YESTERDAY'S ELECTIONS.
The Associated Press reports in this
morning's Derrick are so meagre that
they scarcely justify an opinion as to
' which party has carried Indiana.
Ohio is undoubtedly Republican, and
the returns from precincts in Indiana
how Republican gains. The latter
State will be close nud it may take
the official returns to tell which party
has carried it. The news are encoura
ging, however, and we believe that we
have carried both Indiana and Ohio.
If this is the case, Tilden's goose is
cooked, and even a Solid South can.
. not elect him. There is no news from
West Virginia. '
COLORADO.
. The latest news fmm Colorado gives
us that State beyond a doubt, by a
good majority. The Colorado Democ
racy concede the State to the Repub
licans. Our Centennial State has
etarted in nobly.
Proceedings of the Grand Jury, Sept.
Term, 1870.
The following roads returned as nui
sances: 1st. That road in Harmony Tp.,
" leading from Landers' Corners to En
terprise, a distance of about oe-fourth
of a mile.
2d. That portion of the road lead
ing from Lester Warner's (Red clyfle
P. O.) in Barnctt Tp., to intersection
of Maple Creek road with road to
Lackuer's Mill on which an order to
lay out and open was made May 27,
1872; a portion of which has been
opened and the old road closed so
that the traveling public are without a
suitable road.
3d. In Green Tp. That road from
Gee Buck Mill to Kingsley Tp., line,
in bad condition. Recommend work
earlier in season on road, when it
would be of more benefit.
4th. In Tionosta Tp. Road from
Tubbs Run to Hickory Tp., line, in
very bad condition, being a part of an
important road along the River, upon
-which a great deal of work is being
(loo. In opinion of Grand Jury it is
highly accessary that this road should
be improved. This is the second time
this road has been returned. (Road
officers will take notice.) Also return
that portion of the road in Tipeesta
- Tp., from the end of the Tionetta
Bridge toward Little Tionesta Creek
between the cud of the bridge and
I G. W. Dithridge & Qo'$ Dam. It is
represented to the Grand Jurors that
G. W. Dithridge & Co., have obstruct
ed and occupied the road with their
Di'II nriertv and in consideration
W. It. DUNN
therefor, agreed to obtain a review
and build the road at their own ex
pense, at the foot of the hill, which
has not been done, and that the old
road is so obstructed that it cannot be
used.
5th. In Howe Tp. The road from
Brush Camp t Balltown, in very bad
condition. Also about 7 miles of the
road leading from Marienville to
Sheffield, through Howe Tp., impassi
ble and a public nuisance. It is the
road over which the mail is carried,
and the onty road to Sheffield from
Jenks Tp.
. 6th. That the dam of G. W Dith
ridge & Co at the mouth of lionesta
Creek is an obstruction to navigation,
often resulting in damage to rafts and
lumber.
Remarks.
It will be noticed that two of these
roads have been returned once before.
The road in Tionesta Tp., from Tubbs
Run to Hickory Tp., line is a road on
which there is much travel, and which
usually gets icy and bad in winter.
The water turnouts ought all to be
fixed this fall yet, and the mud holes
filled up.
Judge Wetmore well said in his
charge to the Grand Jury "That a
road tax had been collected for about
50 years in this county, and that yet
from the presentments of previous
Grand Juries and other information
We seemed to have no roads. That
there should be good roadt, where a
road system has been in force so long
as in the County of Forest. The tax
has been regularly paid and collected,
the fault must then be in the proper
application of the money arising from
the taxes of laige bodies of unseated
lands, and labor from the seated. That
there is no apology for bad roads in
this County, therefore." ,
The above report should have been
published last week, but owing to tho
illness of tho District Attorney, it was
not handed in until too late for inser
tion in last week's issue. Ed.
Our Washington Letter.
Special to the RErrBUCAjc.
Washington, D. C.t Oct. 9, 76
Democrats are at their old game
again ; blustering and blowing about
the large majorities they will obtain
next November in nearly all of the
Stales outside of New England. This
is an old dodge, and if they could ever
forget anything they ought to forget
this, as it has proved so unprofitable;
but they neitherlearn nor forget. If
boasting would elect a candidate, Sey
mour would have been President ; and
they tried the same style of election
eering with Greeley, with the same
result. Now Tildeu boasts that be
will carry New Yerk by 75,000 and
the hungry pack of office-seekers hang
ing to Lia coat-tails claim two thirds
of the other States. It has been a
comfort to Democrats for the last six
teen years to count their chickens be
fore they are hatched, and it would be
cruel to deprive them of this innocent
pleasure; but If Mr. Tilden has not
improved his knowledge of arithmetic
since computing his income, his major
ity will dwindle down to xoro.
The Democratic reformers are ma
kiog every effort to colonize Indiana
with repeaters and ballot-box Bluff
ers from all parts of the country. Bal
timore has furnished her quota of the
very best material in that line. Tho
monumental city became so noted,
some years back, for the abundance of
its rowdy element, that basinets men
finding the trade about to be deserted
had to organize themselves into com
mittees for the purpose of putting
down this class.
Washington, too, with very small
supply of this element, claimed repre
sentation in the bogus convention at
Indianapolis, so enough money was
procured to send off a baker's dozen,
and they were escorted to the depot by
Democratic clubs and a brass band.
Charles Francis Adams was expect
ed to go out with the boys, but he
sent a letter instead, stating that such
work would bo better in the hands of
young and more active men. His
heart was in the cause, however, and he
wag a true reformer.
Gen. E. C. Carrington of the three
months District Vol's., who has been
stumping Ohio for the Democrats,
will join the boys in Indianapolis.
This veteran serve! some four or five
weeks long enough to impose on
honest old Abe and get a commission
as District Attorney for this District,
which he held until removed by Pres
ident Grant; and now he too, wants
reform.
Ia the hotel lobbies in this fit the
Indiana election is the all absorbing
topio of conversation. Advices re
ceived here based on a careful estima
tion made by the Republican State
Committee of Indiana, indicate that
the Republicans will carry the State
on Tuesday next.
If 8, J. Ttlden is a believer in the
place assigned to the wicked in the
Bible, it is net to be wondered at that
he is a reformer. If the htlf told of
him is true, there ia no man in the
country more in need of reformation
than 8. J.
There is no longer any doubt but
that the Republicans have carried
Colorado by at least two thousand
majority, electing all the tate officers
the Congressmen and a majority of
both branches of the Legislature. This
is the first election of the Maiden State
which has just been admitted into the
Sisterhood of tho Union. The Legis
lature just elected will elect two U. S.
Senators and appoint three Presiden
tial electors. Thus Colorado is sure
for Hayes and Wheeler.
Maxwell.
Every Republican rote must be
got out this fall. No business trans
action, no public or private engage
ment should be allowed to interfere
with voting. This should be consider
ed a sacred obligation to be kept at all
hazards and under all circumstances.
The loss of a single vote may give a
State to Democracy. The loss of a
State may lead to tho surrender of the
Government to those who have plotted
its overthrow. Republicans must
work as if on one vote depended the
salvation of the Republic The luke
warm must be aroused to activity, the
doubters must be convinced by the
presentation of facts, every friend of
the country must be enlisted in the
great work of defense. The signs of
the times indicate a Republican vic
tory, but our friends must remember
that the result depends upon the work
accomplished. If tho work is thorouah
the triumph will be complete.
