KDITOU. WEDNESDAY MORXIXG, AUG. li, 1875. REPUBLICAN STATE TICKET. Foi Governor, JOHN K. IIARTRANFT. For State Treasurer, . HENKY W. RAWLK. , REPUBLICAN COUNTY TICKET. For State Senator, W. n. DUNN. (Subject to action of Plstriet Conference.) For Associate Judge, KDWARO KF.RH. For Frothonotary, ltcglster. Recorder and Clerk of Courts, T. J. VAN G IKS EX. For Sheriff, JUSTIS (SHAWKEY, For Commissioners, JOHN RECK, GILBERT JAM1KSOX. . . For Auditors, . ' N.THOMPSON, '- J. R. NEILL. For Jury pDminlssioncr, " II. Z. TOWNER, : : ' . For County Surveyor, ' . T. D. COLLINS. I The Democrats don't want their past record even hinted at.' They say let the past be buried. But there are things happening 4owd South that won't let us forget, but keep ns on the alert, and ought to. With eighty-six Confederate Generals in the next Con gress, and all of theni Democrats, why shouldn't the Republican party hold together a while longer? The St. Mary'i Gazette says: "We have thought that a good plan would be to divide tho thing up a lit tle. Soy, allow Comeron or Forest to have the Senator for one year, then Elk for the next terra, which will be equivalent to three years, and then let Clarion have it for the last four years." We approve of this plan most hearti ly, as far as it relates to Forest coun- y- . Carl Schurz is expected to come hack from Europe in time to stump Ohio for the Republican ticket; it. is said he has promised to do so. Colonel Groevenur, another of the original tfoeen in the Liberal movement, enters the list for the Republican candidates. When such men return to their places in the party, it is a sign of the times that gives tho Democracy immense uneasiness. And their discomfiture is all the more painful as they cannot point to any influential Republicans who are deserting the ranks and going over to tho Democratic camp. ' With record to the prospects in Mercer county, tho Mercer Dispatcr says : , .-' '. '" ' . "Tbe meeting of the county com mittee on Monday was largely attend ed, and the best of feeling prevailed. The members were warm in their ex pressions of faith that the whole Re publican ticket will be elected. The reports made, indicate that outside of two or three districts the third party vole will be very small, and that in a large number of distriuU it will be jiotliuif' at all." The appearance, at this meeting,' of .Mr. Liightner, the Chairman ot. the Vrohibition County Committee, to re nouuee his connection with that con cern and declare his adhesion to the Republican party, was a - happy indi cation of success. Mr. Ligutuer was one of the original temperance men of lbe county, and bas always been zeal ous . ia advocating, the temperance cause, hence his : words and position cannot fail to have weight, lie sees .in the third party movement just wbut every other temperance man will see, un indirect attempt t help the Demo crats, and hence he washes his hands of it. Extremities frequently damage, and even ruin, the cause they espouse. The Greenback Convention, at Detroit, if it shall be what its progamme indi tales, can only do injury, and no good. Tbe attempt to overthrow or limit our .National banking system, so that it shall either not exist at all, or be shorn of power to limit currency, can only result in evil. Let us suppose all that Judge Kelly wishes were formulated into Jaw. Our National nnnks roust nt once call in their circulating notes in order to redeem tlieir bonds deoos ited with the Government, and thus have those bonds available to purchase greenbacks. Can any one fail to see that this will neccptitate the calling in nraiirire proportion of their loans, and thus precipitate bankruptcy.? If greenbacks supplant National bauk notes, it must be done gradually, and not at one fell swoop. We are opposed to the reduction of the volume of V. R. DUNN L'rcciib;irk, ' thus dislike the law providing for redemption in 1879. commit the error if making Natio It I H iNallODM hank notes take tlie place of erecn- backs. Our view it, that greenbacks should furnish elasticity ao greatly needed in the volume of currency; and to this end should bo increased or diminished in quantity, as the demand mar reauire. We prefer increase to the other emergency. Gazette. Facts for Votert. Wo commend the attention of voter to the following? The new Constitu tion forbids all persons Irom voting unless they have been assessed at least two mouths auJ paid their taxes at least one month before tbe date of the election. No one of foreign birth can vote unless, in addition to the above, he has been naturalized a month pre vious to the election. The dato of holding the next elec tion is Tuesdnv. November zd. AVednesdav. Sept., 1st, is the last day on which voters can be assessed. Friday, October 1st, is the last day on which they can pay taxes. Friday, October 1st, is the last day for taking out naturalization papers. Some voung rowdies, whoso names we have not learned, have been en caged the past week, in robbing chick en roosts and stealing roasting ears, and cooking and eating them in the woods. A liberal supply of crooked whisky is used to wash down the solid food. Bovs or men must have lost all sense of shame, or be filled, with, the very meanest whisky, when they steal chickens from a poor widow, or other oor and industrious persons. . Uur borough should have a police, for awhile, and put a stop to so raucn rowdyism on the streets at night, and prevent this petty pilfering. Clarion Democrat. SHERIFF'S SALE.
