Tho following is an extract from a de
scription of Viueluud, published in the
w lorK iriDuiio, by tne well-known
Agriculturist, Solon Robinson:
All tho farmers were of the "well to do"
sort, and some of them, who have turned
their attention to fruits and market gard
ening, have grown ri-jh. The soil is loam,
varying from sandy to clayey, and surface
gently undulating, intersected with Bmall
streams and occasional wet meadows iu
widen deports of peat or muck are stored,
butlicicnt to lertili,0 the whole upland sur
faeo, after it has been exhausted of its
natural fertility.
It is certainly one of tho most extensive
ferlilo tracts, in an almost level position,
and suitable condition ibr ulcHsnnt farm
ing, that wo know of this side of the West
era prairies. Wo found some of tho old
est larnis apparently Just as profitably
productive as when first cleared of forest
fifty or a hundred years ago. 1
Tho geologist would soon discover the
eauso of this contiuuod fertility. The
whole country is a marine deposit, and all
through tho soil we found evidences of
calcareous substances, generally in tho
form of indurated calcareous mail, show
ing many dlxtinct forms of ancient -shells,
of the tertiary formation ; and this marly
sulistauce is scattered alt through the soil,
in a very comminuted form, and in tho
exact condition most easily assimmilated
by such plants tis tho farmer desires to
cultivate. ij, Km
