j . HOW TtlKV IROP SHOT. A reporter of the Baltimoro Ameri can tbus describes one of the msny processes of making shot in one of the shot towcts of that city : One of the "secrets" of the manufacture ia the mixing of the lead with a certain pro portiou of a combination of mineral substance called "temper. " .The tem per is fused With the lead, a in! give t4Se . molten metal thai consistency which make - it drop, and without which the lead, would be moulded by the solve, and would form little pencil instead of round shot. When "BB" shot, fur instance, are to be made, the lead is poured into a pan perforated with holes corresponding to that size. The little pellets come pouring down in a continuous shower, and fail into a tank filled with water on the ground floor. In Iheir descent of two hundred feet they become perfect spheres, firm and dense, and they are tolerablv cool when they strike the water, although the switl enncussious make the tank foam and bubble as if the water was boiling furiously. The shot must full in the water, for if they would strike any firm substance they would be flat tened and knocked out of shape. To get the little pellets perfectly dry after they have been in the "well," is the most difficult and troublesome process of the whole manufacture. An eleva tor with small buckets (very- much like those used in flour mills) carries the shot up as fast as they reach" the bottom of the well, and deposits them in a box CO feet above the first floor. The water drips from ' tiio- buckets as they go up, and not much is poured into the receiver above, al. ugh it is intended to be a sort of dripping ma chine, From this receiver the shot runs 'down aepout into a dryiug pan, which greatly-, resembles a gigantic shoe-, madet of sheet iron. The pan rests at an angle which permits tbo wot toot to roll slowly down to the chamber below, and the pellets become perfectly dry as they pass over the warm sheet-iron. LET BUSTERS AlrONK. -"'.- ' """""" .. - A New York Medical Jeurnal suys: One of the most generally diffused er ronOus notions is that it is good and beneficial to break a blister, whether it is caused by a burn or the heating of a part of the. body by continued friction under pressure, to which the feet especially are exposed after long walks in illy luting shoes or boots. Such blisters are always fuuud filled with clear liquid, which must be re tained and not drawn olT by. lancing them, and also those blisters often ......j 1 . r .1.. .Li. This water or blood in blisters ia a healing substance, of a kind most appropriate for the parts where the skin is destroyed, fend it the blister is .11 I . . i r . i . " wurr urn uv iineu me new skin forms much more rapidly under it, and much pain is avoided. If the blister contains blood, it must be treat ed in the same way; as blood is the best healing salve. And, by tho way, while using the word 'healing salve,' it may be well to state that there are no bealiug salves or healing plasters All salves and plasters retard healing. and many woundswhich hal uotwith standing tho salves and plasters ab plied, would heal hi half the time if left alono. . It is only in exceptional -cases that a blister myxbe punctured, .namely, when very full of fluid so a to cause much pain by its tgnaioni prick of a one .needle may tycnwn so as to allow the excess of fluid a chance to escape. Instead of breaking a blister and des troying the loose skin over it, it should ie protected so as to gnard agonist any sucn destruction by accident. OI'IUVV IVUIIKDiC.
