pants. Beauty blooms, and vice fer
ments. ' Canary birds sing, hens lay
and the hort of man is glad. "Tired
nature's sweet restorer" is indulged in,
in seasoD and out of season. If it were
not for the primary elections wo might
look forward to a kind of a short
millenium until the weather gets
cooler. .. ,
Messrs. Cyrus Hunt and S. S.
Towlcr havo leased n lurgo body of
land adjoining Maiienville, on which
they propose to have a well put down,
for oil, at once; having sub-leased to
other parties who are to commence
operations this week. The well is to
be put down about two miles south of
Marieuvillc, on the belt which has
been surveyed through from Eden
burj; to Bradford. 0;i this tract,
there were, at ono time, t'vo wells
suuk, in one of which the tools are
still fast. We understand tho show
was good when,thcse wells wero aban
doned.'' We will endeavor to keep
our readers posted iu regard to tho
developments in that section.
We publish to day the programme
of Commencement at Beaver Collego,
Beaver, Ta. Dr. R. T. f ayler, for
many years itt) efficient President, has
rendered the school famous for its mu
sical advantages, and as a most desira
ble placo for young ladies. Reeeutly
a Boys' Preparatory Course has been
eatab) idicd, where young boys may bo
prepared for Collego or business. Sev
eral of our ladies havo been students
at Beaver and cherish an ardent love
for their Alma Mutm; Mr. II. II. May
of our towu has beon n member of tho
Board of Trustees for several years.
A sixteen hand piece with four pianos
and g-aud organ accompaniment is to
be a feature of the Concert the 21st.
By the Derrick of Monday we
learn of a terrible accident which oc
curred at Miller's Eddy on Sutnrday
last, whorcby a littlo girl named
Emma Pluukctt, was instantly killed
by the discharge of a gun in the
bands of her grandfather, Duvid For
inger. IIo was shooting rats, nnd
just as his finger touched tho trigger,
tho little girl tan in front of tho gun,
tnd'reccived tho ehargo in her fore-
head. 3'he old gentleman is nearly
crazed -fci consequence of tho unfortu

Mr. Blaine, who at tho present
writing seems to havo tho lead nt
Cincinnati, was taken with a severe
illucsti, . something resembling sun
stroko, on Sunday lust. His friends
were very tincusy about tho result, but
ho is now recovering rapidly. Sunday
was a very warm day-in .Washington,

Ford. Wenk is putting down a
water well on his farm on Dutch Hill.
A good vein was struck at forty-two
feet, but tho well isbeing put down
sixty feet to form a ba3in to hold a
good supply of the water. Tho hole
is five inches iu diameter. The well
is being drilled by John Grubbs, who
has several other contracts of the
same kind on the hill, when this ono
ii completed. .
John Reck, who has for some
time past' been shipping meat from
Oil City and selling it here, lost
about fifty pounds of tho fume, which
was loft on his bands over Sunday
lust. This is unfortunate, but does
not discourage John, who will con
linuo his good work, und keep us well
supplied with beef.
The time of tho morning freight

meeting at Tioiietta depot at 9:10

It is said that Mr. Chas. McCray
bus purchased tho Lawrence House
property, tho consideration being $10,
000. We iiavn not tho authority of
either of tho parties i'or making this
ttateiiicut, but give it as mo hear it.
The School Board of this place
met on Monday evening last, and de
cided to open the public bchools on
the first Monday of September, to re
main open four mouths. A month of
vacation to follow, after which tho
schools aro to be re-opened for thrcs
months. Wc believe there have, as
yet been no applications for the posi
tions of teachers.

Tho town council net on the
banks of Council Run yesterday morn
ing, nnd decided that the foundations
for tho wing walls at the lower end
of tho bridge were insufficient, and
should be made more solid, and in
accordance with the contract. This
we bclievo was done during tho day.
Mr. Dingman has attached a hose,
in some manner to the stave mill boil
er, so that at a moment's notice he
can throw a powerful stream of water
all over the mill, aud even upon the
Lawrenco House. The principle of
th ia attachment is original with Mr.
Dingman, and is a complcta 'success.
Garden truck is being gobbled
up by little black bugs, potato bugs
and chickens, and the voice of mourn
ing is heard in tho land. ' Cabbage
plants are in demand, and tho sun
wilts them, so that the raisers of hot
bed plants do quite a rushing busi
ness. ' j
Coming down tho river on Satur
day, we saw a fish, which was caught
between Tidiouto and Trunkeyville,
which we judge would weigh fifteen
pounds. Ou Saturday evening Ira
Van Giesen caught one which weighed
twenty-two ' pounds. Both of these
fish wero spoon sturgeons.
Thus far, wo believe, thero have
been fewor fires in the- woods of this
county, than any year sinco we have
takeu up our residence here. The
only fires we know of have beon
kindled by sparks from the locomo
tives, which of course, nro unavoida
ble. The boys have already com
menced to celebrate tho Fourth, and
tho snop of torpedoes nnd tho report
of firo crackers groets iho cars ot the
people at nil hours of tho day. Of
course this is somewhat of n nuisance,
and of course it has to bo put up with.
