. - EDITOR. WEDNESDAY MORMNC, 50V. 1!. 1871. The following truthful portrait of the city of Meadvillc, we take from the Derrick'! correspondence from that place: This ancient burg of beautiful resi dences, narrow streets and careful busi ness men is weathering the financial storm gallantly. There are, perhaps, fewer failures in business houses in this ci'.y than any place of like pro portions in Western Pennsylvania. The character of the place is rather wore conservative than some of the neighboring cities, . and still without being behiud the age to any great de gree. The "conservative," wo take it, means that the business men of Mead ville buy do more goods than they are able to pay for, and that their young men make their money before they spend it, and do not attempt to rival Paris, and cast New York in the shade by their reckless extravagance and un-paid-for gayeties. Thero are other cities we wot of, which, had they fol lowed the lead of their more solid ri val, would not to-day have been re penting in sack cloth and ashes. Oil cannot always bring $5 per barrel, nor greenbacks be had for the picking up. The following items 'aro taken from the Venango Citizen: , . A serious accident occurred at Two Mile Run, on the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad, on Saturday lust. A man named Patrick Barrett, of Oil City, and a railroad employe, was walking on the Jimtown railroad when he heard the noise of an npproiicliiug train. At this point the tracks of the Atlantic and Jimtown roads run side by side, with but a ditch between. Bar rett thought the train, which was hid by a curves, was on the Jimtown road, aud stepped upon the Atlantic track. He neglected to look around, and did not discover his mistake uutil escape was impossible. He was struck by the express going north, and carried sixty feet, when he pushed himself clear of the train. His injuries were severe, one foot being cut off, bis shoulder smashed and several injuries about the head. He was brought to Oil City, and his iujuries attended to. No blame is attached to the company for the accident. On.Tuesday evening between five and six o'clock, as two sons of Dennis O'Brien, a section boss on the J. & F. Railroad, were stowing away their work tools, in some brush, at the head iof the' Gross Flats, three miles above this city, on French creek, they discov ered the dead body of a man appar ently sixty years of age, and from the appearance of the body it had lain where fouud for a number of weeks. The eyes had fallen from their sockets, and the flesh of the face and body was very much decomposed. The man was clothed ia a red and barred flan jiel shirt, lark cloth vest greeuish col ored coat and brown pants. By his side a straw hat. A basket, jug, pint bottle and a bag were ulso found near the body. One dollar and ten cents in money was found in the pockets of Hie deceased. ro murks ot violence were visible upon the body, and it is thought he died suddeuly from heart disease or appoplexy. Others conclude from the presence of the jug and bot tle that he died from the effects of of strong driuk. No papers were found upon the body which revealed the name of the unfortunate man. The section men on the railroad remember having 6een a man answering the da scription of the deceased walluuar on the track toward Waterloo about three weeks since. Coroner Corbett empanneled a iurv and held an inquest, after which the body was taken in charge and buried by the proper authorities. , The following items are taken from the Clearfield Journal of la&t week : Bears seem to be unusually plenty in this county this season. Four have been killed in the neighborhood of Rockton, within the past few weeks. Others are in the same neighborhood, and euorts are being made to capture mem. On last Wednesday night, while at tending church, at Wallaccton, this cbudty, n man pulled off hi coat and threw it down ou the seat, when the whole congregation was startled by the discharge of a revolvei, which he was carrying m Ins coat pocket. The ball came vry near striking a boy who was in tho church. Men should desist from such a dangerous practice, and this one probably will when hecoiiaid era how nearly he became a murderer, t.iiaries Met addeti, a workman ou Robisou'n log job. ou Trout Run, thi county, was killed by a falling tree on Saturday last. McFadden aud six other men were engaged in peeling Io.tj, w'mIp two other were close by W. R. DUNN all succeeded in gcttinjj nut of the rond with the exception of McFndaen, who wns struck by a iimb of the tree in such a way as to break his neck. A man named Dougherty, a boss, at the stone quarry, on the south side of "Hog Hack hill nhout four miles above this place, where the stone are being Ukcu out for tho building of the railroad bridge, on tho Curwctisville extension of the T. it C. railroad, was killed, while engaged in drilling out a blnst, for a rechorge, on Friday even ing Inst, October 31st, and another man very badly injured. It appears that Dougherty was drilling the hole without having first put water in it, to prevent an explosion, and fjr this fiiece of carelessnesj forfeited his own ifc, and nlmost thai of a follow work man. It is end, and none can help feeling the deepest sympathy, yet he alone wns to blame. Other workmen will certainly not be guilty of such negligence, after such terrible resttiu.
