Church rest Sabbath evening. Sunday School at 9:30 a. m. Marshall Jewell took the oalh of office and entered upon the duties of Postmaster General, on Tuesday of last week. CJonrid Sibble had the fore finger of his right hand sawed off at the Newtown mill one day last week. We are without pracliculars. The public debt was reduced $1, 020,700 during the month of August. It is steruated that the reduction will lie still larger fur September. Two young ladies of Corry run a foot race last week for a wager of ten dollars. An exchange Bays "the one with the bluo garters came out ahead." Whit. Davis hus moved into the house formerly occupied by John rjmilh, and Alex. Ilctingo has moved into his new house just vacated by Davis. Mr. Shrader has finished up the jdastering of John Keek's new .house, lie gave every room three coats, and did tho whole job In twenty-seven days. Wm. Blum is laying a substau tial sidewalk in front of his premises, ' which tho name is a grand improve inent which will be, duly appreciated by pedestrians. There will be a dance at the new brick hotel lu Tylcrsburg oa to-mor row evening, Huh inst. Uood music will be in attendance, and a good time isuticipated. Occasionally a pail of "buckle' berries" come to town, and are bought on time at 10 and 11 cents. The black berry season, however, for this year, is among the things that were. Rev. Wm. Elliott, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will move his family to this place in the course of a week or ten days, and will occupy the bouse recently vacated by Wm. liar 3au. Counterfeits of the new fifty and ten cent fractional currency are said to bo in circulation. It is also said that there are actually moro spurious five cent nickels than genuine ones in cir dilution. The new furniture for the school has arrived, and is said to be the best style made. The school house is now the best in the county, and our directors ileservo credit for their action in this matter. There will be an anniversary hop nt the Lawrence House, this evening Good music has bcii engaged, the hall is being reconstructed so as to make it t trout; and at the same time give the dancers all the room. Watermellons and scet potatoes are enjoyed by the inhabitants of eur rounding towns, but we don't see any about here as yet. Perhaps the slrin gency of the mo'iey market rather discourages dealers from bringing on anything except the necessaries life. Laying of the Corner Stone. The Corner Stone of the State Hos pital for tho Insano of tho District composed of the Counties of Craw ford, Clarion, Erie, Elk, Forest, Jef ferson, Mercer, McKean, Venango and Warren, is to be laid by Governor Hartrauft, on the grounds near tho town of Warren, ou the Tenth Day of September, 1$74, at 12 o'clock M. A counterfeit twenty dollar note. of the Mechanic' National Bank of New York was discovered at the Treas ury Department among some National bank currency sent there for redemp tion. This .counterfeit is so well exe cuted that it passed undiscovered through the hands of several counters, but when It reached the Division of Issues ii, was detected by a lady counter, yiie Comptroller of the Cur rency will add this scries to the al ready lengthy list of National bank notes to be culled in for cancellation, the rule being to call fn and abolish by cancellation the whole issue of each denomination of a bank that is successfully counterfeited. The Neillsburg base ball club came over ou Thursday last, to play the Rockets, of this place. The Neills burgs were three times, and the Rock ets twice at the but when the rain forced them to call the game. The Tionesta boys got nearly all the scores which were made, however, and, hod nofc.the rain decended so copiously, thewould probably have permanent ly injured themselves running the bases. Our fellows are going to Neills burg to play the return game some time this woek, we believe. From the Brookville Republican we learn of an attempt at. suicide by ex-Sheriff McPherson, of that county'. He lost u leg at the battle of Getiys burg, and since he. has been out of of fice he lms been financially embar rassed and, discouraged, which brought about a state of mind resulting in him shooting himself twice iu the breast with a revolver. He was living at lust accounts, but no hopes are enter tained of his recovery. Col. Thomas is still burning brick. He has quite a large quantity on hand aud is getting more ready to burn. So many new houses are going up, 'we hopo to see brick taken instead of studding and weather boards, soon. Tho Colonel has taken the initiatory Bteps by getting the brick on the ground for his new dwelling on the lot opposite the Sheriff 's house. He will not commence to build before next summer.'' There has been considerable talk about organieing a military company here. Don't let it end in talk, boys; get up a paper and enlist able bodied young men. There is no good reason why we shouldn't have oue of the best companies in this part of the State, as we have several veteran army officers among us, any of whom would proba bly be pleased to put the company, through tho motions once or wice a week. Mrs. James Green of Hickory was made insane recently by religious excitement caused by a Free Metho dist camp meeting at that place. Sho was taken to Dixmont on tho 1st inst. M. Carpenter is nt home again with all his photographic paraphrana lia and singing books. Notwithstand ing that he was kept very busy in both these lines while at Lickingvillc, he returns home refreshed, and will take good pictures on application and give good satisfaction. He makes apecial- ty of Landscapes. Specimens on hand will show you what he can do. We have received the premium list of the Conneautville Fair, which will take place on Sept. 30th and Oct.' 1st and 2d. Tho fairs at that place have been celebrated for their merit for a number of years, aud no county fair in the State is better managed, or has more interest taken in it by the country surrounding. The Franklin gentlemen who started for Europe iu June last, should have returned last week, but as we do not receive the Franklin papers until after we go to press we cannot tell The Citizen and Spectator of the"Nur sery," each had a series of interesting letters from the tourists descriptive of their travels. y The Supreme Court of this State has just decidedthat the public sale of unclaimed packages by express com panics, which are unopened, is a fraud upon tfie r'ghts of the owner, and that the Company is liable for the value of the troods. Tlrs is a decision of con siderable public importance. Johus, of the Emlcnton Messenger has concluded not to go to the Legis lature next winter, and therefore with draws his name as an independent candidate for that position. This is a clear case of self-denial, as Johns might just as well as not take the position and emoluments. Yokohoma Lodge of Odd Fellows will hold a picnic on the Camp Meet ing grounds at Lickingville, to-morrow, the 10th inst. The Odd Fellows of this place are invited, and most of them will probably attend.. If the weather is good a good time will un doubtedly result. The side-walk on Church St., be tween Blum's blacksmith shop and Fisher's property, is in a very bad .condition, and if not soon mended, may cause some broken bones. We would call tho attention of our coun cil to this matter. A good passenger coach, instead of the customary caboose was attached to the up freight yesterday raorniug. We are glad to seo that the officers of the road seem disposed to look after the comfort of the traveling public. Gen. Harry White will address a Republican Meeting at Clarington on Thursday, the 17th inst. lie will be listened to by a large audience and will be the guest of Judgo Cook while in that neighborhood. Some of our masculine youth went to Pleasuntvillo ou Friday evening last to hear the Berger Family . and Sol. Smith Russell. They returned the same night, well pleased with the trip and the entertainment. Sheriff Van Giesen has been ap pointed a member of the State Central Committee for this county. We con sider the appointment a good one, and have no doubt but tbe Sheriff will acquit himself acceptably. New invoice Boots & Shoes, all kinds, styles and prices, just received at Robiuson & Bonners. 22tf DEDICATION. We are requested to announce that the New Methodist Episcipal Church of Tidioute will be dedicated on Sun day, Sept. 13th. Dr. B. I. Ives, of Auburn N. 5T., will officiate. This is a fine brick church, which has been built at considerable expense to the congregation, aud their neighbors are iuvitod to be present to witness its ded ication to the worship of God. 22-2t J.
