then rises, who is really great in his
war.
Peter Cooper failed in makinir hat

lines of business before he founded the

Fatrick Henry failed in everuhinir

the orator of his ace and a nation.
The founder of the New York Her

Stephen A. Douglass made dinner

Abraham Lincoln failed to. make

ana yet lie made himself a grand
character in the nineteenth century.
The lesson for every young man is
this: At long as you have the health
and the power to do, go ahead ! If you
fail at one thing, try another, and a
third a dozen even. Look at the
spider; nineteen times it tried to throw
out its web to the placetf attachment,
and on tbe twentieth succeeded. The
young mac who has the gift of contin

able to breast the angry waters of hu

"No animal," says a writer in Pra

"has ever been so honored, so carefully
tended, and so prized by roan as the
horse. He has been for many ages
the companion and darling ef man.
Yet, is the horse of to-day more exalt

and Virgil T Do we notice him to be
in a course of transition to a higher
state of being accompanied with some
change of form and with a manifest
enlargement of capacity ? We notice
nothing of the kind, "and moreover,
expect nothing of tbe kind. We con
fidently expect him to remain a horse,
lie and his descendents, to the Inst
chapter of this world's history. Neith
er the ant nor the bee is A whit more
sagacious than they were in the days
of Solomon or Virgil. They are - not
in course of transition to a higher plat
form they are absolutely stationary
their organs no way either improved
or multiplied."
A Methodist parson, called at an
out-of-the-way town in California to
preach, was informed, before entering
the pulpit, that he must be careful, as
many of the assembled congregation
were "roughs," and would not hesitate
to disturb hira if his remarks did not
suit. The holy man made no reply,
but haying reached tbe desk he took
from his pockets two revolvers, and
placing one on each side of the Bible,
gave a sharp glance around the house
and said, "Let us pray." A more or

The set cost $4,920.
A bar-keener asked a stranger to
pay for his glass of brandy before he
swallowed it. "W-What' cried the
man, astonished at this unusual de

"it's the boss's orders all strangers

"G-goodness! is it so instantaneous in
it's -fatal effects."

A family of Iowa frogs have been

they have been nest-hiding there for at
