has been appoiuted Collector of the Port at Erie, in place of J. R. Willard, whose time had expired. Mrs. Col. Thomas and Mrs. Ir win arrived at home from West Ches ter on Wednesday last, after paying the laet sad tribute of love to a do ceased husband and father. The electors of, Clarion County voted on the question ' of whether or not they would erect a poor house in that county. It is vet too soon to know the result of the vote. " ' From the Brookville papers we learn that diphtheria prevails to an alarming extent in Jefferson County. It is a terrible scourge, as this com munity knows by bitter experience. Ice enough has formed in the last few nights to enable the youth of our place to indulge their passion for skating, and the little chaps improve all their leisure moments at the pleas ant pastime. Hon. J. B. Agnew is at home on a visit, the legislature having ad journed from Saturday until to-day He has our'thanks for various favors iu shape of publio documents, pam phlets, papers, Ac. . Mr. Longwell, of the Oil City Derrick has been arrested by Mr. J. R. Waite, of Meadville, for alleged libel. We wouldn't give a hundred barrel well for the amount of damages that will m awarded the plaintiff. , Rev. W. P. Bignell, Presiding Elder of this district, conducted the services of the quarterly meeting held at the M. E. Church in this place on Saturday and Sunday last. ' Rev. Dig nell is one of the most logical and ef fective speakers in the Erie Confer eoce. ' Vatentine day, as far as this place was concerned, was almost a tota failure. There were no enmic valen tines on sale in town, and those who wished to send sentimental ones were scarce, consequently the sale of stamps did not materially increase the assets of the P. O. D. Burglars broke into J. C. Long's hardware store, at Tidioute, one even iog last week, and the News states tha they got away with about fifteen dol lars in- money, but that it was not known that any goods were disturbed The burglars entered the store through a window in the rear end of the buil ding. The glass ball trap has arrived and numerous spectators have enjoyed seeing the boys miss the balls. In theory it looks easy to shoot these balls "on the wing," but in practice it looks differently. None of the shootists have made scores that will bear publishing Alter they "get the bang of it" a little better we may publish some of the scores. THE ELECTION. The borough election passed off tuoothly and quietly. A fair vote was out. Dingman of this place received, on Saturday evening last, the sad news of the death of one of his brothers, which occurred in England, recently, but the message contained no particulars. The deceased was about 45 years of age, and wai a great trav eler, having spent more than half his days in strange lands, lie was some fourteen years in South America, and published in pamphlet form a short account of his life there, which we had the pleasure of reading a year or two 8go. While sojourning there ho was robbed by some natives of a large sum of money, and being a British subject a native of Canada, he put his claim in the hands of Lord Derby, for col lection. The years dragged by, how ever, and the money was not collected. He told Mr. Dingman of this place, who met him in New York last fall, that if he had been a citizen of the United States he would have had his money long ago. We believe his trip to England was in regard to this busi ness. We tender our our respectful sympathy to his bereaved friends. Although we still have some cold nights, it really looks as if the back of winter were broken. And notwith standing the old adage in regard to "a green Christmas and a fat graveyard," we believe this has been one of the healthiest winters on record in this part of the country. P. S. We wrote the above little item yesterday, and woke up this mor ning to find the ground covered with six to eight inches of snow. And such isiifo. -Everybody, or nearly everybody knows Bonn Pitman, by reputation. Benn is the man who made phonogra phy, or short-hand writing a success. Well, Benn's wife died, a short time since, and, at ber own request was cremated in the fiery furnace at Wash ington, Pa. It is not probable that the prejent century will witness the general adoption of this method of dis posing of the ded. - We are sorry to learn ' that Geo W. Dean's house, at Ensworth's Mills, was burned, with all its contents, on Monday of last week. The fire caught on the roof, and ws not discovered until it was too late to save anything. We sympathize heartily with Mr. Dean and his family in their misfor tune, and trust that they may be able to make good their loss in a short time. Court convenes next week. The present outlook is for a busy session. We look for quite a crowd in town during the week, and would just say that our office hours are from 7:30 A. M. to b P. m., and our omce is over Robinson & Bonner's store, next door to Post Office. We are informed that Miss Polly Hood, of Tionesta, was married on Monday last, to a Fryburg gentleman whose name escapes our recollectiou. The young couple have our good wishes. Jamieson School. The following named pupils have not been late in the rooming more than twice, except the first throe, who have never been late or absent during any part of the day : Maggie Mack, Katie Mack, Willie Mack, Mary Hughes, Katie Jamieson, Mary Mack, Susie Johnson, Emma Johnson, Maggie Sul livan, Emma Dawson, Etta Dawson and James Mack. A. Benoit, Teacher. CpU Knox has leased and moved into the Lawrence House, and Mr. Lawrence has moved into the Cap tain's residence. Withouf loubt the Lawrence House will be t in good shape, and Cap. has our best wishes. Bills have been printed at this office for a vendue at the residence of John Zenta, in Tionesta Twp., about two miles down the river from Tiones ta station, on Thursday, March 7th. He has farm products, farming uten sils, live stock and household goods to dispose of. J. D. W. Reck has sold out his grocery business in Oil City to the roan of whom he bought it. He has been in business there for about five months, and, we judge, has done well We suppose he will turn his attention either to lumber or oil, within the boundaries of Forest. Air. boutuard, at Koss Kun, is still agitating the rock in one of Elder Roberts' old wells. Nothing tangible has as yet rewarded his labors, but there's no telling what a week may bring forth. It is altogether probable that there will be more developments near that point during the coming spring. Capt. Knox desires us to state that a grand party will be given at the Lawrenco House on Friday even ing next, 22d inst., Washington's Birthday. McCray's popular string band will furnish the music, and of the supper it is unnecessary to speak. A general invitation is extended to all who wish to participate. We understand that Messrs. J. T. Dale and Jno. Jamieson havepurchas ed a couple of producing wells with machinery and everything complete near St. Petersburg. The wells, if our informant is correct, are producing ten barrels. We hope our young friends may make thoir everlasting fortunes out of their venture. Prof. Monday has brought on an elegant upright piano, of German man ufacture, which is said to be one of the most perfect instruments ever brought to town. He Imported it di rect from Germany.
