Wc ore pained to record the death
of Mr. C. C. Minnclcy, agent of V.
Minnig A Co., of Erie, which occur
red at President, on Monday last. It

the moruing, about 7 o'clock, tho
landlord knocked at his diior; Mr. M
answered, and tho landlord went down
stairs; After waiting for some time
he went up again and knocked, and

put into bed and Dr. Hunter of this
place was sent for; Mr. McCray's folks
in the meantime doing all they could

without avail, and he died as above
stated. Ho leaves a wife and family
who reside at Linesvillo, Crawford
county. All of our business men wcro
well acquainted with tho deceased, and
heard of his death with genuine regret

and have always known him as an up'
right business man, whose word could

The express tram which has here
tofore run on the rifur division' of he
O. C. & A. R. Ky.has been taken off,
and hereafter wo shall have to travel
entirely on accommodation trains, or
in other Jivords, ut the tail end of
freight trains. This is a severe blow-
but we don't know how it is U be bet
tered. It is ct-rtaiu that the express
trains have no been patronized very
extensively, especially since tho hard
times shut dowiV on the countrv.

we visited Seldon Whitmau's coal
vein, on Monday last. We secured
some specimens, which can be seen at
Robinson Bonuer'a Store, but wheth
er or not it is tho real cannol-coal.
neither of us were able to tell. The
vein is not developed to any extent. and
hence no correct estimate can now be
made as to the extent or worth of the
vein. If any ono in this section
posted on the Csnnel-coal question, we
wish they would cull at Robinson's
store, examine the specimens and r

W. H. James Esq., of Franklin,

Eli Berlin, of Whig Hill, lost his
pocket-book containing a goodly roll
of greenbacks, aud several notes, on
Saturday last. He was very much
cast down about it until he stepped
to his wagon to go home, and lo!
there was the bocket book, with con
tents intact. We'll venture to say that
Eli never felt better since he received
the Democratic nomination for County
Commissioner.
The political machinery of this
county is somewhat deranged. We
have a regular Republican, and a reg
ular Democratic candidate for Assem
bly, and an independent candidate on
both sides. The friends of the regu
lar Republican candidate think the
probabilities are that the plurality of
candidates will have the effect to in
crease rather than dimiuish his major!
May, Park & Co. have put up a
very tasteful desk in their bank, out
side the counter, for the convenience
of the patrons of that institution. The
desk is of black walnut, supported by
large brackets sawed in beautiful
curves, arches, convex, and concave
circles, all of which were executed by
Jas. llulings, who has a taste for such
things and can get them up in good
Chestnuts in small quanties are
now in market, aud retail at fiveceuts
a glass or twenty ceuts a quart. There
is a good crop this year, but the chest
nuts are infested with worms to tho
extent of about one in five. We have
heard of no accidents resulting from
the chestnut crop this season.
Wru. Y. Siggius of Stewart's Run
left with us oue day last week, a beet,
of his own raising, which weighed 10
pounds. He also left a couple of doz
en of the largest onions we- have seen
this'year. Mr. Siggins gives his whole
attention to agriculture, aud succcda
well, as he deserves to.
-Geo. Hunter talks of coming out
for Assembly. He offered us the serin
to anuouuee him, last night, but we
didn't thiuk hiiu anxious euough.
