mka. TT.rrKn'n twit to town.
Mr. Pepper moved his wife and fam
ily orer to Plainfield last Spring. Be
fore that, he had lived in town, and
Mr. Pepper did so mutfh long "to go
to the couttry." For a while, after
they got out there, the novelty of keep
log chickens And a cow so pleased her
that she forgot all aboat Ivcw York.
But, along in the Fall, Mrs. P. con
cluded she'd like to go to the City just
once. In vain Pepper pleaded the dan
gers of getting on and ofl'lhc horse-cars,
getting lost, or run over on Broadway,
missing the train coming home, or get
ting off at the wrong station, or the
children being left at home in care of
the girls, or the duce know what all.
"No sir" said Mrs. Pepper, "I'm uo
cuiid, ana besides,! want some change.
You men go to the City every day,
while wa poor women, week in and
week out, stay at homo and look after
the household. I want to g to New
JTork."
Bo Pepper, perplexed, reluctantly
consented. For greater security, Peter,
the oldest boy, who "raj given to teas
ing his sister, was designated as her
.escort, and the following Thursday as
the eventful day. Whew I Thursday
came. Mr and Mrs, 1 . fully impress
ed with the importance of the occasion,
rose betimes. Peter was arraved in his
Sunday toggery, fully one hour before
the time for departure. For greater
assurance on feppers part, it had
been decided that he should take them
down with him on his regular train.
Whewl what a kissing of the little
girls and babies there was when the
time came for them to go. How Mag
. gie, the nurse, was strictly enjoined
not to let the children climb on the
Chicken coop, or to go outside the gate,
or play with the matches, or do a thou
sand other things that mothers have
: prohibited, Maggies disregarded, 'and
children done for ever so many gen
erations. ,
At last they got started. ' 'Toor lit
tle darling tbirjgs, said Mrs. Pepper,
half repenting her, resolution to go.
Bat then she hadn't been to New
, York for so long.
Mr. P. put his wife and Peter in a
atage on Broadway and anxiously bid
them good bye. lie did not feci quite
: satisfied in his own mind that he
should ever seo either of them alive
again. To be sure, they had agreed
to meet him at the ferry at 4 o'clock ;
but then and poor Pepper went on
conjuring all sorts of impossible acci
dents and praying all day fur four
o'clock to come. Mrs. Pepper mean-
; time was going the rounds Stewart
Lord fc Taylor's Macy's, and ail the
other places the visited in tnrn ; but in
each and every place she saw some-
thine to remind her or the children -.
she and Peter stopped in and had some
lunch, but every time she looked into
the cup of tea she couldn't help won
dering whether Maggie would remem
ber to sweeten thrf baby's milk before
the put it into the bottle. She, too, kept
looking at the clocks, to see how long
it was before four o'clock ; and when,
ladened with packages, she finally did
get down to the ferry again, Peter fol
lowing her, also ladened with bundles,
which half concealed him from the
rude world's gaze, there was Mr. Pep
per awaiting her with "Oh 1 mother I'm
so glad that you've come."
When they got home that night,,
everything was found to have gone on
well enough ; but, for all that, when
iue cnuureu naa an said their pray
ers and been tucked away in bed, and
when Mrs. Pepper had got through
counting up her purchases for the day,
she camo and laid her head on Pepper's
shoulder, and said, "I don't think, dear,
I shall want to go to New York for a
year to come." And Pepper would
lave probably said, "All right,
. ray love;" but goodness wo Uio was
sound asleep.
The Germans of Cincinnati are mak
ing efforts to introduce into the State
of Ohio tha song-birds of their native
land. A few days since 1,300 birds of
uiucivuy mi iciics arrived ironi Germa
ny, and were set free near tho city.
They immediately began building
their nests. Among them are the night
ingale, the skylark, and the blackbird
of Germany. A few birds imported
and set free tho year previous are re
turning after the winter, aDd it is hop
ed that those set free this year will do
likewise. Meanwhile the English spar
rowa imported into New York a few
years since to protect the trees of Cen
tral Park from the ravages of insects
are making their bonevoleut way all
over the country.
A practical toper proposes the fol
lowing compromise to the teroDerance
women : O, women, in our hours of
ease, you know we 11 do- whate'er you
please: we'll promise to renounce the
sin of Bourbon, brandy, rum and gin,
and go so far as. to refrain (except
when tempted) from champagne; but
hav some mercy, do, my dear, and
leave, oh, leave us lager beer !"
A oitizen of Salem, Or., has a habit
of oarrying matches in his coat tail
pocket. The other day he was Iouuk-
ing against ft brick building, but as
his underwear was not fire proof it
suddenly occurred to him to visit a hy
(Irani; which he did with as little de
lay as possible.
