Thit istna eommencet Vol. T tf Tiie Fonrar Rr.rt'BLicas, and with the exception of about eighteen months, we hat been with it since the first number was issued. Each passiug year hat put the paper on a surer foun- ation until now it if a fixture, and will undoubtedly always be a part of Tioncsta, as long at the town stands and papen are publithod anywhere. Our thanks are due to those who have aided us by their encouragement and support, and it It our desire to better merit their patronage with each suc ceeding year. Although we are al ways to be found on the Republican de of the house, we are not of those who condemn all measures that do not original with our party. Uur paper is not filled, week after week with long accounts of Democratic dishonetty and Republican purity, but we are in weekly receipt of democratic exchanges that mak it their business, to ferret out and show up every instance in which a Republican official has proved unfaithful to his trust; the reason TTiii it not practiced mora among republi can journals, it, we pretumo," because there are none of them large enough to contain the name of all th demo oratto defaulters. , At for at honesty, neither party can lay claim to a great er portion than the other. Frauds are constantly practiced, aod one party m represented as strongly at the other, aod we do not propose to sbut our eyes to th fact that bad, men 'of bur party have been, and are constantly "doing thos things that ought not to be done, and leaving undone those things which ought to be done.", But if this it the case, where are the Dem ocracy T pointing out the stright pdths which they refuse to follow, and stand mg always and forever in the way of useful legislation, and when any fraud it it revealed always furnishing thei full 'quota of the twiudlert. No,' it is not that the Republican party it all honest, or that the Democratic party is all dishonest, that this paper always edvocated Republican principles ; It is hecaus of the good work the party has done, and is doing, always leadiug the van of any truly great reform, and always legislating for the poor-man making nit paths as easy as legist tion can ever make it. - Is there any abuse f h Republican party Is al waya Crst to prescribe a remedy, and administer it until the abuso is don away. . Is there any wuy by which th condition of the poor of all races and iongues can be bettered? the Republi can party studies it out and makes it a law, while democrats are devising all manner of plans to clog tho wheels o legislation. Is the credit of the Union assailed? there, always in front, is the Republican party, proclaiming by its actt that the public credit must be sustained at all hazards. When th democracy wanted to "repudiate," th Republican party eaid, "Every dollar of the indebtedness thall be paid at coutractcd." What is the result ? th bonds of the Government, because of Republican legislation, are on a . par with gold, and will be until the gov eminent lakes them up. For these, and for many other reasons which space forbids ut to roeution is this pa per identified with the Republican par ty, anJ will be while that party holds the proud position it now occupies, Having thus briefly defined our po tition, we will promise not to tire our reader reiterating it during the com ing campaign, nor again until it seems to ut necessary. Hoping our readers will welcome the new volumo as they ajaaythava those of past years, we put this paper forth to greet it 8ev eulh Birthday. , . Congress has passed the bill fixing th limit of legal tender circulation at $400,000,000. , It is probable that, the Senate will agree to the bill. This is not as much of an inflation, however, as it looks, as the circulation now is upwaid of $350,000,000. Gold, has Only advanced about one-fourth of a cent on a dollar, aud the bugbear of "depreciated currency," is a played out argument. It is altogether proba ble that Congress will pas the free hauling hill, wheu we shall have as much currency aa will be needed to put tho industries of the natiou ou a good footing; "good times" will agaiu prevail, and the money will be good because aecurcd by bonds deposited with the Treasurei of the fuiujd States. . . The legislature of Massachusetts is balloting for a successor to Chas. Sumner in the United States Senate. At our latest' advices Dawes was ahead having 88 voles ; 128 necessary to choice. ' Brn.
