    THE ItROKKM PAXE.
t
At our school there was a boy by
tho name of Robert Rich. One dy
ne was throwing stones when he hit
window and broke a pane of glass. N
person had seen him throw tho atone.
lie might have slunk away and kept
nis act a secret, if he had not been too
noble a nor to do such a meanness.
Mr. Hardwick, who lived in the
house where the window was broken,
was a lawyer, and seemed to be- of a
stern, harsh temper; for he used to
scold the boys if they but crossed the
fields, or even entered his woods. Ro
bert did not like to meet him.
But Robert bad more fear of doing
wrong than ot lacing the anger of tho
iawver. bo he went up to Mr. Hard
wick, and said : "In throwing a stone
just now, 1 broke a pnno of glass in
one of Tour windows."
"Well, then, you must send a glazier
and have it mended, said Mr. Hard
wick in an angry tone.
"That is just what I wished to do,"
said Robert, "and I will do it nt
once."
Struck by this manly reply, Mr.
Hardwick asked Robert if he had any
money to pay the glazier.
"ics," said Robert; "I have half a
crown that I have been saving up."
"What have you been saving it up
for?" nsked Mr. Hardwick.
"I have been saving it up to "buy
my Bister a sunshade, replied Robert.
"Well, sir," said the lawyer, "I look
to you to see that my window is mend
ed.'' Robert bowed, and took his leave.
That same day he sent a glazier, and
had a new pane of glass set in place
of the broken one. He felt that Mr.
Hardwick had claimed of him no
more than was right, and he did not
blame him. But, as Robert sat at his
lesson that evening, the door-bell rung,
and a package was left for him. He
opened it, and what do you think he
found? In the package was a beauti
ful blue sunshade, and wilh it a letter
from Mr. Hardwick, in these words :
"Take this as a proof that I was
pleased by your readiness in doing
right today." s .
Robert ran and gave tho sunshade
to bis sister, and she was deligfrtod
with the gift. His- father, when he
learned what bad Jiappened, said1 to
Robert, "Wo should always do right
for the lovo of right, and not in the
hope of reward."
"I am sure I did not hope for a re
ward," said Robert. "I should still
have been glad that I paid for mend
ing tho window, . even if I had got
nothing in return. For surely I do-
served nothing. I sco that a man
mav seem stem, like Mr. Hardwick,
and yet, be kind at heart." English

DAKBl'RY n.ill.V ON M!.-KU'K.NE8S.
. This sea-sickness is a terrible sensa
tion. With some it amounts to but a
Sualmisbness that soon passes over,
thers struggle in the grasp of the
nausea for tho entire trip, or, rather,
they would be floored if at home here
they are decked, as we have no floors.
No one knows the great depth - and
massive breadth of sea-sickness until
he has experienced it, but any lady
who has for a house pet a careless dog
or cat is occasionally afforded an op
portunity for getting a glimpse of its
leading features.
Goorge Washington was never sea
sick, I have been told by several of his
body BervanU.
There are many heralded preventa
tives for sea-sickness, but the only one
known to work successfully is to keep
ofT the sea.
A passenger on a steamship must
be sea-sick or. despised.
A sea-sick person rarely smiles, but
when he docs, everybody about him
immediately regrets it.-
The terrors of sea sickness may be
modified by keeping a well ordered
stomach on the day of sailing. Bid
ding champagnes farewell and whisky
punches- adieu to friends at home is a
sure forerunner of sea-sickness in its
worst form. There was the case of
young Munson, of Danbury, who went
to Europe last season. Born of puri
tan parents and reared amid the refin
ing and wholesome influences of a
lew England home, he carefully diet
ed himself tho week before sailing.
He ate freely of nat meal and bran
bread, and eschewed greasy food and
btimulatiog drinks. The night before
sailing he went down to New York in
a flush of health and hone, and stoo
ping at Norwalk to a clam bake, filled
up with roast clams and gin, getting
down to the city just in time to take
the boat. For three days he pranced
around on tne euvo of eternitv. kick
ing up his heels, swinging his arms
and turning himself inside out in
roost reprehensible manner. He held
then a position in the Third National
Bank, but on returning home he did
not report for duty for a whole week,
fearing that among other things he
had thrown up Ms berth.
None of the officers of the Abyssi
ia lost a day through sea-sickness.
Ikinbury Ntu.
The ntoJit diabolical pun ever in
vented was perpetrated by a very
harmleas sort of person the other even
ing. When Mr. Sobeileigb read that
a father in the est had chopped his
onlv see in two. be iunoceotlv remark
eJ that he didn't think they ought to
rrf?t a man for simply "parting his
heir in I lie middle.
