    THX GRKAT DANIIKR FROM MIMWTKRS.
The establishment of iucIi relations
between a pastor and his flock as shall
secure for him that intimacy which
ought to exist only in the domestic
circle is an eviP of fearful tendency
and unspeakable danger. Ministers
are censurable in a high degree who en
courage their people, men or women,
to come to them with family matters
or secret sores. Borne men are them
selves gossips, and delight to get and
give all they can of social dots, and
the more secret the richer the prize.
They encourage revelations when their
ears should be deaf to eerything ap
proaching to scandal. All judicious
pastors discourage familiarity on the
part of their people especially of the
iemale denomination.
For this way lies the danger. A
eilly woman, pious perhaps, but very
soft and shallow, hears the stirring
words of her eloquent pastor, is roused,
warmed, soothed, exalted she thinks
edified and straightway she believes
bim to be the man sent to do her good.
She goes to bia study to tell him so ;
how much enjoyment she finds iu his
words ; or she writes him a letter and
pours out her little soul full of twad
dle about her gratitude for what her
dear partor has done for her ; how she
"is lilted up" by his instructions ; how
she loves htm as a friend given to be
her guide and comfort ; and so on,
and so on, more and worse, running
into a mawkish sentimentality, a sick
ening man-worship, disgusting to every
sensible person, but very nectar to a
Tain, wordly preacher, who seeks only
to make his hearers "feel good." Such
people never go to their pastor to ask
"what they must do to be saved." It
is to tell them how good they feel ;
how he is "exalting" them, "filling
them with joy, peace and love." We
cannot go into particulars without
offending the tastes of every reader.
.We make our meaning plain. We
wish to be understood as saying that
what worldly preachers and sentimen
tal womee call "communion of soul"
and "kindred spirits," "mutual help"
and "holy sympathy," and words in
the same strain, is not religion it is
not even religious. It is of the earth
earthy. It is a "carnal, conceived in
sin." It is simply the lower nature,
the human passion ot tine creature to
ward another. God is not in it.
The importance of the comma is
shown in this item, which has been go
ing the rounds tor some time : "A
country debating club is now strug
gling with the question, 'which eats
most chickens, ministers or owls?'",
An exchange, : in copying-this, puts
the comma after "most," which, it will
be observed, materially alters the
sense. '
One of the most important acts
parsed by the last Legislature provides
that no stay nf execution shall be al
lowed on any judgment for one hun
dred dollars or less, when the same has
been recovered for wages for. manual
labor. This act was approved by the
Governor on March 14th, and conse
quently is now in force.
Naturally enough they don't like
paper money at Gold Hill, Nevada,
and the newspaper there is savage up
on "the very bad and dirty notes of
the National Banks which have been
in circulation long enough to cover
them with grime and make them un
wholesome to look at and unhealthy
to handle."
The pale, sad-looking young men
whom one occasionally meets in the
street are not consumptive, are not
mourning tho loss of a friend, and are
. not divinity students. They are
breaking in tight boots.
We often hear of people who are
too poor to marry, but a California
couple, who had been engaged for some
time, married because they could not
afford to keep two separate rooms in a
boarding house.
M. AdnlnliA on
the Paris Brouse, has 'Mumped," as
iney say mere, who. z.uuu.uoo francs,
or $500,000 and over. They jump bet
ter with a good weight in hand.
At a recent marriage ceremony at
Jevington, East Sussex, England, the
wedding ring was placed on the third
toe of the bride's left foot because
she had no hands.
A story is going the rounds of a
lady who wears a bustle made of rail-
roau oonus. xne nusoana ot such a
creature ought to be a pacific male.
A Kentucky farmer says that three
bull dogs roaming the yard at night
will do more to keep a man honest
than all the talking in the world.
The Schoolmen of the Evening Star
mussDarpen an old saw: "The younc;
man-who-parts-his-hair-in - the-middle
and bis money are soon parted."
A lady barber has been driven out
of Dubuque by the married ladies of
tbat place, Ihe latter thought she
scraped acquaintance too easily.
It is considered a pretty well-settled
fact that death has no terror for the
muo who marries a woman after thir
ty years courtship of her.
The wo in as who writes the addresses
ef the letters "catticornered" is the
especial tormentor of postofficeclerVa.
The majority atraiunt the new Cod
