A correspondent of New York
journal gives a description of a cheap
plan for an ice house that 1ms boon in
use in his neighborhood for ten Tera,
ud lins never yet failed iu keeping ice
R8 well as the more expensive houses.
It is simply an inclosiire of about six
feet square in the clear, and six foet
Iiigh. The walls are formed of old re
fuse timbers, throw. closely together,
with no regrxrd to form or comeliness.
The roof isTnado of hemlock boards.
The entire cost of this building did
not exceed five dollars, and, practical
ly considered, it is a success; not am
bitious of oontaiuing thirty-five load
of ice, but simply five loads. About
six inches of sawdust was sprend up
on the ground floor, and in packing n
space ot about nine inches was led be
tween the ice and the walls of the
building fur sawdust, and about nine
inches of sawdust spread upon the top
or the ice, ana thn thing wns tixcil
The three main principles observed
here will always insure a supply of
ice, vis: good ventilation, -good drain
age, and plenty of sawdust. Willi
these rules adhered to, a corner of any
old pen-shed will prove quito efficient
in preserving ice.

The Norwich Bulletin relates a euri
oils story of the defrauding of the
Norwich and New York line of boats
by a skillful swindler. While the
Church Congress was in session in
.new xorK, a man wno loosed every
men an episcopal clergyman, called
at the New York office of the Norwich
line and wanted to. make arrange
ruents for the transportation of six
hundred - Episcopal clergymen and
laymen, belonging in New England,
to Boston. There ensued a suitable
amount of discussion and of telegraph
lug to the railroad men in Norwich,
and at length a bargain was struck
for carrying the six hundred at $3 per
man, ine agent to receive U cents per
ticket as his commission, amounting to
$300. He then paid for the tickets
with a check for f 1,800; signed Win.
E. Dodge, and they paid him his com
mission, lime came for the boat to
leave, but not the fcOO. Not one of
the six hune'red were furlhroining.aud
the ideas dawned pith startling rapid
ity in close succession upon the minds
ot tne steamboat omcials. The check
was found to be forgery, but the for-
ger has so far escuped capture.
