Our Washington Letter.
Special to the Rkpdiuicax.
WAeniwoTos, D. C, March 24, '77.
Dropping into tha pleasant rooms
of tin Fitth Auditor at tbe Treasury
yesterday, I meet and became ac
quainted with the mau whom of all
others was my first choice for the pres
idential notnioatioa at the Cincinnati
conyention E. B. Washburne, our
present ruinistr to France. Had
Illinois but hive suprwrted Wash
burue as she should hare done, he
would hare secured that mraiuatiou
boyond a doubt, and had he been on
the ticket I am confident that it
rould have retired a majority great
er than that given General Grant, iu
'C3. However, it wcut iu another di
rection, and I cannot afford to lose
any flesh over it. Washburne is ap
pearing in much better health and
spirits than when he went to France
eight years ago, and was returned for
the express purpose of insisting upou
a recall. He goes back, next month,
but only to rema-in until his successor
can be appointed.
Things have settled down very
much in Washington as elsewhere
nince the late presidential "unpleas
antness." Especially hcr everything
appears to have subsided into just two
parties, those who waut office and those
who do not; the former are divided in
to those who want to keep in and
those who want to get in. .Of course
a great many of those patriots on both
.sides are doomed to disappointment
Cut notwithstanding this President
Hayes appears to-day outside of all
strict political lines, to be the most
popular man in this country. It is
hardly fair to suppose him to be able
in one month to heal the southern ul
cer that has been festering for years
and has thus far La filed all the politi
cal physicians. And while some may
doubt the practicability of his course
of treatmeut, it is but right that he
should be given a little time to apply
his new remedy, before it is judged.
A most valuable addition is made
to the Republican party in Congress
by the election of Stanley Mathews as
seuator from Ohio. Mr. Mathews is a
man of strict integrity and large pow
ers, and will undoubtedly take a lead
ing place in the next Congress. I
notice that the democratic support of
tbe legislature was given unanimously
to Mr. Blank. What a world of trou
ble it would save the country and
themselves if that party would only
do all their vsting in blank.
The new Secretary of the Treasury
has under consideiation the abolition
of the Internal llerenue Bureau, and
the turning over to the different
states of the collection of the revenuei.
The plan suggested is to assess the
states for a certain amount and let
them collect the revenue in such a
manner as they may deem bst, and
the suggestion is certainly ono that
merits consideration.
I see by my western exchanges that
L. U. Reavis, who next to the Hoosac
tunnel i probably the most celebrated
boi.in the country, is at it again. He
resolves himself that the "National
Capitol be removed to St. Louis."
Now if he ouly said Waukegan, or
Kenosha, or some place that is down
on the maps, but St. Louis J why,
they hnvn't even got enough cnpitol
there to support a first-class base ball
club. What St. Louis needs is some
enterprising philanthropist io remove
L. U. Reavis.
Under tho new dispensation over
three hundred distillers have aban
doned their cricked and crooked
ways in Georgia and the Caroliuas,
.and have confessed and received par
doni. Amongst those things which
this will most effect will be the pro
duction of whiskey and the Democrat
ic majorities iu those states, both of
which, I venture to say, will be large
ly dec-reused".
I notice that Illinois has bocn en
joying the unusual luxury of au earth
quake, and imagiue by that that Sen
ator Davis, has reached home and "bat"
down, referring either to his debility
r his avoirdupois. Judge Davis 'will
f SI a big place in the next Congress.
One of the lust rules of business) of
new President seems to be that no
n need apply, he haviug this
I to appoint. M- c III-
