TH E MEMORY OF THE JUST 18 BUCSSKD.
A Tribute to the Memory of Mrs. Rev, A.
R. Sheriff.
BT REV. A. COPLIN.
Mary A. Sheriff, daughter of J. and
P. Muosell, was born in Troga, Perm.,
August 15, 1840. She inherited a
rare combination of mental and mor
al power, which formed the basis of
ripe intellectual and moral attain
ments, and a strong, symmetrical
character. At the early age of seven
she lost her mother. Fortunately she
was cared for by an aunt and uncle
who in no ordinary degree took the
place of parents, giving her a thorough
practical training and providing ex
cellent scholastic advantages. Though
carefully instructed from childhood,
religiously, she did not until twenty
years of age feel the necessity of a new
birth- a radical ' change' of heart
wrought by the Iloly Ghost. Under
a deep sense of utter sinfulness and
ruin, she then publicly presented her
self as a seeker of salvation at a Meth
odist alter, and there after a renuuoi-
ation of her own will and pride of
heart, she took Christ as her Prophet,
Priest and King, and received a clear
evidence of ber adoption into the fam
ily of God. Her moral convictions,
as well as ber remarkable decision
and Grraness of character were such
that she never in subsequent life wa
vered in ber allegiance to God and
duty. While visiting her sister a
short time ago, she said : "Since first
I gave myself to Christ I have not
failed to bring myself as an offering
to him every day of my life."
While her natural ieelings aud so
cial relations all inclined ber toward
the communion of another church, yet
the yearnings of her renewed heart, no
less than the decision of judgment and
the dictates of duty, led her to choose
the MethodiBt Episcopal Church as
her spiritual borne. While her broad
religious views and generous Christian
sympathies caused her to recognise all
Christians of whatever name as mem
bers of a common household ; she ever
cherishod a peculiar love for the
church of her choice and was always
ready to defend iU doctrines aud
usages. As a Christian worker she
had but few equals. Wherever she
lived her pastor folt the influence of
her brave aympathetlo heart and
strong' arm. In personal effort for
souls, in the Sunday-school, the prayer
and class ineetiug, she waa specially
active. Most of her maiden life -was
devoted to the profession of teaching
in which sho was remarkably suc
cessful, both in training the mtuds of
ber pupils aud stimulating them to
high and holy purposes. Through the
influence of her character and train
ing, many young gentlemen and la
dies have eutered upon a Christian
life and are now fiiliug places of use
fulness and honor.
She came to this coast in company
with her euly sister Mrs. A. Coplin
in September 1886. May 2d, 1869,
she was united in marriage to lie v. A.
K. Sheriff, of the California Confer
ence. As a wife she was deeply efleo
tionate and tender, ever studying her
husband's interests and happiness;
ever aiding him by judicious counsel
and loving sympathy. She was al
ways firm when be might fulter, brave
when bis courage might be weak,
ready to sutler if by so doing she
could shield the heart of him she
loved so well. As a minister's wife
she had peculiar adaptations. From
tho timo of her Conversion the felt a

Though keenly alive to the pe

honored officer of the 8late.- She
counted it all joy to spend and be
spent in her Master's work. She was
the social center of the community in
which they were located; drawing
around ber both the young and the
aged, her home was the place of the
most delightful religious gatherings.
Her gifts of song, consecrated to
Christ, added to the charm of tier
home and the influence of her social
life. As a mother she cherished the
deepest affection for her darling boys,
for whose moral and Intellectual train
ing she was already laying wise
plans. '
At the last conference her husband
was appointed to Downieville where
she immediately took hold of church
work with him with seal, and rejoiced
to see the Sabbath-scbool impreve un
der her wise suggestion. Ia the
midst of great usefulness, just when II
was thought she conld least be spared,
she was stricken down. On Saturday,
at 2 P. M., she was taken with faint
ing and was borne to her bed, from
which she never arose. Doring her
illness she exhibited great faith and
fortitude in severe suffering. As the
hour approached when she knew she
must depart, she broke out in triunv
phant exultation ever death. Turn
ing to her physician (a Christian gen.
tleman) she said ; "Dr., I do not trust
in any thing I have done, bnt afoni in
ths Merit of the Lord Jeu CKriH.
The blond saves." To another she
said, "Put on the whole armor of God ;
do not put it half on." To another,
"Trust only in tlitL precious blood of
Jesus." About an hour before she
breathed her last she requested the
friends to ' sing. With stifled utter
ances they sang, "Home of the Soul."
"Sweet Bye and Bye," and some oth
ers. During an interval she remark
ed, "All last night I heard the sweet
est music. I thought, when I got
well, I would quench my thirst from
the fountain near our door 1 but bow
I shall qnenob it, forever from the
river of life. To die will be gain.
Oh the rest of heaven, hew sweet!"
For two hours she exhorted all
around to meet her in heaven. Often
she referred to the blood thatcleanseth.
Solemnly and tenderly she laid ber
bands on the heads of her children
and committed them to the God of
the motherless. Through tbe marked
kindness and liberality of friends in
