TTKD7iESD.IT MORNING, M ARCQ 1, 1S7 f.
We clip the following particulars
from the Elk Democrat, of a terrible
accident at Blue Rock, Jefferson coun
ty, on Thursday of last week :
Two men. named Nathan Perry and
Kdward Rvnear were stationed nt the
foot of a slide on the job of W. T.
Lane, for tho purpose of removing the
logs from the mouth of tho slide, to
prevent the logs from jamming. About
four o'clock a log which would scale
frora four to five hundred foot struck
something in its dnsccnt when near
the foot of the tdidq with such force as
to jump it entirely out. In its mad
career it struck the top 'of a stump,
which changed its course and hurled
it broadside in tho direction of the men
with fearful velocity. II. K. Lane.wbo
was some distance up the slideV saw
them both turn and run, but 'without
avail, as tho log struck them iil the
region of tho head, killing them both
instantly. Some idea may be formed of
the velocity which tho log had attained
when it is stated that the stump over
which it jumped ' was , about ' sixteen
feet high, and the men were lying in
tho neighborhood of twenty rods from
the foot of the slide. Mr. Perry was
from Potter county, and kept the
boarding houso at Blue Rocfc for Mr.
Lane.: Mr. Rynear was from Phila
delphia; where his folks 'reside. This
is the fifth man that has been killed at
Blue Rock' within three rears."
'' ' '-There is nothing new to report on
the asylum question. The commission
ers were here two weeks ago,, as our
readers have been informed, to receive
"proposals" for brick, lumber, eand,
etc. They took the half-bushel of pro
aals, put them in their pockets, return
ed to Harrisburg to meditate upon
them, and therefore we have nothing
to report.. The contracts will be let,
and the work started in due time. It
is to be a great work and of course
every step will be taken with caution,
and due consideration. ' We must
await the action of the authorities.
They are men of good reputations, and
whatever is done and whenever, we
must conclude is intended for the best
interests of the proposed institution,
' Warren Ledger, , ,
