EDITOR. WEflSESDAT MORNIXG, FEB. !J, IS78. A TRIIIUTI2 OF MI23IOHY. .Death of Col. P. D. Thomas. BRIEF SKETCH OF ni3 LIFK. From tbo "Forost Press," 9th Inst. Ou the morning of February 7th, nbout eight o'clock, Col. TliiUp D Thomas passed away. Fhilip Dunn Thomas was born near Meadville, iu the county of Crawford, in August, 1807. When two years old, or thereabouts, his parents moved to Chester Co., Fa., where he spent his boyhood and resided in the historic Chester .Valley, the home of the , Waynes and the scones of the earlv struggles of our fathers for freedom lie' settled at Paoli, building a dwel ling1 there, and remained there for sev eral years. In 1846 he was elected by the peo ple of Chester a Representative in the 56th Legislature of Pa., which office he filled with great satisfaction to the people. . For several years subsequent ho was engaged in railroading, and was in strumental iu having new roads pro jected and built in the eastern part of the btato. After this ho removed to Philadelphia, and took charge as Col lector at Faiimount, which position he held for many years, and filled with credit to himself and profit to the Schuylkill Navigation Co., who owned the works. For a period of his lifo he was en gaged in a large Raw' mill at Old Ches ter, as it is called, on the Delaware, in company with William Frick. The lumber manufactured was for the Duiiding of vessels and ships. We mention these circumstances, as we know the interest which all the good "en vi. sorest nave in ine lire ot one thew loved so well. While in compa ny with Jbrick near the mouth of the Delaware he invented a monitor of which he built a small model, design ing to patent it, but the fruits of his labor were stolen by "some crafty per son and the same patented by auother individual, and Mr. Thomas was de pnved of his invention. He often la mented this, as ho often said ho after wards, during the war,, saw monitors built after his Chester model. The oil excitement of Northwestern i onnsylvauia brought our excellent and never to be forgotten friend here rm - - XnO Snrinn of iHfU fmirwl Mm 1, A O - niui 111 U agent and manager of a largo oil Co., called "The Mercantile Oil Co." at East Hickory. The men who consti tuted this Co. were among the first men of Philadelphia. They had lands on Oil Creek and in the vicinity of L,asl Hickory, and pur dear departed friend was their general agent, having the oversight and management ot all their property, but put the most of his energies to developing at East Hick ory, as ho seemed to like the country, where he put down wells both for the Mercantile and National Oil Compa nies, which he represented. Here ho formed acquaintances with the people that ripened into firm friendship. In 1865 he married Mis3 Helen S. May, of Tionesta, when he settled here. ' Vom the first ho seemed to take a leep interest, not only in his own neighborhood, but in the wholo coun y. lioad commissioners, path mas j s aud others ulways got his free and tillable advice, as tho road3 in many Uions are a eland ing memorial to is day. 'Since which time it will over be recorded the good he has one, or all the improvements which 3 has made, either by himself or '.rough his counsel and advice to oth- rs. Time will never tell his valuable gestions, or tho benefit he has been to others. Ho was just tho man to reorganize a county, asbbt in its arrangements, iuj set the machinery of public afiairs order. He had a brain sufficiently .mprehensive in what was especially fted to do good, and his appointment Ciunty Commissioner in 1867 soon ! to the erection of beautiful public .:!Jiir.;s which now adorn the public ,;uudi. Time fails to follow this -.inch of the theme further, as all He continued arming, ulso making "provementd iu one way and another "til 187G, when he was elected State iitur tf h district. Ou none more !;y could tho office have been con He filled it with credit to i;nn liiiii: c If and in the best interests of his constituency. But little more of his personal histo i iu wo wiito within tlio narrow limits of thw weak tribute to his mem ory. Upon bis return he commenced building a house, and finishel the first brick dwelling houso that has been erected in the'eounty, a local monu ment to his memory, This is saying something. The economist snyi that "he who makes a blade of grass to grow where not one grew before is a philan thropist." Reader, has our friend done this? irour responsive-heat t fur nishes its own answer. Disease seemed to fasten on his strong frame with an unreleuting grip about tho middle of last summer. Yet .'midst his severe trials he was the same. Constant pleasantry was min gled with the genuiue elTusion of good nature and good humor, tempered with delicacy and modesty without a tinc ture of ill will. Ou the 17th of Oct. last he was car ried ou his bed to the railroad station. followed by a train of sympathizing mends. Ah, we well remember it, Ilia adieus to the people who gathered around his couch, and with tears in their eyes bade him good bye, is one of the most affecting scenes wo have ever witnessed. But his happy face shone with sunshine on his sympathiz ing friends. Socrates parting with" his frieuds could not have formed a more eloquent scene. The cars came and he was taken off in a trice, and we never eaw our friend again. Ho has passed away ; but his happy memory and his good example re main. ' Resolutions of Respect.
