r EDITOR, WEDNESDAY M0RS1XG, MAT 16, 1877. Announcements. TTERM9 : Announcements for the of fice of County Treasurer f 10 each, cash in advance. 2o announcement will be inner ted on any other terms. Wo are requested to announce thenaino of NICHOLAS THOMPSON, of Tionosta township, as a candidate for County Trea Mirer, subject to Republican usaires. Mr. Thompson waa a soldier in the late war, and lost an arm at the battle of diet lyshurg. Our Washington Letter. Bpeoial to the RtPuntiCAW. Washington. D. C.Mav 11. '77. I believe it is Mr. Jobling who says that "there are chords in Lh human breast. &c." And I have been think ing that if Mr. Hayes and Mr. Tildcn happen to have &Dy of these strings utout their physical selves, they wil be given an excellent opportunity to jar, should these two gentlemen accept the invitation of the chamber of com merce of New York City to attend its nnnual banquet. However, it is not likely that the meeting will occnr and the many sharp newspaper articles that have been set up in anticipation are probably doomed to become only so much waste matter. It is sad to think of the little consideration our states men have for the chivalrous knights of the quill. But the saddest and most exaspera ting thing I know of is to wrestle with all the hard names in a European war dispatch of a column or a column and a half, only to find a note.at the bot tom stating that "the foregoing dis patch is probably false." That is 'ard Considerable gossip has been geiug through the papers recently, to the ef fect that Attorney General Devens was to be sent to Constantinople to see that the belligerent Turk took no 'un " fair advantage of the Americans abroad who might be sojourning in Turkey, and Mr. Maynard, our present Minis ter to that country, withdrawn. Now President Hayes says if there is to be any change in his Cabinet, he certain jy nas nt been consulted about it, while Devens says that if the President wants to send him to the land of the Moslems, he knows nothing of it. Senator Gordon is in the city and denounces as a falsehood the story that he has been offered the War port folio. He says he thinks the publica tion stating that he was to have the place, was born of malice and with an intent to injure him. Ex-Presedent Grant is now the guest of Mr. J. W. Paul, in Philadelphia, who is a relative of Mrs. Grant. The General and wife will spend a couple of days there; afterwards they will porceed to the residenco of George W. Child Esq., and will partake of his hospitality until the day of sailing , for Europe, on the 17th inst., at noon, in the American line Steamship "India na." Ex-President Grant on hia ar rival in London, itf s announced, will have a special audience with Queen Victoria, aud be the guest of Mr. Dis raeli and other eminent men. A prominent newspaper correspond ent who has just returned from Ohio, and who endorses the policy of the ad ministration, says he was surprised at tho opposition he found to it in the Buckeye State. He is apprehensive that the result of it will be that Ohio will be lost to the Republicans, princi pally on account of tho dissatisfaction the Southern policy has produced among the Republicans there. I can scarcely believe, however, but that his fears are unfounded. Out in the far west Mormon temper appears, to use a religious phrase, to be getting up on its ear again, and the Latter Day Saints are girding them selves with the carnal sword to resist the United States authority. If Brig ham Young thinks he can defy that nuthority because there has beea no army appropriation and there .is a chance of a reduced army, he will fiud himsolf mistaken. The Mountain Meadows Massacre has not yet been atoned for. Cross and Crescent are bauginj away at each other across the Danube, but no important change has taken place en either side since my last. None will occur until they come to closer quarters. It was old Snarow who said "The bullet is foolish ; the Layonet alono id wise." If this say ing is ever true it is particularly so ' n the bullets are fired from a bat f uutidoofa river lit a bat V. R. DUNN tery on the other side. Asa western paper has it: "Damlongawayoff an pears to bo the Russian objective point." Maxwell- Western Correspondence. Lose Rock, Richland Co., Wis., ) May 9, 1877. Er. Republican: As peace and quiet reigns supreme over our couutry, and nothing' of a bulldozing nature in .successful opera tion to mar the record -of - our good Presidents term of office, wo can now turn our attention to our daily avoca tions without tear that the morrow may bring bloodshed by political con tcstcnts. ...... Ti nies are brightening up some: produce is bringing fair prices at pres eut. Farmers are at present l)usily engaged planting corn, and the acre age of this crop , this eason will be larger than any time heretofore, for corn is the staple crop, and can be cultivated with less cost than any oth er crop; a great many may doubt this but it is a fact that corn can be grow n on our western prairies with less cost than small grain. ' ' The weather ia mild and pleasant but very dry. Trouting at present is lively for thoso who have nothing else to do. One of the state fish commis sioners a few days since,' brought 45,1 000 young trout five weeks old from the Millepring Hatchery and placed them in a small stream tome two miles from here. During the last five years the State has supplied a majority of the small streams of this State with those little speckled fellows, and at three years of age they are large enough to amuse our atneteur. fisher men. ' 1 ; v Our hopgrowers are at present set ting the poles in their ' yards,, as this county is considered the best adapted for this crop of any locality ia the west ; the result is that many . of our farmers have turned their attention is hop culture.' Ono'of my nefghbors has at present sixteen acres ot hops, i .x. The Black Hills appears to be, the point of attraction at present, for we see oc3asionally a train crossing ' the prai rie toward tho setting sun, and I. not iced one wagon-with this sign ; "Black Hills or bust." 1 My opinion, is that there are two chances of "bust," to one to the contrary. '' : " ,. 7 We intend to have a reunion of the old sixth Wisconsin Light Battery at this place on tho 22d f the present month. This old organization re mains as one of the land marks of the ate rebellion. It was with this com pany that your correspondent first learned to know the value of "Hard tack," and from 1861 to 1865 this battery done good eerviee in the West ern Department, joining in all the prin cipal engagement under . Rosecrantz, Grant, Sherman, McPherson, and Fighting Joe Hooker." At present the ground is very dry and the streams are very low. The Wisconsin river is very low and raft- men complain of making "handspike" trips this spring. ' The Mississippi riv er is also very low for this season of the year. , . More anon, N. B. Hood.
