Sit &ottti RtpMltn. XV. R. EDITOR. IEDNESD1T MORIUSG, 1PR1L tl 1874. Xho Ditnoerat in the Senate have begun their obstructive measure by reiWinir, to Totu for the nominee for Judges in the new districts formed un nor the new Lonstttuti m. the Repub licans in the Senate confirmed Orvi the Democratic nominee, as a a act of courteir. Aoiv the Doraocrata refuse to reciprocate. The reason i the al leged unfairness of the Philadelphia apportionment. Id other words, un der a political pretence, they refuse to act on cases which involve merely per bodbi juugnienis. iney reiuoe to per form their sworn duty, in a spirit of mean petty revenge. This fact should not be lost sight 'of. Senator Rutan, in a plain, outspoken manner, cited to tbem their bad with, and gave them an assurance Which, we hone,' will be kept, that they will gain nothing bi their obstructive course. We inuct prefer that the nominations eo uncon firmed than to permit a Democratic minority to dictate the course to be penned by the Republican majority We do not need a better fact to present to the people in the oanras, next Fall, than this. ., We hope no changes will be made in the Philadelphia appor tionment because . of this impudent, obstructive demand. There are fair, proper methods that can be applied to all political issues ; and, had the Dem ocracy asked, with an assignment of reasons, their rights, we know their ap peal would have been fafrly considered. But self-respect forbids concession, as the afl'uir , now , atanda, IKUtburgh Gaxetle. - i ' : . . It is evident that the publishers do not entirely like Senator Rutau's bill in favor of a uniform system of textbooks.' We have before us an aDonymous pamphlet, fiuoly issued, which contaius an elaborate argu ment against the proposed system. It will stop competition among pub lishers, and thus prevent that improve ment in text books, which would oth erwise be made, claims the pamphlet. Other minor objections.) are also brought forward bat they are of lit tle force. The proposition for a uni form system of text books has impress ed the people of the State so favorably that we imagine the failure of Senatir Rutan' bill would be regarded un pleasantly. All the arguments urged against It in the pamphlet referred to are really in iu favor. The fact that so large a field would be open to sup ply, on the part of tho publisher fur Dishing tic text books, will lead to great competition in producing .meri torious text books, and less, compe tition in influencing local boards. Also, the greater tho familiarity of a leacner wtui a givon, work,- toe greater lis efficiency aud power. The uniform eeries should be prpvidei for. n The, following items are taken from the Clearfield Journal: On Friday, April 10th, Mr. James fitirk, while engaged in sawing pickets, on Mr. J. L. MTheson't -mill, on Montgomery creek, had his left thigh bona broken by a slab which . was caught bytbe taw and thrown back wards with suQioieot force to inflict the injury sustained. The fracture was propedy reduced, and the patient is doing as well as could be expected. Mr. S. is a stranger, who came , here but a few days previous to the accident. On Tuesday, April 7th, a 1 Ittle son of Mrs; T. H. Speuce, of Goshen town ship, met with a serious accident, uu der the following circumstances: He was riding on a wagon, when, by some means, he wis thrown ' off the seat, lie fell between the front wheel and wagon" bed, and was whirled around, sustaining a fracture of a leg, and other severe injuries. His , wounds were properly attended to, and a last accounts he was getting along as well as, pould be expected under the cir cumstaneesi Hie boy is about eight years of age.' The Petersburg Ioyre$i suys : Ou Saturday night after the theatre was out, Mr. Isemau, with' a lady travel ing along the road between Peters burg and Foxburg in a buekboard, when be overtook four druuken ras cals, ono of whom attempted to getou behind. Mr.'" I. drove faster and thought liimself out of reach of the 'tang, when tho one who had before made the attempt tried" a second time, but as before was 'unsuccessful. A third attempt was made, wheu the villan again failed," fired a pistol at Mr. Iseman, the ball striking at the horses feet. By fast driving Mr. I. ' kept far enough ia advauce to b out of danger.
