. It wi Mover's turn for invention
that caused the disaster. Moycr lo
signed a now kind of a iiaUnt, "infla
ted gossamer bustle" tor ladie. It
was a thin bug of India rubber, which
was to be inflated with gas to give it
the proper distension and sufficient
lightness. When the model was com
pleted Mrs. Moycr determined to try
it. (she went into the yard, and tied
the machine under her dress, while
Moycr turned on the kitchen gas to
till the bag. It worked well enough
for a few moments, when all at once
Mrs.Moyer begun to ascend with fright
ful rapidity. She had barely time to
Hcrcam down to Moycr to nut the
children to bed early nnd to tell Mary
Jane to set bread, and the next instant
she was two miles above the snow line.
It was emharii8sing for Mrs. Moycr
very embarrassing, especially as shs
could not reach around the "bustle to
turn off the gas in order to come down.
So sho floated about up there among
thunder-storms and clouds and crows
and aurora boreal ises for several hours,
enjoying the scenery and studying the j
air currents anil 'Wishing she had
biought her muff and a book tc read.
Then she commenced to descend grad
ually, until sho came within a couple
of hundred feet of the earth. Khe
then screamed some as she floated
along, and severcl enthusiastic students
of natural history tried to bring her
down with shotguns, uuder tho im
pression that she was some new variety
of ostrich or flamingo. But a sudden
gust of wind struck Mrs. Mover and
blew her against ' tho "Presbyterian
church steeple with such force that the
"iufktod gossamer bustle" exploded
violently, impressing the sexton with
the conviction that the sacred editlce
had been struck by lightning. But
when ho came out and saw Mrs. Mover
caught by her pannier on the weather
cock, with her parasol pointing east or
west, as the wind happened to shift, he
comprehended tho situation. It cost
six hundred dollars to build a scaf
folding to get Mrs. Moyer down, and
even then Moyer did not introduce his
bustle into the market He will sell
out his patent rights cheap. Mrs.
Moyer wants him to.'

A colored man applied to a Boston

Many persons besides school boys
nnd college students use the phrase,
"He is a brick," without the least idea
that it is supposcd to be of classic ori
gin. It is said that King Agesilaus,
being asked by an ambassador fromEp
irus why they hid no walls for Sparta,
replied, "Wo have.". Pointing to his
marshalled army, he said. "There are
the walls of Sparta ; every man you
see is a brick."

A man gives the following reason
why the colored race is superior to the
