Our Washington Letter.
Special to tho Republican.
WAf HXVGTOJf, D. C, June 29, 77.
Democratic politicians and their
sympathizers are evidently much ex
hili rated over the ncliou ot the Iowa
. State Conventioa yesterday, and point
significantly to the resolutions adopted
at the Soldiers Reunion, at Providence,
with undisguised gratification, while
enumerating a long list of county con-
. ventions that have taken action sirai-
, Jar to the Iowa Convention in refusiuc
to commit themselves to the Presi
dent's "Southern Policy." The hy
pocricy underlying all their pretended
approval of the President's conciliato
ry course stands out so prominent that
the wayfaring man, unless blind as
wtii as foolish, can see it.
The voice of the public in favor of
. the repeal of the demonetization act
of Feb. 12, 1873, grows more and
more outspoken if tho reports from
the South aud "West aro to bo relied
on. ; Its opponents are discouraged
and demoralized, and should the to
ported defection of Secretary Sherman
which has beeu current hero several
days prove true, their stubborn retreat
. may soon become a. disasterous route.
It is openly asserted that Mr. Sherman
is preparing to follow the lead of the
President over to the side of those in
favor of repeal, and th prediction is
made-that when they again speak they
will bo found in accord with the rec
ommedation of Senator Jones, as he
H understood to express himself in the
Silver Commission's report, not yet
lurtnally made public. Absolute re
peal aud restoration are tho watch
worilrf, and judging from the remark
able change of seutiment within a few
iiiuuihs, it w not hazarding much to
mlict their complete triumph ia the
('ongrens.
nival of ex-Senator Fen ton
I,, l-ini 1i ,.f ll,n ,., ..;,.
ran asserting that he brought with him
a charger upon which to enrry back
the official head of Collector Arthur
and other Csnkling adherents, now
cumbering the various departments of
the New York Custom House; but the
averments of that paper ate usually
dictated by its wishes, and rarely prove
woll founded. Mr. Fen ton himself do
nics that any such sanguinary motives
induced his visit, and thoso knowing
his Amiable and pacific disposition ac
cept his statement as conclusive.
Tho case of Mr. Dowling, tho Tole
do Postmaster, who refused to resign
at the behest of Mi. Reed, Deacon
Smith, and a few others who are urg
ing it against the nearly unanimous
protest of the people accommodated
by that office, remains in statu quo.
It will likely bo very soon determined,
on tho return of the President, who is
said to favor removal, while both Mr.
Key nnd Schnrz oppose it. It may
safely be said that the President could
not do a more unpopular act at this
time, as the whole business has such
an ugly look of bargaining and dick
ering on the part of those ruos ur
gently demanding tho change.
The whole country will doubtless
learn with surprise of the enforced
resignation of Watts, Commissioner of
Agriculture, as he was understood to
be satisfactory to tho President. But
it is now given out that the President
satisfied himself that the administra
tion of the Bureau, which cau be made
such a valuable auxiliary to agricul
tural interests if energetically and
wisely conducted, was in very ineffi
cient hands, and Mr. Watts' res:gna
tion was at once asked lor. Its insig
nificance as compared with somo of
tho other Departments has, in a mea
sure, served to shield it from the sharp
criticisms that tho nepotism and favor
itism known to have existed there
would otherwise have provoked. The
new Commissioner is well spoken of as
a very snergelic gentleman, admira
bly calculated by his acquirements
and executive ability for the position.
