    EDITOR.
WEDNESDAY MORNING, JAN. S. 1876.
It is gratifying to know tlint
Cassiiis M. Clay is to come to the front
once more ns a candidate for the Vice
Presidency on the Democratic ticket.
Cnssius has wheedled round on the
office question till he thinks he is ex
actly iu range for a new nomination,
lie was a staunch and even warlike
Republican eo long ns the office lield
cut, but abandoned us as soon as ho
was inarched away from the public
crib, lie now proposes to known how
the Democracy feel on that question,
and if they will not fced him, like
Nebuchadnezzar, he will go out to
grass.
Among the methods of reform,
discussed among the Democracy about
Washington is that of saving a littlo
by dismissing Sherman and Sheridan,
and sucTi other Generals of the array
as can be dispensed with. Tlio pre
ponderance of the Confederate ele
ment in the IJouso is seen and felt in
.nil cti propositions. Of course, it it
distasteful to moderate Democrats to
Eeem to be ungrateful to such men as
Sherman and Sheridan, and they will
try to hold the Confederates in check.
Should such a bill as is talked of be
brought forward, it will open the eyes
of all who thought that the resent
ments of the rebels had entirely died
away.
The idea of ushering in the Cen
tennial year with great eclat, though
brought forward at a late date, took,
and from the great cities East and
West we have accounts of the ringing of
bells, tils' roar of cannon, and grand
illuminations and enthusiasm general-'

tional inspiration as tbo year ad

thusiara. We .doubt if any nation

.received their most rapid development
here. Yet while inventing machinery
ot great practical value, we have sub
billed a continent, and have finally
made it tributary to us. Our progress,

wonderful,- and we will be pardona
