The Drinncratie papers aud ofli-

are condemning President Graut aud
Gen. Sheridan for preserving peace in
New Oi leans, and putting down the
White League Tho President is in
uaiiy receipt of letters thrralcniug

of military intcrferar.oo lu Louisiana
will be seen by all, when it is known
that over 4000 Republicans, white and
bUck, have been
murdered in that
folate since the war closed.
And yet
tho Democrats demand that tho mur

distance on this side of Xewmanville

away, as fast as they were able. One
horse runuiug a little faster than the
other, their course was turned to tho

was necessary to shoot it.
The Auditors are now engaged in
making their annual settlement, which
will, doubtless, appear in next week's
issue. Our people will look with in
terest fr this document, aud will scan
it olosel when it comes out. In these
limes or scarcity the people are apt to
look closely into such matters, but we
venture beforehiufd to warrant that
they will find that the county funds
have bceti handled in a manner that
every taxpayer will approve of, a'ud
to the best interest of the county.
Ileal irooJ hunting weather did
not come this wiuter until the time for
killing deer had expired. This was
rather fortunate for the deer, as there
were more hunters in tho Wooda this
wit'ter than ever heforo siuco Coru-
planter used to nave possession of
these "hunting grounds. If there had
been good weather iu the scasou, there
would pot have bcerj enough deer left
in the, woods to furnish a square meal
fur tho lumbermen of our county.
' The turntables.or whirligigs.whicb

ing gates in their place. This settles
the matter, we presume. The room
known as the Arbitration' Room in the
Court House, was set apart as the
place for holding the borough aud
township electious hereafter, so as not
to interfere with the schools. A good
idea.
' Several foxes have been killed in
this neighborhood during this fall and
wiuter. The bounty is now 50 eta.,
and we understand there is to be an
effort made to raise it to $1, so. that it
may become an object to get rid of
them. It is said that Rcyuard is re
sponsible for the scarcity of pheasants
and rabbits, and it is for tho purpose
of allowiug the small game to become
abundant, that he destruction of tho
foxes is desired
uuto Christmas, when we saw
him, Daniel Black had . killed an
brought in fourteen deer. Judge Pro

Gicsen some rive or six, two of which
he killed on Christmas. Will I'olock
has killed three, and several others
have killed one to three. The time
for slaying these animals expired ou
the 1st iust., aud wo don't expect to
receive any more reports of slain doer.
Bears have been more numerous

Coal is coming down siuco the
sleighing has improved, some having
beou offered as low as fourteen cects

banks near town has ft tendency to re
duce . the price of this commodity,
which is ft good thing for the con

Tho sleighing is being takeu ad

of their own, are doing their very
best to wear the snow off, but thus far
have not succeeded. The "mild" win

Tho Elk County jail is now emp-
ly tha first time within the memo-

to the world. This wo cheerfully do,
but wish to add that this state of emp
tiness is chronio with our jail, as it
hardly has teuaut from one year's
end to another.
It looks now as If there might be
some more tuauni;. as tne river is
cloted, leaving great many vacan
cies which from th kiud of weather
we have been enjoying mo likely l

not our ice men forget, however that
it is uoceary to take in ice for sum
mer use, while it is in good condition.
In the eouutiti round aout u,
