Specinl to tho IlEruni.it'AX. ' New York City, June 15, 1877. The Timmany Society gave a grand scranade and reception to Gov. Rob-r-inson at the Everett House on the 11th inst. Just what the import of this is, no one knows but the Tammany lend era ; yet there U no doubt it is intend ed to have a direct bearing on the is sues between Mayor Ely and Boss Kelly. Mayor Ely will not do the bidding of Kelly in tho matter of op pointrnents, and as Gov. Robinson ha3 in the past, been indebted to Kelly for political favors, last night's grand ac iion may have been gotten up to flat ter Gov. Robinson iuto committing himself to Tammany rule. Gov. Hendricks and wife dined with Gov. Tilden Monday evening. They will sail for Europe in a few days. Tho movements of Hendricks, Tilden and Robinson, and the flutter in Tamma ny hall just at this time, bus lead many to guess that there was some great catioml political earthquake about to burst forth ; but Robinson's reception was only a move on a local political board. The committee appointed by Col lector Arthur to reduce, the force of employees last Saturday, discharged four deputy collectors, aud I am to day informed by an employee in the Custom House, that the discharged of ficers have been reinstated and are now iu their old places again. There is no effort being made to have a spec ial Art Department established in the Custom House, to bo in charge of Borne person competent to judgo of Art. DUNN pcrance ngitator is coming to New York in August, and this meeting is the first of the preliminary meetings which will bo "held previous to his coming. Brooklyn is also agitating the temperance question, which indi cates that tho early fall will witness in these parts a great Tcmpcranco re vival. tfUCIETY OF DECORATIVE ART. This is tho title of an Association lately formed hero for tho purpose of aiding and encouraging women's work in tho field of Art. The plan adopted is to open a Bazar for the sale of ar ticles, and to invite women to send their articles which are to bo subjoct to tho inspection of a competent Com mittee. All goods accepted will bo placed on sale, ten per cent of the pro ceeds going to defray tho expenses of the s&ciety. Tho ofiicers of this socio ty urc among the prominent women of the city, and no doubt this organized effort will stimulate the art laborers uf Women all over the country. JUVENILE LITERATURE. There are constant complaints being made about the demoralizing effects of a certain class of "Boys Story Pa pers." The subtle poison instilled in the minds of boys all over the country by reading these publications 13 a fit subject for agitation. The papers which arc but'the organs of "Rubbers" "Murderers" and "Villains"' ought to bo suppressed ; even if they are pub lished under pretenso of furnishing amusement and eutertaiument for boys. "sandwich" men. On every block along Broadway now, you meet the traveling till boards, sometimes called "Sandwich Men." This method of advertising is too com mou to bo longer effective, for it has ceased to be a novelty. ATHLETIC SfORTS. Who can account for the habit New York papers have got into of adver tising wrestling and boxing matches and other manly (?) sports? Ihe pa pers will gratuitously publish "chal lenging cards" from contestants, and otherwise advertise this kind of low sham business by giving liberal re ports etc. Readers are no more inter ested in these contests than they are in preformances given in the various variety 6liowa in the city. This free advertising of low public performances, is a bad habit, and one which news paper people ought to break them selves of. E. E. B.
