Rev. ill. Payne, of Bainbridge,
N. Y., lectured on the subject of tem
perance, in the Presbyterian church
Mi Thursday evening last. The weath-1
er was very inclement, and tho an
nouncement of the lecturd very short,
and, a3 a natural consequence the au
dience was small. After Rev. Payne
concluded, Rev. O. B. Clark was call
ed out, and delivered a few remarks
upon the subject. On Sunday lof-t
Rev. Payne conducted tho services in
the M. E. Church, morning and even
ing, and announced that ho would
speak on temperance in town one

day evening last to break into tho de

known, probably with the intention of
lugging of a lot of stuff to save the

that it was impossible to effect an en

Mr. S. J. Wolcotf, formerly of
this place, is now operating about
Tidioutc. He has just finished a well,
which probably won't amount to
much, owing to the difficulty exper
ienced in shutting off the watei. We
understand the casing had to be pull
ed four times. A torped.o will be put
in the ffell. The territory, of which
ho has a large amount is thought to bo jronse
