George WaahingtoQ was a conspic-
uous tod beautiful instance of ft man

pose an intelligent person living m
one of the European centres of civ
ilization had been asked, about tbo
year 1770, what man then over thirty
seven years of aga wai most likely to
be the typical great-and good man of
tbe modern world ! Would ' he bavo
singled out the Virginia militia offi
cer, at that time busying himself with
tbe care of his plantation on the Po
tomac, and whatever social duties and
delights, or whatever polite politics
were convenient and appropriate?
The strong point about Washington
was, that the duty or tbe pleasure, tbe
ceremony or tbe self-sacrifice, that lay
in his way, be. enjoyed or performed
without shrinking, hd to tbe very
beet of hi ability. IJe did not, as a
youth, lie ayaka o' bights wondering
"what he would Tie when he f rpw up
to be a man." When, he became a
mau he showed neither imagination
nor genius, bu( ho bad one trait of
genius, namely, concentration. He
put bis mind upon his present occupa
tion, without looking back or look
ing ahead. He engineered, fought
the Indians, rode horseback, wrote
Tetters, went fox hunting, attended
cburch, proposed to youug women,
conducted campaigns, and governed
the United States each at the proper
time, and each with sincerity of pur
pose and assiduity. We do not hear
of bis swearing often; but when he
did, it was thoroughly and effectively
done. If he seems not to have been
as successful in the matter of matri
mouial proposal as in oiber occupa
tions, we must remember that the ccu
lennially revivet) old wivee' tales of
early aud indiscreet refusal of Wash
ington by the said old wives themsel
ves, must be taken with a few grains
of deferential allowance. Tha Old
