Max Adder writes a follows: ''Pit

deal lately from the ravsjres of thieve,
so the oh! gentleman, the other day,
loaded his gun with coarse lalt, and
expressed his determination tit bom
bard the first man who should he ob
served to haunt the timber. On Mon
day morning he had to attend court,
at he did.ujl expert to reach home
until late iu the evening, Mrs. Pitman
felt it her doty to keep an eve on the
woodpile. Unf Pi'man returned about
dusk, and as he walked up tlje yard
he thought he mizht as well carry in
enuugh wood to last all night. He
had just placed the fourth stick unon
bis arm, when an explosion occurred,
and the same instant he tit as . if a
million red hot darning needle were
dancing up and down his Jem. He
had heard from Mrs. Pitman. He
yelled with pain, and, dropping iho
wood, most of it upon his toes, ho fell
to the ground. Just as ho did so. he
saw Mrs. Pitman stand iu the kitchen
doorway with his firearm at 'parade
-rest,' and contemplating her victorr
and her virtira with serenity. Pitman.
first thought was that she had suddea
)y been animated by an insane but ju
dicious desire to realize upon his life

and flew to the scene with expressions
of alarm and grief at the discovery
that she had perforated Pitmuuy She

and then she apologized. Pitman said
it was all very well to apalogize, but
what good was that to a,uiau with two

tie salt, it would do him good. She
urged that salt was better than any
thing else for preserving meat, and
'that his legs would probably be alive
and well ami prancing around the uni
verse when the rest of him was dead
and spoiled. That 'made him mad,
and after splitting up his gun with
the axe, he went to bed, and he hasn't
spoken tn Mrs. Pitman since; but he
has hinted gloomily to the doctor that

We earuestly entreat every young
man after he hr chosen his vocation,
to slick to it. Duu't leave it because
hard blows are to be struck, or disa
greeable work to be performed. Those
who have worked their way up to
wealth and usefulness do not belong to
the shirtless and unstuble class, but
may be reckoned among such as took
off their coats, rolled up their sleeves,
conquered their prejudices against- la

burden of the day. Whether upon

It is related of George Clark, the
celebrated negro minstrel, that, being
examined as a w itness, he was severely
interrogated by the attorney, who
wished to break down his evidence.
"You are iu the negro minstrel busi

"Yes, sir," was the prompt reply.
"Isn't that rather a low calling?" de

but what it is, sir," replied the min
(trel, "but it is so much better than
my father's that I am rather proud of
it." "What was your father's call
ing?" "He was a lawyer," replied
Clark, in a tuue of regret that put the
audience iu a roar. The lawyer let
him alone.
"Got anything for a sick roan to
