What AuTTliinks.
It is well known that Alex. M'Glure,
' editor of tho Philadelphia - 2Vnes,' an
"independent" paper, ilcsired the suc
cess of the Democracy at the late elco
tioo, yet after ho Hilda his cflbrU iu
vain, he goes on to tell a few of the
. reasons, which, iH his opinion con-ArihuleU-to
the defeat of that party:
"JJut, while Governor Ilartruut's
personal merits did much to save a
debauched political leadership from a
; 'Watciloo defeat, the comedy of blun- j
ders played by his enemies with such
blind, persistent awkwardness va the
'.main element 'bf, the canvass that.
'. saved him. Madness ruled the Dem
ocracy from the day, it entered upou
' the practical work of the contest.
" While its lines woro diffused among
' the people, it wnA invincible for the
' struggle to every dispassionate mind j
but when it was railed, into action,
it came, not as an army prepared to
I light a desperate battle, but as a riot
1 o-.is, discordant aud selfish moss of
1 hungry mendicants, who were intent
only upon dividing the raiment of the
.people upon the mere shadow of a
. Democratic victory. Antony and
Ciesar had parties, but Democracy
had none, and in' bewilderiug confu
sion platforms were considered solely
as clap-trap inventions to delude . the
''people for a day, and nominations
were rushed through in the midst of
midnight orgies which would have,
shamed ' a crowd of average down
town Councilmen. Like the licuten
" ants or Alexander, . when his crown
awaited the succession, the leaders coo
' fused the councils of the party , with
Ilia harsh jars of the conflicts of petty
'ambition, and there were none; to rally
fho great masa of the people wno most
sincerely desired to achieve .a positive
' triumph for reform, . And , from , the
'.Bubcl of tongues - at Erie tbo parly
,-was flung out upon , tha etv of strife
,. without rudder or compass without
organization or leadership, and doom
ed to wither under palpable iuoBoien
cy iu every vital channel.!' , , ,
.. ! :
The Philadelphia, Zetfyer, : which
deals with election - returns in the
most profound and able manner, treat
the occult relations of victor and
- vanished with a tenderness and delica
cy rarely equaled, and never excelleJ,
olTers the following ; words of wisdom
flud sympathy over our triumph : "The
victors of yesterday' will, of course, be
rejoicing to-day. This is the natural
order of evoiits, but the vanished will
Jinve, the consolation of knowing that
.leither the city, nor tha State, uor the
country will be half so badly rui '
,'ns so.mo of their imaginative spo'
rnon during tlio cauvass seemed, to
think." ' This, however, is not the
- brightest gem fro"m the Ledger on tho
-4'esult. r, Its poetia muro was in- splen
vdid liiood, and, after surveying - ton
dorly the corpse of the dead Democ
racy, it broke forth iu the following
beautiful and touching refrain. The
.expression "hor," as, applied to the
Democracy, will bo understood to be
..mere poetic license; , . .,. ; .;
. Affliction soro long tijno slip bore, . ; -'
Physicians word in vain,
'Till t;od at last did hear her moan, i '
And cased her of lior pain. .
'.' Gono to meet Bill Allen. .
. A 'dispath from Ilazleton, Pa.,
of October 2? th, says: James Phil
lips, of Tobnlianna township, on Mon
day went out on the Poeono mountain
hunting deer. His dogs started a
liuek, and drove it in tho direction of
the great nwainp' known as tho Shades
of Death. Phillips followed. After
walking a mile or so he heard the
houuds coming toward him again, and
toon afterward taw something disturb
ing a jcJump. of bushes about fifty
yards away. After watching the
movement of tho bushes for some time
he fired iuto them. The movement of
the bushes ceased. Before he could
go to tho spot the buck came bound
ing along to his left, and disappeared
in the swamp before he could fire, lie
then walked to tho bushes, aud was
horrified to discover the body of a lit
tle boy about nino years old. The
body was riddled with buckshot, and
was lying in a pool of blood. A small
basket, half filled with beech nuts,
etood a short distance from whero tho
child lay. The boy was an orphan
nnd lived with a German family nam
ed Sheibel. -
We desire to be perfectly loyal
to Republican priuciples, aud are.
Yet wo do not see any special occa
sion for grief over the defeat of Ames
in Mississippi. If the Democracy
must shoot and murder, we prefer they
bhould do it under a State-government
run by them, rather than under a
weak Republican, who hasn't tho
nervo to do his duty like a man.
